The Great Unfollowing But Who Would You Like to See Back on Hive
<img src="https://images.ecency.com/DQmcjTtfzBW9b2dvedhe1jnfMtLnhhvjNWQQaQ3REzokD34/we_are_all_going_to_heaven_hive_yayyyyyy.png" alt="" />

Me aul'd buddy @holoz0r with the 0 mentioned the other day that he did a cull on who he followed and unfollowed some users who were not active anymore on Hive . I had a look at my own profile and I was following 1700 people . Considering around a group of 5-10 reply to my posts every day I thought it was about time I did my own cull. So I set out with a rule . Anyone who didn't post since 2024 was cut. I started with the β€œa”s naturally and I was surprised at the amount of people who were not active anymore. Now these followers go all the way back to the Steem days so some of them did not get on the Marie Celestial boat even @celestial didn't get on to Hive which was fine. But some names who I thought would be still active were long since gone.

There was some long inactive names that I could not find my way to delete . Some old friends that started me along my way on Steem. The most famous of them was my old pal @janton who the OG's remember as posting about cowboys and the wild west every day and being on top of Ashers Engagement League every week for around 2 years. The bollocks would comment on every post on Steem. I don't know where he got the time but @janton was everyone's favourite , a nice man who always had something nice to say about your post. I think I look back smiling at the old git because when I read his posts I read in his voice. Well, the voice I think he has. And @janton's voice to me was Yosemite Sam. The famous lil cowboy who used to have beef with Bugs Bunny. Remember the Texan oil barron with the guns.

_Ohhhhhhhhhh I can't wait to shoot that rabbit. \[shoots guns in air\]_

Yep him. I do that alot with all my Hive friends. I have a little accent for them. So whenever I read a @janton comment I used to start it with OOOhhhhhhhhh . Anyway I miss him about the place and hope he comes back. I gave him my Netflix password once for the Ballad of Buster Scruggs . And the fecker watched about 100 films which messed with my Netflix algorithm and started showing me all these weird shows I should like.

There were more names too that were strong personalities but had fallen away for whatever reason they fell out of love with the place. These were not fly by nights. They were daily posters. They could be brown bread as well. I am not to know.

The people who have been around a while know the names of the regulars. Even if they have not conversed or made friends yet but I set about trying to make an effort with the β€œoriginals” who have been on the blockchain a while but they are not in my circle. It was quite a nice exercise actually and I will keep trying to build a relationship with them so that every one knows I'm a nice bastard.

Another thing that surprised me was that there were still plenty of the users I follow that are very much active on Hive so this filled me with hope for the future. Many posted within 3 months. You can tell the ones who haven't posted but curate instead because you see them around in comments which is fine.

I spent a good hour whittling down my 1700 to 600. Some non 2025 posters like @janton and another old friend @akiroq , @brittandjosie @beautifulbullies in case they came back. I also didn't touch the likes of appreciator or curie in case it gets me struck off the nice list (if I am still on it). It's funny who upvotes my posts . I could be unfollowing a whale and they could be upvoting my posts with other accounts for the past 2 years.. I very much doubt it but I will find out soon enough. 😳

I also did a bit of thinking about my place on Hive . I never wanted to be the Coffeezilla of Hive making posts about how the Hive Marketing arm is funding projects but nobody else making people aware at the massive outgoing of HBD to some questionable projects so I got the ball rolling in a way. I find the whole thing naΓ―ve and too trusting of some Hive users who have **little** stake in Hive and I find this strange coming from the users with the **most** stake voting to fund Valueplan. I think a user needs to have at least 20,000 Hive powered up before they are even considered for funding. It is just too easy at the minute. If you want 20,000 HBD to do your conference , you need to have skin in the game. Put your money where your mouth is you sponger . If you love Hive that much you would have more than 100 HP in your account. I don't care about hard times you hit. Don't be applying to do conferences then. I try to see the good in people myself but over the years in crypto I have become socially aware around scams and hustles. I find some intelligent people can also be very socially unaware. That's the only thing I can pin it down to if there are not backhanders involved. Maybe another option is the larger stakeholders don't understand poverty so well because they never had it and the fact that you can get your granny knocked off in South America for $100. I'm drifting again.

I do prefer my more comical posts that slag off Hive but in a fun way so I may retire from publicly heckling people in the posts as the outgoings to the users being funded and the ROI speak for themselves. I get more upvotes from the normal bloody posts anyway so what's the point on putting a target on my back? I do wish to go to a Hivefest at some stage as well and I would not like to be beaten up at it by the conference squad, the rally car dude or the wells mob who will most likely all be going to Hivefest. So I am scaling back the Valueplan posts to twice a year seeing that spiritsurge is being paid to update their figures which are correct and there is a website now to be more transparent.

Sometimes it is good to take a break from Hive because you can become stale easy enough and it is good to live life and have proper stories for when you get back. I would love to see the return of some of the people who left . It would be easier to get these guys back posting than onboard new users as most don't have a pot to piss in and retention is terrible. Maybe re-boarding should be an initiative where I apply for funding and I fly to Texas to get @janton back. I am sure quite a few people would vote for that. Kidnap @janton. Wouldn't that be fun?? After @janton I can fly to the Netherlands (first class) and get the Block Brothers and get @brittandjosie back killing 2 birds with one stone. My next stop would be somewhere in Asia to follow the sun. Someone like @eonwarped. To Britain then for @quillfire. For balance I would try and convince @haejin and @berniesanders back for a bit of drama. Might rough them up a bit before we take them back. Also what ever happened to the most popular guy on Steem, @nathanmars? He was like a cool looking Idris Elba. Way cooler than our current uppercrusts. Also @fulltimegeek was fairly sound as far as I could remember and @pensiv used to serenade us with that radio voice on MS waves. The list is endless. Get him back as well.

I am sure many of you would like to have your own friends in your own circles back. Who would you look to have back? Answer in the comments. Considering Hive has funded an entire rally car for the Rally Community and by last count has 6 active users. If I was to get 20 Hive users back for 100,000 HBD I would be 4 times more successful than the rally car with 10 times less funding. πŸ˜‚. So how about it , will I put in a proposal?

I will plan the logistics on how I will carry out this mission based on the comments section. If the user is no longer of this world , I will finally make use of one of those Conference stickers and leave it on their gravestone and take a picture. It's what they would have wanted. I will add them to the Brown Bread London slang Community with their epitaph and will get in contact with the person who upvoted them the most for a little story about them. It can't just end with one day they are posting and next day nothing. That's just sad. Anyway former users that you would like to see back in the comments please.

Some more insider secrets would be nice, but @adept is not coming back.
https://peakd.com/steemdev/@adept/will-steemit-complete-project-xanadu-s-vision-of-what-the-internet-should-be
Probably can't get @skeptic back, either.
I miss ol' @janton, but likely he suffered the same fate as @smithlabs.
Nobody gets out alive.
The ultimate question is how @jesta has managed to maintain his place on the witness list after a 5 year absence.

Yeah and normally it’s because they hit the wrong bloody button . It’s nearly better to be a bit controversial so if you get the dreaded unfollow you can say to yourself , ah that was only the guy who sponged off Hive a lot . Nothing personal and go about your business . I did actually get a couple of unfollows as a result of my cull but that’s not too bad considering

I did my own unfollowing a while back. I would like to see @flauwy back, however for his own sanity and peace of mind he left so perhaps that is selfish of me. I just hope he gets the peace he's looking for. It would be nice to have more people who actually engage on my follow list. Commenting on my musings and random bullshit. I do get how you feel. I unfollowed folks who haven't posted in over a year. And I started following folks who actually post stuff I'll read or look at, but perhaps I should follow more whales and beg for scraps. Hard to say. Who would you follow after the unfollowing is my question for you? As you were one of my follows after my culling the first time

I miss that @blanchy fella. Whatever happened to them? I heard they got stuck up a tree and are perhaps still entrapped there, to this day. Lucky they have a really long extension cable and starlink, or we'd all be royally fucked.

In really super depressing news, @lauralemons actually *died* - sure - this was before the time that HIVE forked away from STEEM, but I often wonder what they would make of the world today. This is a platform that gives so many people the ability to express themselves in ways that get more exposure (which is saying *something*) than other places.

I also, of course wrote about some of the names in my handsomely rewarded [9 years of loss post back in August](https://peakd.com/hive-126152/@holoz0r/nine-years-of-loss-reflections-on-hive-steem), almost a month ago now.

I take it as a personal wake up call to ask myself - who are the hive faithful that I would be crushed if they were to no long regularly be a part of my following feed, or they grew dormant?

For me, that would be a small selection of users. Your cutting wit would certainly be one of those, but I just *hope* there are people out there that feel the same way about me, or that there are users that I somehow haven't discovered yet that i might feel the same way about in the future.

Until then, I wake up hoping that someone I care about hasn't given up on HIVE, their life, or writing.

I do plan on coming to the UK at some point in the future to make a nuisance of myself on the Tube and at Immigration.

The last time I was at customs in the UK, I was asked "anything to declare, cash, prescription drugs, etc?"

I was on something for irritable bowel disease at the time - so I explained the medication and why.

"carry on mate"

So I did. I went into more and more detial.

The customs office insisted. "Carry on mate"

I kept going. I didn't realise he meant, GET THE FUCK ON WITH YOUR WALK, SONNY BOI.

But yeah, any trip to the UK will be a few more years away, will have to hit up @raymondspeaks and a few other of your sun-malnourished types to have a meal, an embrace, and a gentle "Get fucked?! - you're a real person? Not just a disembodied agent of the DHF hunting shadows?"

@namiks ·
I do this every so often. And it's always a surprise to see names I had just forgotten, either from the fact that we would engage a lot in the past or that such a common name that was doing just fine on here one day decided to just disappear. Whatever their reasons for leaving, I hope they're doing well in life.

Most of my followers are from the Steem days, they're gone. Haven't posted in many years and didn't follow to Hive. I think the actually active followers I have are less than 40. The ones I interact with by either curating them, commenting on their posts if I see them? Probably about 20.

All the people from my life I told about Steem and eventually Hive aren't around. Many just didn't care in the end. They'd post once or twice and then that was that. If I asked they just said it wasn't worth it to them. Fine with whatever the day job would make, not so interested in the 'grind'.

> I am sure many of you would like to have your own friends in your own circles back.

I do but I also miss the days where posters on here were more curious. It felt like in the past I would post something and get a decent amount of interaction (comments, not votes) from usernames I had never seen before, now it's almost primarily the ones I do recognise. I try to be that person myself sometimes but I won't even get a reply!

I have tried to ask through Snaps on who people would recommend following, and that sometimes results in 1 or 2 new people, though they either disappear like the rest or I don't really get recommendations at all. I'm also not all that interested in following people that get that constant appreciator support, they tend to have never really curated anyone else or don't really reply to comments, they just post and go. And I like finding smaller people that will engage and appreciate the smaller votes from people they get.

Hive has all the problems you often satirically write about and I never really disagree with them, but I don't care for the drama. Just wish we had that curious sense of community again. Where posting in a new community will have new faces spring up, rather than the circle-jerk communities we've created that keep the same few interacting.

Alot to unpack there @namiks . You are right in all your points. I find myself guilty of going back to the same people all the time myself but I do this out of interest in their life. But there is a correlation between what interests me and knowing that person. But I am trying to branch out from voting on the same people. I do like when Appreciator or one of the curation groups comes to visit which is seldom but when he or she does I am quite chuffed about it. I think the hope for a post to do well is what keeps me engaged and putting out new content. It would be like Christmas Day every day if they were to become constant I would imagine and I would soon be posting about my daily walks. You are right about Steem and Hive. More people you know are upvoting and commenting, I did feel there was a better community over at Steem as well that may have diminshed over the years. Thanks for the comment

Nothing against groups like appreciator and the likes, but yeah I think an outcome of those big curators becoming more the norm is that *for some reason* a large number of who they curate get that curation regardless of when/what they post. And they now know it. They don't need to change any of their habits, so they know they can post and leave, they don't need to comment on other people's posts or curate others because their end is covered. But for regular people where that traditional connection remains, curating and commenting on others is how they themselves may eventually start being curated and commented on by others. I've noticed there's a big correlation in those that get the daily appreciator votes and how little they interact with other people. They're like domesticated dogs in that they know they can just sit by the bowl and it'll end up full of food. But the strays still have to work together.

And naturally, for many that aren't part of the lucky few, they burn out. It's a lot of time to post, especially daily, but even more time to then interact with others by going through communities, reading posts, and then commenting. So it's not necessarily a platform problem, just an aspect of human condition itself. Similar to what you mentioned about how some better off posters on here don't quite understand the poverty aspect. And they never really can or will understand unless it all disappears tomorrow and Hive becomes less a fun little Internet money thing and a fundamental aspect of survival.

I also have my interests but what can be great about Hive is that anyone from any part of the world can use it. There's no algo choosing whatever is related to your language or region. So you can find some really unique posts from people in all aspects of life. That's definitely a strength. I try to remind myself about that and find people that seem to be posting something a bit different to support.

I very much miss @dandays, and @bulldog-joy. @corvidae also seems to have fallen off the Hive. Also haven't seen a post from @brandt in a while.

Definitely way funnier than me, but he never had the balls to do his own stand-up routine. He still stops in once in a while, and can be found in Discord, but I REALLY miss his posts here. The closest thing to him here is me, and I'm a damn poor substitute.

Get her back. She was great fun. She met someone I knew from the Netherlands shopping one day and I got the text off him with a photo.

@valued-customer ·
>"If I was to get 20 Hive users back for 100,000 HBD I would be 4 times more successful than the rally car with 10 times less funding."

This is factually true, and that is damning of them mining Hive's value with their plan.

There are many from the old days I miss keenly, much great discussion was had with many no longer on chain. The one name I will mention here is @stevescoins. Unfortunately I believe he has passed away, afflicted with cancer. I am concerned for others that stopped posting in sketchy circumstances in S. Africa and Nicaragua, but I don't know what their circumstances are so I don't dare name them dead. Dozens, perhaps hundreds, of quality users have left the Hive mines that I think could have made a difference here today if they hadn't thrown up their hands and given up in frustration.

Thanks!
