Is my love affair with parkrun over?
A big chunk of my 13181 steps today were done at Capalaba parkrun. It was nice. Lots of birds. Ponds were full. Several familiar, smiling faces. A puppy dog who was keen for pats. It was a totally fine way to start a Saturday morning.

And... and, the almost obsessive love affair I've had with parkrun seems that it may well have run its course. (No pun intended).

For several years now (with a healthy break for a Covid shut down)  I have been *striving, seeking, trying* to get all as many parkrun achievements as possible.

I've run or walked 164 (5km) parkruns.

I've gone to parkruns in 122 *different* locations,
across 6 different states and territories (in Australia).

I've volunteered a total of 60 times,
at something like 30 different locations,
in 22 *different* roles.

I've helped new parkrun locations launch.

I've helped train new volunteers.

I've contributed to the parkrun Australia newsletter.
Heck, I've even written on *behalf* of parkrun Australia.

And... I think I'm kind of over it. All of it: The parkrun stats. The endless challenges. The same conversations about parkrun stats and challenges over and over and over again.

But I'm not quite ready or willing to walk away from parkrun yet.

I like the tiny bit of routine it gives my otherwise wonderfully fluid life. I like that I can hang my week around Saturday and that it's a consistent influence on my life. I like that there are many options for different locations and that we still can drive in different directions each weekend.

And since I adore going to new places, perhaps the one thing that does truly excite me (and Mr B) is doing new parkruns in new locations. Since we've got more than 400 of them in Australia and more than 2000 (spread across something like 20 countries) worldwide, I think that will keep us pretty entertained for as long as we still want to do this free, weekly, timed 5km community event ;) 

But I think, for the most part, I'm ready to spend more of my time doing things that are more *meaningful* to me. Seemed like a good reason to spend less time thinking about and talking about parkrun; to do more good in the world in the unique way that only I can.

Bless parkrun for all it's brought to my life (foremost being my darling love, Brad). May it live a long and prosperous life for many, many years to come.

I feel exhausted just reading about this.  Lol.  But really.  Why are you tired of parkruns?  Is there anything about them you love?  If so, is there a way to design something that would just incorporate that part?

I have promised myself that I will start swimming again this week, but I am in "the hormone zone," a seven to 10 day stretch in which I alternately cry, feel angry, laugh uncontrollably, sweat profusely, and shiver.  It was worse before I started taking supplements that are basically plant hormones.  However, it is still not fun for anyone.

Anyhow, hormones or not, I am going to the pool tomorrow. It has been too long.

For some of the reasons I mentioned above and I thrive on doing new things, so when there's nothing new to do I get bored and demotivated. But there's two other things:

1. The kind of people I most love hanging out with (read: people who think about big things, want to solve big problems, believe they are capable of big things) aren't at parkrun. None of my closest friends go to parkrun. They might run but they do so for well being and connection to their body, not to collect stats or pursue what are essentially meaningless stats. I long for deep and meaningful conversations - all the time - and I almost never get that at parkrun. I get surface level conversations, that are fine for building rapport but I don't want to *stay* there. I want depth, always.

2. I'm struggling with a calf issue and my heart has been working extra hard since I got vaccinated (that's what I believe it is that I'm feeling but I can't be sure - only that my heart is working harder now than ever before, even though I am running slower). Because I can't currently run fast - and I !LUV running fast; it feels like play and fun to me - that *also* makes parkrun boring for me. I can walk or run slowly anywhere, out of my house, at the beach, anywhere gorgeous I choose. And I can do it alone, something I usually prefer over running with others unless we're working with each other to push and see what our limits are.

I love these questions, thank you, Harlow. It's given me an opportunity to revisit my thinking on this. So... I love *improving*. I have been reading a fabulous book called "Older Yet Faster" (you don't need to add to your list - unless you plan to suddenly take up running, in which case, for you I would make a different recommendation for your attention/energy). It's specifically about helping people to transition to running barefoot (or in truly minimalist shoes) and making *improvements* to posture *and* speed. It was recommended by other barefoot/minimalist runners when I said that I still hadn't been able to resolve the calf issue with everything I already know.

(This is a long answer... I'm thinking out loud it seems). So the main drive for me to still go to parkrun - apart from habit and accompanying my beau - is to remind me to do the calf exercises. I'm using it as a *motivational* tool - but I'm not sure that answers you question... The only other thing I clearly love that relates to parkrun is I love going to new places/exploring. But there's only so much in the budget to do weekends away to new places and we've - bless - done almost all the parkruns within 2 hours drive of home. 

What else can I think of? Hmm, well I love dogs. And they're allowed at most parkruns. So maybe I can focus on "how many dogs can I pat at parkrun this morning?". I also love visiting friends - not that I have that many of my dearest ones that close to me geographically. But maybe I can deliberately pick some parkruns to repeat with the goal to see my dearest friends a little more often...

Oh my gosh. That sounds super challenging. Definitely not fun. Is that linked to your menstrual cycle? Or a peri-menopausal/ menopausal thing? (That you're aware of?) I'm grateful that as I focused on getting healthier and healthier physically many of my PMS symptoms vanished almost entirely. I get a little sluggish in the last 24-48 hours before I start bleeding. And if I feel more likely to cry for no obvious reason then I'll consider where I am in my cycle. But I'm grateful - it's all so much better since I move my body more consistently and in whatever was is honouring of what my body wants. But I also made changes to my diet and eat waaaaaaay less crap than I ever have before. And I drink more water. And I think the tapping (EFT) on past trauma probably made a huge difference that's hard to quantify. Hmm, that's a lot of things. I guess I should be proud of myself for making changes to support my body so it could feel better.

Back to you... I'm proud of *you* for prioritising swimming again! Did you go yesterday/today? I know you love swimming, so I hope it went well! 😘

I love how well thought out your response was.  I appreciate it and I read every word.  I didn't reply sooner because I feel guilty because I haven't been swimming.  In fairness, though, I decided to give myself the week off.  I have been slacking for a while, and I thought starting again when I am in "the hormone zone" is a recipe for failure.

My hormones.  Sigh.  Suddenly, last year, they went insane.  I assume it is perimenopause. My doctor is remarkably unhelpful. He has gradually become more apathetic over the years.  I should find a new one. That is one of my goals, actually.  

I found these supplements -- estrosmart and menosmart.  You aren't really supposed to take both of them together I think, but now I just feel irritable, depressed, and unreasonable for a third of the month. Previously, I was either constantly perspiring or shivering.  So, the body heat symptoms are mostly under control.

This is probably way, way too much information!  Ha!

parkrun is an amazing community event, and you have given it a lot. I would like to do more locations, but getting to them on a Saturday morning is not always easy. I can still enjoy doing my local one and I will volunteer every so often. We each have to do what brings us joy. That can change over time.
