Creating a light painting outdoors on the shortest night of the year was not my thing. I retreated to the studio. From time to time the comments say that an expensive camera is necessary for light painting. This is not true. Many cameras are limited to an exposure time of 30 seconds. This makes it possible to take a light painting, but limits the possibilities. Almost everyone owns a smartphone these days. With the right app, light painting shots are possible. I would like to demonstrate this today.

In der kürzesten Nacht des Jahres unter freiem Himmel ein Lightpainting zu kreieren war nicht mein Ding. Ich zog mich ins Studio zurück. Hin und wieder ist den Kommentaren zu entnehmen, dass eine teure Kamera für ein Lightpainting notwendig sei. Dies ist nicht der Fall. Viele Kameras sind auf eine Belichtungszeit von 30 Sekunden begrenzt. Damit ist die Aufnahme  eines Lightpaintings möglich, schränkt die Möglichkeiten jedoch ein. Fast jeder ist heutzutage Besitzer eines Smartphones. Mit der richtigen App sind Lightpainting-Aufnahmen möglich. Das möchte ich heute unter Beweis stellen.

As I had still set up last week's set in the studio, I used the ORBOMAT with the same program. I only changed the light source. At some point I had built and programmed an LED circuit with an Arduino and a Sub-D connector. So that it fitted perfectly to the ORBOMAT. That should be enough for this comparison.

Da ich das Set der letzten Woche noch im Studio aufgebaut hatte, benutzte ich den ORBOMAT mit dem gleichen Programm. Lediglich die Lichtquelle tauschte ich aus. Ich hatte irgendwann einen LED-Kreis mit Arduino und Sub-D-Stecker gebaut und Programmiert. So dass er perfekt an den ORBOMAT passte. Für diesen Vergleich sollte das ausreichen.

The SLOW SHUTTER app makes it possible to create a live composite image, similar to an Olympus camera. The app settings are shown in the following image. There is certainly more to be gained. For a first attempt, I found the result in the picture above ok.

Die App SLOW SHUTTER macht es möglich, ähnlich wie bei einer Olympus- Kamera, ein Live-Composite-Bild zu erstellen. Die Einstellungen der App zeige ich im folgenden Bild. Da ist sicher noch mehr rauszuholen. Für einen ersten Versuch fand ich das Ergebnis oben im Bild ok.

Because I found the result usable, I did a second light painting without the vertical bars with the same settings as described above. All you need is a smartphone, the "Slow Shutter" app and a tripod for the smartphone.

Weil ich das  Ergebnis brauchbar fand, machte ich noch ein zweites Lightpainting ohne die senkrechten Steifen mit den gleichen Einstellungen wie oben beschrieben. Alles was ihr dafür benötigt, ist ein Smartphone, die App "Slow Shutter" und ein Stativ für das Smartphone.

It is important that all automatic settings are switched off, otherwise the images will be overexposed, as the following example shows. Here I had the ISO set to automatic. This switches to automatic every time the app is started and must be reset to the lowest possible value before each shot. I noticed this too late here.

Wichtig bei den Einstellungen ist, dass jegliche Automatik ausgeschaltet wird, sonst werden die Bilder überbelichtet, wie folgendes Beispiel zeigt. Hier hatte ich die ISO auf Automatik stehen. Diese schaltet sich bei jedem Start der App auf Automatik und muss vor jeder Aufnahme auf einen möglichst kleinen Wert zurückgesetzt werden. Das hatte ich hier zu spät bemerkt.

Since I was already there, I tested the light painting function on my GoPro at the same time. The GoPro 12 is equipped with a thread to which I can screw a mount for a hot shoe. This allows flexible use without having to buy all the expensive accessories from GoPro. I wouldn't have bought the thing without this thread. The GoPro is capable of filming light painting. The time-lapse film and a final image are saved. That's a useful thing. I will report on the movie function in another post. Today I'm only showing the final image (below).

Weil ich schon mal dabei war, testete ich die Lightpainting-Funktion an meiner GoPro gleich mit. Die GoPro 12 ist mit einem Gewinde ausgestattet, an dem ich eine Halterung für einen Blitzschuh schrauben kann. Das ermöglicht einen flexiblen Einsatz ohne das ganze teure Zubehör von GoPro kaufen zu müssen. Ohne dieses Gewinde hätte ich mir das Ding nicht gekauft. Die GoPro ist in der Lage, das Lightpainting zu filmen. Dabei wird der Zeitraffer-Film und ein finales Bild abgespeichert. Das ist eine brauchbare Sache. Über die Filmfunktion werde ich in einem weiteren Post berichten. Heute zeige ich nur das finale Bild (unten).

The shots from the CANON are of course the better ones here. I just wanted to test the possibilities of other devices. I am also convinced that with a little more practice and experience, I would achieve better results with the smartphone or the GoPro. I found the results useful for a quick first attempt.

Die Aufnahmen von der CANON sind hier natürlich die besseren. Es ging mir einfach mal darum, die Möglichkeiten anderer Geräte zu testen. Ich bin auch davon überzeugt, dass ich mit etwas mehr Übung und Erfahrung bessere Ergebnisse mit dem Smartphone oder der GoPro erzielen würde. Für einen ersten Versuch auf die Schnelle fand ich die Ergebnisse brauchbar. 
Wie immer zeige ich zum Schluss das Set und die Tools.

<h2>What Is Light Painting?</h2>

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
