My First Trip to Borneo Indigenous Market to Purchase Pesticide-Free Wild Ferns, Dayak's Rice Wine, All-Natural Loofah, Traditional Snacks and Sarawak Street Food
Recently my husband and I visited the Borneo Indigenous Market at Seri Kembangan, Selangor; some 20km from our apartment. There are plenty of markets around here but this market is unique because the vendors sell indigenous products from Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia's territories on Borneo Island).

This was our first trip to this market despite it has been around for a number of years. And it is only open every Saturday, from 7 AM to 11 AM. So because of the distance and the limited opening time, it was a bit difficult to make arrangements to visit the place.

Anyway, my hubby and I decided to give it a try since we missed eating some of our favorite food from home and we thought maybe we can get lucky.

We woke up early on Saturday and after breakfast, we drove about thirty minutes to reach the market. The journey was smooth with no traffic jams along the way.

It wasn't too hard to find the place because we had been to this area several times in the past. However, it was difficult to find a spot to park our car due to the Saturday crowd going for breakfast in nearby coffee shops or eateries. We had to park our car quite far and walk to the market. I didn't mind walking anyway.

You can see the vendors' tents alongside the road. We came a bit late so most of the early morning customers had left by the time we reached this place. Apparently one had to come as early as 7AM to grab the fresh produce from Borneo, like the Dayak eggplants.

We stopped by these two stalls to buy Sarawak fried noodles and kolok mee, two of Sarawak's most famous street food. The noodles were not pre-packed from home but cooked on the spot, upon the customer's order. I like that a lot because that means the food is freshly prepared.

![2.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/coloringiship/23xepUhuT3oFAUJewGWczZmEXToVJMvs5eco9imZS8iToQdLZnWFGwKAgpy9faRcQBAM6.jpg)

These two stalls were selling traditional rattan bags and Dayak costumes. They were pricey since they were handmade, and rightly so. I knew it was not easy to make these bags or sew those costumes.

![3.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/coloringiship/23zGenkyW1JVWycJ2bcwLWphapdtAtsWoN2tGqXBqG827QxSTmJRr6sA6L6ohLLMPYnqy.jpg)

And this lady was selling traditional Sabah and Sarawak snacks like "amplang" (fish snacks), "rempeyek" (peanuts and anchovies snacks), and "kuih cincin" (ring biscuits). I bought a couple of snacks - amplang and rempeyek - for the kids.

![4.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/coloringiship/AK7ybX71sButo4XBqWawHtmWHFM8T5grHH9XvpHzaE2CFt4HoP2YdHyNwcCJe5F.jpg)

And my most treasured purchase - was organic jungle produce called "miding" (scientific name: stenochlaena palustris), and "paku uban" (scientific name: nephrolepis biserrate). Both are wild ferns of different species that are common in Sarawak. They do grow in other places in Malaysia but most people don't realize they can be consumed. "Miding" is a famous vegetable dish and is even served in 5-star hotels in Sarawak. So what do they taste like? Fresh, crunchy, and most importantly, pesticide-free.

Oh how I missed eating them! I was so grateful I could purchase them at the market because I knew they were everyone's favorites and sold fast.

The Sarawak fried noodles and kolok mee I purchased from two sellers mentioned in the second photo (above).

The snacks - rempeyek for the kids. Amplang is not shown in the picture. And another interesting find...authentic all-natural loofah made out of a dried tropical gourd. Nope, this is not those synthetic loofahs often sold at shops elsewhere. Again, this is not commonly found elsewhere in Malaysia except in Sarawak. I grew up using this type of loofah to scrub off while taking baths. I was glad it was sold at the market and thought it was a bit pricey, I didn't mind paying for it at all.

And another valuable find - "tuak keladi" or rice wine with yam flavor! Yum! It's like other rice wine produced in other countries like sake (Japan), sato (Thailand), mi jiu (China), and makgeolli (Korea). But of course, the taste is different from one another.

Tuak is a big part of my Dayak culture because it is heavily used in ancient rituals and our local festivals.

I don't know how to make tuak but I had seen my mom make it several times using fermented glutinous rice and "ragi" (yeast). Like other types of wine, the longer it is kept, the better it taste.

This tuak I bought had a pleasant slightly sweet yam flavor which I like so much. It can be deceiving though - it may take one or two shots before one started to feel tipsy 😁

And finally, a selfie with my hubby before we headed home. Though I was grateful for the purchases we made, I was a bit disappointed I didn't manage to buy my favorite "terung Dayak" (Dayak eggplant), and "upa nyiur" (literal translation - coconut root). Perhaps we should come very early in the morning to grab those before the rest of the crowd.

Anyway, I was happy we could visit the market and I look forward to our next trip to this Borneo Indigenous Market.

Dear @coloringiship, what a great market adventure you have had.

I'm so sorry you didn't manage to buy your favorite products, at this point is when the saying "early bird catches the worm" becomes true. Best of luck for your next visits to this exquisite market of cultural roots.
