La soledad se convirtió en su mejor compañera. Su vida siempre fue un desastre. No fue fácil quedar huérfano a los 10 años y tener que aprender a sobrevivir solo y en las calles.

Cuando tenía 16 comenzó su carrera de rap callero. Tenía toda la zona del parque cubierta con sus increibles y espontáneas rimas. Las personas se aglomeraban para escuchar lo que tenía que cantar, mientras que Jerome disfrutaba dándoles un show.

Una tarde, entre la multitud, habia un caza talentos y le ofreció un contrato con una disquera. El chico se volvió loco, nunca tuvo tanta atención y tantas cosas que podía llamar "mias".

Con la fama vino el dinero, con el dinero las extravagancias. Sin darse cuenta, Jerome entró  en el terrible mundo de las drogas y lo perdió todo.

Fue muy díficil para él recuperar el control de su vida y ganarle la pelea a las drogas. Con mucho trabajo y fuerza de voluntad logró estar sobrio. Quiso darle vuelta a la página, comenzar de nuevo, fue cuando se mudó a un tranquilo pueblo en las afueras de la ciudad.

Consiguió un trabajo de asistente en el archivo del banco del pueblo. Le asignaron sacar las copias y organizar documentos en carpetas. Era un trabajo tranquilo, solitario en el sotano del edificio. Ideal para Jerome.

La gente comenzó a hablar sobre él. Se preguntaban por qué era tan solotario. El chico no debió prestar atención a los comentarios que hacian sus compañeros en los pasillos, pero Jerome le obsesionaba tener la aprobación de los demás.

Una mañana se presentó una mujer en la oficina. Dijo que era la novia de Jerome y que estaba enfermo de un fuerte catarro. Los compañeros de trabajo de su novio fueron muy amables y la invitaron a almorzar. Surgió una amistad entre ellos.

Pasó el tiempo y la novia de Jerome logró conquistar el cariño de todos en el pueblo. Jerome ahora era respetado cuando salía por pan y frutas, ya nadie ha laba sobre él. Parecía encajar con todos los demás. 

Ella trabajaba mucho, era programadora para una empresa extranjera, así que casi siempre estaba trabajando y no salía mucho de casa. Eran la pareja perfecta, eso es lo que comentaba la gente del pueblo. Jerome estaba feliz por haber conseguido adaptarse a algo por fin en su vida.

Con los años, envejecieron. Llevaron una vida tranquila. Ella con los martes de cartas y los viernes del club de reposteria. Él con su trabajo en el banco y jugando al dominó con los los vecinos de la cuadra. 

Un día la vecina se acercó a la casa para llevar galletas de jengibre, las favoritas de la mujer de Jerome. La puerta estaba abierta así que después de tocar, entró. 

Jerome estaba sentado en el sofá viendo televisión. La vecina pensó que dormía y al acercarse un poco notó que su viejo vecino había fallecido. 

Llamó una ambulancia y mientras llegaban buscó a la mujer de Jerome por toda la casa. No la encontró, pero encontró su ropa y una peluca, pestañas y uñas postizas en la habitación de Jerome. 

En la computadora que sostenía el difunto sobre sus piernas, encontraron  el montaje que estaba haciendo de de él y su esposa en la heladería de la señora Julia. Los vecinos comenzaron a darse cuenta que nunca vieron a la pareja al mismo tiempo en ninguna reunión.

El día del funeral de Jerome, fue todo el pueblo. No solamente estaban despidiendo a un buen amigo, sino a dos grandes personas que formaron parte de la comunidad.

# Jerome, I was not alone

Loneliness became his best companion. His life was always a disaster. It was not easy being orphaned at the age of 10 and having to learn to survive alone and on the streets.

When he was 16 he started his career as a street rapper. He had the whole park area covered with his incredible and spontaneous rhymes. People would crowd around to hear what he had to sing, while Jerome enjoyed giving them a show.

One afternoon, in the crowd, there was a talent scout and he offered him a record deal. The kid went crazy, he never had so much attention and so many things he could call "mine".

With fame came money, with money came extravagance. Without realizing it, Jerome entered the terrible world of drugs and lost everything.

It was very difficult for him to regain control of his life and win the fight against drugs. With a lot of hard work and willpower he managed to get sober. He wanted to turn the page, to start over, that's when he moved to a quiet town on the outskirts of the city.

He got a job as an assistant in the archives of the town's bank. She was assigned to make copies and organize documents into folders. It was a quiet, solitary job in the basement of the building. Ideal for Jerome.

People started talking about him. They wondered why he was so solitary. The boy must not have paid attention to the comments made by his coworkers in the hallways, but Jerome was obsessed with having the approval of others.

One morning a woman showed up at the office. She said she was Jerome's girlfriend and that he was sick with a bad cold. Her boyfriend's co-workers were very kind and invited her to lunch. A friendship developed between them.

Time passed and Jerome's girlfriend managed to win the affection of everyone in town. Jerome was now respected when he went out for bread and fruit, no one talked about him anymore. He seemed to fit in with everyone else. 

She worked a lot, she was a programmer for a foreign company, so she was almost always working and didn't leave the house much. They were the perfect couple, that's what people in town commented. Jerome was happy that he had finally managed to fit something into his life.

Over the years, they got older. They led a quiet life. She with Tuesday cards and Friday baking club. He with his job at the bank and playing dominoes with the neighbors down the block. 

One day the neighbor came over to the house to bring gingerbread cookies, Jerome's wife's favorite. The door was open so after knocking, she went inside. 

Jerome was sitting on the couch watching television. The neighbor thought he was sleeping and as she got a little closer she noticed that her old neighbor had passed away. 

She called an ambulance and as they arrived she looked all over the house for Jerome's wife. He didn't find her, but he did find her clothes and a wig, eyelashes and false nails in Jerome's room. 

On the computer the deceased was holding on his lap, they found the montage he was making of him and his wife at Mrs. Julia's ice cream parlor. Neighbors began to realize that they never saw the couple at the same time at any gathering.

On the day of Jerome's funeral, it was the whole town. Not only were they saying goodbye to a good friend, but to two great people who were part of the community.
