I recently heard about Skate Hive and how they forked the ecency frontend to make their own standalone hive dapp.

This can be a great way for communties to focus more on adoption and helping Hive going mainstream... imagine having 30+ communities doing their own marketing and PR promoting their frontend, at least one of them has to go mainstream right? And if one does, it will ultimately help Hive in terms of userbase and adoption.

On the other hand, could this trump Hive's growth in terms of being "A place for every topic, and every person"?

Only time will tell, I have my doubts about whether this is good or bad for hive. We haven't reached mainstream and we have a very small userbase that is about to get decimated into several frontends.
