the howling winds

November in Japan is a time when children who are three, five, and seven years old are dressed in kimono and brought to shrines to pray for their health and good upbringing. This is a Japanese tradition known as *shichi-go-san*, which means 7-5-3 in English.
 
Japanese shrines are often surrounded by knotty, twisted pine trees and small ornamental Japanese maple trees. As November progresses, the maple trees transition from being a deep, beautiful red to being completely bare. This creates a situation I like to imagine in which the children, in their colorful kimono, compete for attention at shrines.
 
Which will be more colorful?

The children or the maple trees?
 
In the first of this week’s poems, I tried doing something a little more conceptual and experimental with the poem’s form. To reflect the tradition of *shich-go-san*, I wrote about the drama I mentioned above using a syllable count pattern of 7-5-3 to hint at the poem’s subject matter.

That’s a movie I haven’t seen in a long time. It would be a good one to rewatch. 

I was going to write an introduction for that poem as well, but ended up not doing so. As in many arts, haiku poets have a tradition of calling back to previous poets by reusing their imagery and/or adding a new twist to their theme. 

Basho wrote a famous poem referencing an older poem about the dreams and hopes of warrior becoming nothing but grass. So playing with that idea, I reworded it as the poem above.

I was going to write an introduction for that poem as well, but ended up not doing so. As in many arts, haiku poets have a tradition of calling back to previous poets by reusing their imagery and/or adding a new twist to their theme.

Nicely done and very interesting! I've never been to Japan and know very little about their culture. One of those destinations on the list...

Very well written poem and experiment. You've got a creative mind.  It reminds us that we are very temporary on this planet, and nature will carry on long after we're gone.  I've not dabbled in poetry in a very long time, I seem to have too much to do most of the time, and not enough down time. I need to retire!

I do like the aquatic pictures since I am a sea lover. What kind of shrimp are those?

Now would be a good time to visit Japan given the falling price of the yen. Your money would go a long way. 

For shorter poems like these, you don’t really need to carve out writing time. They’re more of an awareness exercise. If you’re conscious of the fact that you want to write them, you start looking around yourself for images and ideas to work with and you find them. 

I generally ‘write’ while I’m on my way to and from work. Things come to me and I make notes in my phone while I’m at a traffic light. 🤣

As for the shrimp, I don’t know what kind it is. I did look at the plaque at the aquarium where I took the pictures, but I can’t recall the name now. I’ll see if I can find out.
