<center>The emergence of AI generated art and texts has provoked a roller coaster ride of emotions over the past year or so. I have felt fear, confusion, and finally optimism! In the beginning, I boycotted this new tool entirely until finally asking my sister, who works part time as a writer, what she thinks. To my surprise she and the company she works for has embraced ChatGPT generated content!  She showed me how she uses ChatGPT to create click-bate-y titles for the articles she creates. She is paid to write eye catching but somewhat superficial blog posts to keep companies relevant in search results. In her line of work, it makes sense to use such tools and I even tried it out to generate a subject line for one article I wrote here on Hive. Yes, I tried ChatGPT once. Besides that single experience I am not sure if adding this tool to my metaphorical tool box will truly support my journey as an artist, herbalist, creative, and on my path to become a more inspiring writer.  Now, I think I need to say a bit about myself and my background to fully explain the situation. I am 31, a true & true millennial who grew up in the 90's and early 2000s. Part of my childhood was spent playing in backyards of semi-suburban USA and exploring creeks at the intersection of the rural and the wild. Alone and with friends we invented magical worlds inspired by books and directly channeled from nature and our own minds. Another part of my childhood was spent behind a computer screen interacting with the Sims games and experiencing the world through the filter of the emerging internet. Now, as an adult, I continue to straddle both the digital and the physical realms. The majority of my income in a financial sense comes from my work online; selling my physical and digital products as well as messing around with crypto currencies. The rest of my life is spent in the soil; planting, building my future home, and harvesting food & medicine from my garden.  ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ So, when I ponder the question of **AI the beginning or the end?** I must also ask myself how AI will support my work as a creative person, as a mystic, as student of natural medicine, and as a writer who wants to inspire others in all of these areas? Putting the potential for financial gain aside, will using A.I. to correct and generate my writing make me a better writer? I think no. How could it? Just like the advent of typing on a computer doesn't help my penmanship. Just as sewing on a machine doesn't improve my skills in hand stitching ...  # AI may very well help me produce my articles faster but it won't add quality, humor, or the feeling of humanness that I wish to impart. I am so grateful that I have been able to earn an income by sharing my work online but, ultimately I strive to inspire others to create with their hands, till the soil, and appreciate the inherent value of nature above all else.  Okay, you get it. I don't and won't be using AI to generate text, images, or anything else, but ... that wasn't the question was it? # AI ... the beginning or the end? Certainly not the end. In fact, I rebel from my creativity being neglected in favor of the ease of using AI. And as I embark on my first calendar year of writing online for a living I see this as an opportunity ... ... an opportunity to create, to adapt in my own genuine way, to continue painting, sewing, and writing by hand inspired by nature, my soul, my mind. But hey, if you, dear reader, wish to use AI generated images, ChatGPT, and whatever else, go for it! I may very well upvote your semi-human creations :) Either way, hugs for all! </center>

Lovely to read your post :) i think. i understand... suffice is to say.. there is NOTHING quite like a scrap book.. i mean.. its got its own kind of magic that no digital document will ever hold.. BUT. also well. i was never very good at scrap books, but i think i may have tried making one once.. but im lefthanded and have terrible handwriting.. and its so SLOW.. i really do prefer typing.. what to do! b ut i get you.. the way i see it, and i am a nature lover who lived in the remote jungle of south india for 20 years/// the way i see it is.. that.. AI will give us our lives back! and for some people they dont really know what the heck that is. because they may have never had one outside of the scope of making money and dealing with the mundane things.. but.. it looks like you know how to enjoy the moment. and so i tell you.. one day, very soon, AI may well make it so much easier to have these things taken care of. leaving you to to enjoy! i hope AI also helps you play with your creativity in amazing ways.. thanks for posting and sharing! <3

I love that you lived in the forest for 20 years! That is amazing. And I do appreciate your feedback on the pros of AI. Of course I use technology to make money in order to spend more time doing what I love to do rather than spending most of the daylight hours working in customer servive as I did for years, so, I get it. I think the key is balance ~ ~ right now I see a lot pf unbalance around AI: folks feeling a lot of fear around the potential of loosing their livelihood as an artist as well as people trading in their physical skills for digital tools. I want to keep my handwriting, hand sewing, slow food & slow lifestyle alive as long as I live. Everyone else can and should do whatever they feel is right for them <3

AI is an awesome tool that is handy for way more than generating content. The knowledge alone that (ChatGPT for instance) possesses is incredible and makes searching the internet almost obsolete. Ask it about a plant or just describe one to it and see what it knows. Ask it about best farming practices in a given region and see what it knows. So many folks just focus on taking a shortcut to 'creating content' that it is astounding that they fail to realize its full potential.

I hear you. I supposed I am old school and would rather get my information about plants and gardening from humans, either by asking them or reading their original blog posts which is where ChatGPT is conglomerating its information anyway. But, I don't want it to sound like no one should use AI, I just won't be. As I said my sister is using ChatGPT everyday for her work and I support her if that is helpful for her. I wanted to respond to this Question of the Week with my own take and my own opinion. My opinion is that AI isn't helpful in my creative process. Hopefully I was able to illustrate that point. I hear you as well but this is *consolidated* information with the ability to per say ask it for a contradicting view or critical analysis etcetera. There are also custom GPT models where they can be devoted to a specific topic or set of tasks. For instance I made a custom model with the entirety of [CD3WD](http://www.cd3wdproject.org/CD3WD/INDEX.HTM) available to it. So it has all of its knowledge (in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Italian) all available to ask questions of via a single interface. All I am saying is AI is extremely useful in a massive variety of ways.

By not using AI (and other digital tools), and instead focus on keeping your "analogue" skills sharp, you are actually doing a great service for the diversification of human knowledge. Kinda like how certain carpenters continued working with hand tools, even when power tools came out, or certain sailors kept navigating with a sextant instead of relying on GPS. It's always a good idea to have a backup, in case something fails...

I totally agree!!! I love the perspective that keeping up with analogue skills it is a way of maintaining the diversification of human knowledge, gonna mull that over in my mind for a while.
