Intellectual fortitude and holding principles.

Just a quick thought that might be totally off base.

So, I'm philosophically opposed to the death penalty. Many of my left wing friends agree with me on this and most of my right wing friends disagree. When I debate the death penalty with many of my friends who support it, they often bring up the most abhorrent criminal acts imaginable. "How can you oppose putting a child murderer to death?"

Of course, It's entirely valid to bring up those extreme cases in order to test the ethical implication of a principle and the intellectual fortitude of the person who holds the principle. But, the less ethical debaters with whom I've engaged on this issue have often resorted to accusing me of being, in not so many words "soft on child murder" because I've stood by my opposition to the death penalty regardless of the egregiousness of the act. Of course, It's harder to oppose the death penalty in those cases than it would be with more tepid crimes.

I've observed the same behavior in just about every issue; most notably the free speech issue. The legitimate tactic of pointing out extreme examples often morphs into an illegitimate tactic of accusations of apology for the world's worst ideas simply because my principles dictate that those ideas should be allowed to be expressed.

Long story short (too late, I know); supporting the right of the Nazis to march doesn't make one sympathetic to the Nazis any more than opposing the death penalty for a child murderer makes you an apologist for murder.
