Legend has it that near a small stream lived two tribes that depended on this water source for their daily activities. One of them had its settlement on the upper riverbank and the other on the lower.

>Cuenta la leyenda que cerca de un pequeño arroyo vivían dos tribus que dependían de esta fuente agua para sus actividades cotidianas. Una de ellas tenía su asentamiento en la parte alta de la ribera  y la otra en la parte baja.

In the past, the two tribes had fought for control of the stream. However, being the only source of this vital liquid, the two villages had agreed to share its use.

In early spring, several plants bloomed at the river´s delta. Many of these plants adorned the valley with many colors. Curious reddish algae could be seen, which, when reflecting the light on them gave off an intense fuchsia color in the water.  However, a plague also began in the tribe of the lower riverbank. The cattle began to get sick and die, thus diminishing the capacity to work for the plow and the source of food that it could represent. The village shaman, while checking the dead animals, observed that they showed areas of intense purple color in their flesh. This was not a good omen. 



>En el pasado ambos pueblos se habían enfrentado por el control del arroyo. Sin embargo al ser la única fuente de este vital líquido, las dos aldeas habían acordado que compartirían su uso.<br>
Al inicio de la primavera florecieron  varias plantas en la desembocadura del arroyo. Muchas de estas plantas adornaban con variados colores el valle, incluso se podían apreciar unas curiosas algas rojizas que al reflejar la luz en ellas se desprendía un color fucsia intenso en el agua.  Sin embargo también empezó una peste en la tribu de la ribera baja, el ganado comenzó a enfermar y a morir, mermando así la capacidad de trabajado para el arado así como la fuente de alimentos que éstos podían representar. El chamán del pueblo  al revisar los animales muertos observó que éstos mostraban zonas de un color púrpura intenso en su carne lo cual no era buen augurio.

A few days later, some elderly people and children had episodes of convulsions, as if evil spirits had taken possession of their bodies. Many of these in their erratic attacks were foaming at the mouth, so without hesitation, the shaman declared that it was a spell that had been performed by the tribe of the upper riverbank to kill them, take their land, and complete control the river. 

The great chief of the tribe, hearing the shaman's explanation, had no choice to defend his people. He decided to send a group of brave warriors at night to the tribe of the high bank to retaliate by killing some cattle.  The chief's son, not very convinced of the shaman's arguments, told his father that perhaps this phenomenon was due to the strange algae that grew at the river´s delta. But the father, sure of what the shaman said pointed out, decided to maintain the attack on the neighboring tribe.

>A los pocos días algunos ancianos y niños presentaron episodios de convulsiones, como si unos espíritus malignos se hubiesen apoderado de esos cuerpos. Muchos de estos pobladores en esos ataques erráticos desprendían espuma por su boca, por eso sin dudarlo el chamán declaró que se trataba de un embrujo que habían realizado desde la tribu de la parte alta de ribera para poder diezmarlos y quedarse con sus tierras y el dominio completo del arroyo.<br> 
El gran jefe de la tribu al escuchar la explicación del chamán, no tuvo más opción que defender a su pueblo, así que decidió enviar a un grupo de valientes guerreros en la noche hacia la tribu de la ribera alta para tomar represalia matando algunas reses.  El hijo del jefe no muy convencido de los argumentos del chamán, le dice al padre que tal vez este fenómeno se debía a esas extrañas algas que crecieron en la desembocadura del arroyo, pero el padre seguro que se trata de un hechizo como señalaba el chamán, decide mantener el ataque a la tribu vecina.

The next morning the villagers arrived very agitatedly before the hierarch of the tribe of the upper bank river, telling him about the murdered animals and that their blood had stained the part of the stream where they got their drinking water. The chief did not understand what the motive for this attack was, but it was clear to him who the perpetrators were.

Some of the people of the tribe of upper bank river had to travel several kilometers through the valley to find a clean water area in the stream and thus be able to carry their wooden barrels to the community with this precious liquid for the most basic things of the tribe such as drinking and cooking with it. However, the stream boundary guards of the lower bank tribe noticed such a displacement and upon bringing the news to the village, the shaman concluded that the plague that was plaguing his people was because the water was being contaminated by the upper bank people. Without further ado, the great chief again ordered a nocturnal attack on the neighboring tribe, but this time he left a message at the foot of the hut of the chief of this village, challenging him to appear at dawn on the premises of the stream if he wanted more clean water for his community.


>A la mañana siguiente los pobladores llegaron muy agitados ante el jerarca de la tribu de la ribera alta contándole sobre los animales asesinados y que la sangre de éstos habían teñido la parte del arroyo donde ellos se surtían de agua para beber. El jerarca no entendía cuál era el motivo de este ataque pero sí tenía claro de quienes eran los autores.<br>
Algunos de los pobladores de la tribu de la ribera alta tuvieron que desplazarse varios kilómetros por el valle para poder encontrar una zona de agua limpia en el arroyo y así poder cargar sus barricas de madera llevando a la comunidad este preciado líquido para las cosas más básicas de la tribu como beberla y cocinar con ella. No obstante los guardianes de los límites del arroyo de la tribu de la ribera baja se percataron de tal desplazamiento y al llevar la noticia al pueblo, el chamán concluyó que la peste que estaba azotando a su gente era porque el agua estaba siendo contaminada por los pobladores de la ribera alta. Sin más, el gran jefe ordena de nuevo un ataque nocturno a la tribu vecina pero esta vez dejando un mensaje a los pies de la choza del jerarca de este pueblo donde lo retaba a presentarse al despuntar el alba a los predios del arroyo si quería más agua limpia para su comunidad.

The chief, still not understanding the cause of these attacks, went with a group of his best men to the affront of the great chief of the tribe of the lower shore. When the two leaders met, they began to accuse each other, and without reason, a fierce fight began that left more than 200 men dead from both villages, including both chiefs. 

The scavengers soon arrived in the area and flew over the corpses that the heat was rapidly decomposing. The shadows of birds in the riverside sky alerted both villages that something bad had happened at the edge of the creek. When many villagers arrived at the battlefield and saw the bodies of many of their fathers, brothers, sons, and especially of their tribes leaders, they were repulsed by such barbarism. The women of the two tribes embraced each other and carefully began to clean the bodies to be buried with dignity. The sadness was so great that the water of the stream was not necessary to wash away the blood, the tears of these women were so abundant that they rolled across the ground opening a furrow each time wider and of greater flow, that at the end of the sunset they had formed a great lake of fresh water.

>El jerarca sin entender aún la causa de estos ataques acude con un grupo de sus mejores hombres a la afrenta del gran jefe de la tribu de la ribera baja. Al encontrarse ambos líderes comenzaron las acusaciones entre ellos y sin entrar en razón empezó una lucha encarnecida que dejó más de 200 hombres muertos de ambos poblados incluyendo a ambos jefes.<br> 
Los carroñeros no tardaron en llegar a la zona y sobrevolar los cadáveres que el calor descomponía rápidamente. La sombra de las aves sobre el cielo de la ribera alertaron a ambos pueblos que algo malo había ocurrido en los límites del arroyo. Al llegar muchos pobladores al campo de batalla y ver los cuerpos de muchos de sus padres, hermanos, hijos y en especial de sus líderes de comarca, sintieron repudio ante tanta barbarie. Las mujeres de las dos tribus se abrazaron y con cuidado comenzaron a limpiar los cuerpos para ser dignamente enterrados. La tristeza era tan grande que no hizo falta el agua del arroyo para lavar la sangre, las lágrimas de estas mujeres eran tan abundantes que rodaban a través del suelo abriendo un surco cada vez más ancho y de mayor caudal, que al término del ocaso habían formado una  gran laguna de agua dulce.

Many say that since then, both tribes merged and formed a single community. That bloody episode sealed their differences, and they understood that the needs of a people are not so different from those of neighboring peoples. They all struggle to subsist, but it is better if it is done in harmony and if a stream managed to divide them, a vast lake achieved a true brotherhood between them.

>Muchos dicen que desde entonces ambas tribus se fusionaron y formaron una sola comunidad. Ese sangriento episodio selló sus diferencias y comprendieron que las necesidades de un pueblo no son tan distintas a la de los pueblos vecinos. Todos luchan por subsistir pero es mejor si se hace en armonía y si un arroyo logró dividirlos, un vasto lago logró una verdadera hermandad entre ellos.
