One of these stories takes place in Fener, in the courtyard of Venerable Patriarchal Church of Saint George. Today, I would like to tell you about this duo that smells of history for Orthodox Christians. Forgive me if I make any mistakes in advance. I will be as careful as I can on a sensitive subject.

# Venerable Patriarchal Church of Saint George:

Founded in 1602, the Venerable Patriarchal Church of Saint George is one of the most important religious institutions of the Orthodox Christian world. Especially our instructor warned us about this issue. This historical building was the centre of the Greek community during the Ottoman Empire and I saw that it is still actively used today.

After we had the chance to visit Mor Gabriel on our trip to the Southeast region, I better understood how different each church is from each other. Especially the views of Christian Assyrians and Orthodox are much different from our general knowledge according to my experience.

# Entering the Patriarchate: 

As soon as I entered the Patriarchate, I felt a sense of calmness. I can easily say that even the air felt different. The courtyard is surrounded by historical buildings and every corner is very well maintained.

Since we were moving fast, I could not view the garden in detail, but I remember that it was a very green area.

I can say that Aya Nikolaos Church, the main church of the Patriarchate, dazzled me. But the most memorable part for me from the outside of the building was the cross of the church.

The inside of the church is decorated with frescoes and icons. I think it is even possible to say that it is completely golden.

# History of the Patriarchate:

The Patriarchate was established as the centre of the Greek community in Istanbul, which was conquered in the 15th century. It also hosted the Patriarch, the religious and administrative leader of the Greek community during the Ottoman Empire.

When we talk about the 15th century in Istanbul, I want you to think about what these buildings and heritage have witnessed. From the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the beginning of the modern Turkish Republic, they have certainly witnessed a lot.

Today, the Patriarchate continues to be an important religious and cultural centre of the Greek community in Turkiye, a witness to history.

# Architectural Features of the Patriarchate:

The Patriarchate has elements of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. Considering the restoration and unfortunately the demolitions, it seemed very normal to me. In the courtyard of the Patriarchate, there are many historical buildings such as Ayios Georgios Church, Patriarchate Library and Museum, but we only visited the cathedral.

Aya Nikolaos Church was built in the 18th century and used to serve as the main church of the Patriarchate.

Unfortunately, we couldn't meet with anyone because it was too late during our visit, but it was enough for me to visit the inside to get an idea. Of course, this is not something that can be done without knowing anything. You need to know something about things.

The church was known as one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture with its frescoes and icons. When we saw it for the first time, we were amazed. We had a long discussion with the valuable people I met during the tour, including a Greek guide, when we set off again.

Every year on December 6th, the church holds a special celebration on the feast of Saint Nicholas. I honestly don't remember why, to tell you the truth. I would be very grateful if you could help me with this.

# Importance of Patriarchal Church:

The Patriarchate is an important building not only from a historical and religious point of view, but also from a cultural point of view, as the church holds the stone on which Jesus is believed to have been scourged in chains in Jerusalem. There are also fragments of related priests of the church.

Bu hikâyelerden biri de Fener'de, Fener Rum Patrikhanesi ve Aya Yorgi Kilisesi'nin avlusunda geçiyor. Bugün sizlere Ortodoks Hıristiyanlar için tarih kokan bu ikiliden bahsetmek istiyorum. Şimdiden bir kusurum olursa affola. Hassas bir konuda elimden geldiğince dikkatli davranacağım.

# Fener Rum Patrikhanesi:

1602 yılında kurulmuş olan Fener Rum Patrikhanesi, Ortodoks Hıristiyan dünyasının en önemli dini kurumlarından biri olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Özellikle de eğitmenimiz bu konuda uyarısını yaptı. Bu tarihi yapı, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde Rum cemaatinin merkeziymiş ve günümüzde de hâlâ aktif olarak kullanılmakta olduğunu gördüm. 

Güneydoğu bölgesi gezimizde Mor Gabriel'e uğrama şansımızdan sonra her kilisenin birbirinden ne kadar farklı olduğunu daha iyi anlamış oldum. Özellikle Hıristiyan Süryanilerin görüşleri ve Ortodoskların görüşleri benim tecrübelerime göre bizim genel bilgilerimizden çok daha farklı.

# Patrikhaneye Giriş:

Patrikhaneye girer girmez, içimde bir sakinlik hissettim. Havasının bile farklı hissettirdiğini çok rahat bir şekilde söyleyebilirim. Avlu, tarihi binalarla çevrili ve her köşesi çok bakımlı.

Hızlı hareket ettiğimizden dolayı bahçeyi detaylı bir şekilde görüntüleyemedim fakat oldukça yeşil bir alan olduğunu hatırlıyorum.

Patrikhanenin ana kilisesi olan Aya Nikolaos Kilisesi, gözlerimi kamaştırdı diyebilirim. Ama kilisenin dışından benim için en akılda kalıcı olan kısmı kilisenin hacı oldu. 

Kilisenin içi ise fresklerle ve ikonlarla süslü. Hatta tamamiyle altın bile demek mümkün bence.

# Patrikhanenin Tarihi:

Patrikhane, 15. yüzyılda fethedilen İstanbul'da, Rum cemaatinin merkezi olarak kuruluyor. Ayrıca Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde Rum cemaatinin dini ve idari lideri olan Patrik'e ev sahipliği yapmış.

İstanbul'un 15. yüzyıldan bahsederken düşünmenizi istiyorum. Bu binalar ve miras nelere şahit olmuştur. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun çöküşünden tutun da, modern Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin kuruluşuna kadar bir çok şahit olmuştur kesinlikle. 

Patrikhane, günümüzde de, tarihe tanık olarak, Türkiye'deki Rum cemaatinin önemli bir dini ve kültürel merkezi olmaya devam ediyor.

# Patrikhanenin Mimari Özellikleri:

Patrikhane, Bizans ve Osmanlı mimarisinin unsurlarını taşıyor. Yapılan restorasyon ve ne yazık ki yıkımları göz önünde bulundurunca çok da normal geldi bana. Patrikhanenin avlusunda, Aya Nikolaos Kilisesi'nin yanı sıra Ayios Georgios Kilisesi, Patrikhanenin Kütüphanesi ve Müzesi gibi birçok tarihi bina var fakat biz sadece katedrali ziyaret ettik.

Aya Nikolaos Kilisesi, 18. yüzyılda inşa edilmiş ve Patrikhanenin ana kilisesi olarak hizmet veriyormuş. 

Ziyaretimiz sırasında saat çok geç olduğu için ne yazık ki kimse ile görüşemedik fakat fikir edinebilmek için iç kısmını ziyaret etmek bana yeterli geldi. Tabii bu hiçbir şey bilmeden yapılabilecek bir şey değil. Bir şeyler hakkında bilginizin olması gerekiyor.

Kilise, Bizans mimarisinin önemli örneklerinden biri olarak ve freskleri ile ikonlarıyla biliniyormuş. İlk gördüğümde hayran kaldık. Tur sırasında tanıştığım değerli insanlar ile ki içlerinde bir Yunanistanlı rehber de vardı, yola tekrar çıktığımızda uzun süre tartıştık.

Fener Rum Patrikhanesi, sadece tarihi ve dini açıdan değil, aynı zamanda kültürel açıdan da önemli bir yapıdır ki bunun yanında kilise İsa'nın Kudüs'te zincirlenerek kırbaçlandığına inanılan taşa ev sahipliği yapıyor. Ayrıca kilisenin ilgili rahiplerinden parçalar da bulunuyor.

Patrikhane, yüzyıllar boyunca Rum cemaatinin geleneklerini ve kültürünü yaşatmış. Buram buram tarih koktuğunu söylersem yanlış olmaz değil mi? Ayrıca patrikhane, günümüzde de Türkiye'deki Rum cemaatinin önemli bir kültürel merkezi olmaya devam ediyor.
