Finding Good Curators for Delegation 📢 DELEGATION CONTEST 🔊

### If you're a stakeholder that leases delegation, you might find that the people you delegate to are not adding any value to the network that gives your token value.

### For instance, the list above of accounts selling upvotes to anybody regardless of the quality of content.  Note there are few views and the comments are almost all bots.  Rewarding this content makes it difficult for good content creators to attain a reward for their more engaging content.  Advertising does not bring people to social media networks.  But good quality or popular content does, and in the past it has been these satisfied content creators who later invest in Steem Power.  If these people leave before they reach that euphoria that entices them to invest, the STEEM network is only left with people trying to make money from their own posts, but with no interest in other peoples.  These people are far less likely to invest in STEEM if they can just continuously purchase upvotes with the money they made from the last upvote.
### 13 out of the 23 people delegating from @freedom are selling their upvotes.  Apart from @utopian-io and @dmania who rewards the content creators for using the platform and makes @freedom a beneficiary of all post rewards, the others appear to be upvoting anti-socially.

### You might argue that people are inherently selfish and there is nothing wrong with upvoting yourself.  I would argue that too much of anything can be bad for you and it is up to the major stakeholders to decide and hold each other accountable for what is too anti-social.  This is the reason we were given the downvote, but punishing those who purchased a service from a major stakeholder gives us a catch-22 where the STEEM network suffers from appearing to be a scam either way.

[In her recent post](https://steemit.com/investment/@whatsup/end-user-retention-does-it-matter-anymore) @whatsup asked if user retention is even important anymore.  I would argue that if it isn't, it's because the quality of content is no longer important since you can just continuously earn STEEM and SBD by leasing delegations and selling upvotes.  She also made the important point that ***"Anything earned easily isn't valuable and will not go up in price."***  The reason this is important is because when we had people buying steem and powering it up it was not easy.  Now that you can sell upvotes and delegation - now that you can buy upvotes and delegation - it is easy.

# This might seem OK to some.
For the large stakeholders selling delegation and upvotes, this is a profitable way to make money.  Even though a stakeholder with 500'000 SP would make $5'000 every time the price of STEEM goes up by 1c, this is locked up in Steem Power which has to be powered down before taking it out.  Selling upvotes and leasing delegation on the other hand allows them to stay powered up while they continue to send what they make to dump on the markets.

### The small stakeholders however are here to increase their stake in the platform.  And instead of buying Steem Power to do so they are buying upvotes or renting delegation.  The price at which they buy gives them just enough SBD to pay for the next upvote and the same value in Steem Power.  If the power of STEEM were to go up, this could eventually become profitable for the small stakeholder.  Unfortunately this system creates very little demand to buy STEEM.  Those people who do buy it to purchase upvotes are more likely to lose more money than they make due to the price of STEEM continuing to crash as the stakeholders selling upvotes and delegations dump their liquid profits on the dieing market.

# Solutions?
Well that really depends on the response from this post.  If the stakeholders want to turn STEEM into a place where stakeholders make money but content creators and curators do not, then I do not wish to be part of this.  Instead of investing their delegations in bots that drive good content creators away from the platform due to only advertising getting rewarded, stakeholders could be investing in good quality curators like we have seen from @ned, @stellabelle and @fulltimegeek and I've explained exactly how you can profit from this in [my last post](https://steemit.com/curation/@beanz/good-curators-vs-bad-curators).

# Finding good curators is hard so let me help you!
I do understand that there is a risk in delegating to people who don't bring any value to the platform.  For this we could set up a referral or recommendation system.  Here is a list of curators that I deem to be people who would be great curators from what I can tell from their charts.  If you are a large stakeholder selling upvotes or delegations, and you want to see the whole network grow rather than just make money until this unsustainable system implodes, then consider some of these minnow curators, who retain users on the platform and make nothing for their efforts to bring value to your token.

Great post, I'm also a bit concerned about this. I do feel upvote bots and delegators has a place in this community, and they do help the community, but I think the owners should always have a team, who quality checks the material, and blacklists people who abuse them. Though it's obviously not the main income, the community is what makes steem different.
I've used minnowbooster since the start, but I always work hard on my posts. Now that I've gotten some more SP, I'm delegating a bit to minnowbooster, but unless I stop upvoting irrelevant one sentence comments for them full of typos, I will stop using them all together.

I personally think the abuse is when you use the bots to promote garbage, other people's work and comments that doesn't bring anything to the platform. As long as you put in the work, I have no problems with them.

Glad to hear it. Like I said, minnowbooster all in all does help the community, and I have seen progress, that's why I'm still delegating, but some moderators would probably be in both their and the community's interest.

These are people within my community with whom I teach to do these things better.  @salmankhoja came to me with spam.  Did I flag it?  No, instead I taught her about networking.  All you do is seek reasons to hate people.  But these people are just looking for ways to make money on steemit and I am trying to make the point that they would make better curators than content creators.

To have good curators is not the problem but ensuring they are not auto voting is where the problem lies, as those producing unique and good content will be left out, it is now food for the thought to have good curators, in my own idea am thinking that whoever you to delegate to. Also select those to monitor who may later get the delegation if the first set of people are not making proper use of such delegation.

This as been an issue for quite sometime now, we all agree that every steem power holder as every right to use it the way he/she thinks is the best. 
But why not try another approach?
Say, trust these little minmows with certain amount of steem power and expect them to bring back your investment in form of curation rewards same time retaining new users to this great platform and helping out quality content creators.

Wow, this is such a great post!  It reminds me that I've beeb slacking on the curation efforts myself, lately.  I've been too focused on trying to promote my own posts to try to raise funds for a trip home.  But I do plan to go back into my 75/25 curation/posting habits soon.  

I love the work that you do, and I'm glad you bring up this problem in the community.  Someone had to say it, and I'm glad it's someone with such *gravitas* on this platform, because your voice is always guaranteed to be heard by the masses of Steemit.  I hope we can come up with a good solution to this!

why would i , i'm stalked, i spend no more than five minutes to ten here every day. my rep just got up back to 27 after being dumped to 15 in the first hour by some dyke whale. Now some tard gives me seven downvotes and its back to 15. It's an elitist crypto capitalist club for the incrowd and if you don't suck dick you get wrecked ... so all i do is nexus. Get followers and re-steem. If it got me anything i might bother but i'm not going on my knees lol. Consider it this way : every re-steem is a good thing

Here's one major thing that the whales do not understand (at least most of them):

When I delegate my SP to high value people who are social cultivators, with the bulk of their energy extending outwards to others, building both valuable projects, and investing in humans, I gain a certain amount of loyalty from these high quality people. Their loyalty extends into all kinds of areas, including but not limited to them being supportive of me. This becomes a mutually beneficial ecosystem, and most end up supporting me and my posts, because I support their livlihood. 
This knowledge came as a side effect, rather a reason i decided to delegate my SP. It became  a residual positive effect.
Anyone with long term growth in mind would realize that my strategy is a superior design, and my ROI is greater, as humans compound humans, which brings the demand for Steem...

The only problem I have with this is that stakeholders like @freedom do not create content.  So this example doesn't give them the incentive.  However there are many other ways they could use an employment system on steem to run profitable businesses.  I know a few people including myself who are experimenting with this to show how it can be done.

Are accounts like @freedom playing the long game at all though? You would hope so.

Imagine 7 million SP divided out to each 'active' non-bot account.  

Say the criteria was:  

-  One blog a week minimum(for the non content creators), showing your Steemreports out-going vote chart
-  You need to cast at least 50 votes a week 
-  only 5 were allowed to be yours (to stay at 5% self voting)
- you can opt out (or fall out on purpose)

If you do this you keep your dele for another week, otherwise it's divided out to the ones playing within the rule.

How many active people willing to do this do you think we have?  10000? 5000? 2000?

7 million split between 2,0000 is 3,500 SP.  This account could do what @stellabelle and @fulltimegeek are doing on a massive scale.  

I can see the the average post reward sky-rocketing, and new users climbing to get on board!

I support this wholeheartedly. I curate and comment so much more than I post, and without the little whale delegation I got, it would mean very little.

One small note: power corrupts. So these delegations need to be small, relatively, to prevent abuse.

It could also be large if the delegator is willing to keep them under check.  People receiving delegation should be told what not to do with it and that they run the risk of losing it if they do.  Most people don't need to be told, but it puts them in an employee mindframe.

Yeah, I occasionally poke my patron, steempty, on Facebook chat to keep him updated on what I do aside from voting a lot for good content. Having mutual real-world friends helps a ton in maintaining reliability. If I fuck up, it's my real world good name on the line.

In oder to mine bitcoin you need hardware right.
In order to mine Steem you need to post content right?

Essentially we are all mining Steem by posting. What sets Steem apart from bitcoin is every one on the steemit ecosystem can earn Steem.

You should do a little more research on this part as well two of these "bot" Owners are also witnesses under 65, which do many many contests for the community, They pay for all the server fees out of pocket. Does that not add value to steem and steemit?

The bot owners are not doing it for profit, since delegation is extremely expensive.

It is the difference between a post that attracts other people (which can only be guestimated based on views, votes and comments) and a post that has only been valued by a bot (based on the post getting only bot comments and almost only bot votes.  It's not that there posts alone are "bad", just that these people didn't need to do anything to get these rewards, and the more going to them, the less going to people who are voted manually, by real people who can make a human decision that is not based on the money they received to vote for the post.

It is and it isn't is very true.  In the short term it is.  They put their own money into the system to gain exposure and this has an immediate benefit to the stake holder selling the vote, and a short term benefit to the guy buying it.  But more often these people are not promoting a post that will make them money (such as what adverts usually do) but rather the buyer is under the illusion that they are getting more money from the upvote than they're spending on it, not realising that the first quarter of their rewards goes to the bot.  So what happens after these people realise they're not making the money they thought they were?  Well I think all stake holders lose value when steem becomes known as a scam.  But you're free to disagree with me.

I do think this is likely, but what that means is the content creators here are wasting their valuable time.  Rather than just watch, I would prefer to create a dialogue so that everybody knows where they stand.  And if content creators find another platform that reward them better, then the stake these people are collecting will very suddenly be worthless.

A manual curator who uses their upvote to encourage good writing makes a good writer.  (same goes for all types of content).  That curator does not have to speak English themselves.  They may want to support their own language.  This is why I included where these people are from, since I noticed many of @freedom's customers are not native speakers themselves and are selling using their own language.

It might be now, if this is how stakeholders choose to use it, but it was a much more undervalued token when it was harder to get it without hard work that attracted investors.  If you consider how valuable YouTube, Facebook etc became, then you'll know what potential steem *could* have if it were used as a ***social* network** rather than just a mining rig.

Please explain this.  Unless you're talking about some indirect cost I haven't considered, delegation costs 1 added week to a power down.  There may be an opportunity cost in terms of curation rewards, but this could be used instead to employ manual curators that would make steem the platform where **the best **content creators** (according to stake weighted consensus) would come to earn cryptocurrency, and bring the world of cryptocurrency to their followers.

I forgot to mention (and forgot who actually said this to me earlier) but another issue is that our ability to downvote posts that were paid for makes this not a free market and adds to the scam factor when people add content, pay for a bot upvote but then lose all money made due to the subjective opinion of a stakeholder seeing it as a "shitpost"
