Is there A Difference Between Telling A Lie And Omitting The Truth?
***Many times I have heard people say..."I never lied to you, I just did not mention it...and that's because you never asked".***

Personally, I feel this words are mere excuse to escape being accused of lying or deceit. When you omit the truth about a particular thing...deliberating causing another person to believe what is not is another form of lying to me. You can't play that card of..."you never asked that's why I didn't tell you", knowing fully well that whatever it is you might be "omitting" might hurt this other person or cause a problem later on.


# ***What is a lie?***

A lie is a statement made which is not true...not the actual fact...with the intention to deceive someone. This isn't any different from omitting a truth...because your intention is a deliberate one, so the result is usually the same. Take this for instance....

*She has been talking to this guy for months now after they met. He is cute and caring, he always made time for her...giving her all the attention she could ever ask for. She started to like him and things looked hopeful and the romance was great. She never asked him anything about if he had a girlfriend because she felt he was giving her time and he liked her a lot and she did too, so nothing could go wrong.*



*She was expecting a next level kind of relationship...like an engagement you know, she was deeply in love with this guy. Only for a lady to come one day and expose the fact that she was his fiancΓ©e. She was shocked, couldn't believe what was going on...so she asked, "How could you do this to me? You lied and deceived me all this time of being with you". But he claimed that he never lied he just didn't tell her, maybe if she had asked he might or might not have lied....only then can it be counted as a lie.*

How would you judge that situation? Maybe, that was a bit touchy and emotional but it was a clear case of lie and deceit. They all go hand in hand...lies, omission of the truth and deceit...any attempt to defend this is an excuse for me. Most times we tend to take pride in the fact that since we didn't lie outrightly then we are good...which is a lie on its own. Well, she should have asked him if he was in a relationship but then if he didn't have the intention to lie or deceive her he would told her about his relationship from the onset...leaving her to choose if she still wanted to go on with it.





Being plain about things without hiding some facts is better off than lying or whatever it is we choose to call it because sooner or later the truth would be out in the open. Deliberating deceiving someone under the pretense of  omitting the truth is also a lie, there is no difference or justification for it.

Well they might be different in definition or methods but they actually do the same thing...you know like what some people call "White lie" and lie in itself.

I think it depends on the situation but, as a general rule, I do not believe there is a difference between telling a lie and omitting the truth. We tell ourselves that there is a difference to justify our own subterfuge and deception, but both lying and willfully omitting the truth are usually designed to mislead. 

That's not to say that sometimes it isn't the right thing to do. "Do these clothes make me look fat?" really only has one correct answer, regardless of the truth of it, for instance.
