How I took up the clarinet again after 30 years

I was lucky enough to go to school in the UK in the 1970s, when kids in primary education were often offered the chance to learn an orchestral instrument for a low fee or no fee at all. Most kids in my school had recorder lessons, but I'd stuck with it, moving onto alto and tenor recorders and playing in an ensemble by the age of 9. So it seemed to me that the next step up from a recorder would be a clarinet. I thought they looked totally cool because I'd met some of the players from the Youth Orchestra of Great Britain when I was living in Le Havre in 1976 (they played under Pierre Boulez), and the clarinet seemed like a fancy, complex and bewitching instrument to me. (It still does!)

So that was the one I chose at the age of 10, and was offered one 30-minute lesson a week that took place in the music teacher's office. I carried on playing it pretty much as if it were a recorder at first, but when I got to secondary school, I had to knuckle down and learn classical. I did OK but I was afraid of the thing. It was humiliating how it would suddenly squeak, or cause me to get red in the face and out of breath.

I got as far as ABRSM Grade VI and stopped taking exams after that. But I kept playing -- in concerts, school orchestras, even in China, where I got lessons from [this guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OykH09vQNJM ) when he was head of clarinet at the People's Liberation Army marching band in Beijing. I managed to squeeze into a 3rd desk place (usually there are only two) in the Leeds College of Music orchestra to play Holst's Planets Suite. In Hong Kong, I played informally at home, with a roommate who played piano very well. But eventually, my clarinets fell into disrepair, and I carried on playing recorders of various sizes, even when I got back to the UK in the noughties. I learned a few folk tunes and started going to pub sessions. It wasn't until the [Nuvo Clarineo](https://www.nuvoinstrumental.com/products/clarineo/) came out that the clarinet even occurred to me as a possible pub instrument. It's in C, so easy to read off the same music as everyone else.

Until I walked into a pub in rural Bedfordshire one Wednesday evening in 2016, and found this rock'n'roller turned singer-songwriter with classical guitar background, who was willing to play pretty much everything I put in front of him. This was, of course, Hive's (then Steem's) very own @steevc. Over the months that followed, I tried out some early jazz pieces in New Orleans style (free online [here](http://cjam.lassecollin.se/)) on my plastic kids' clarinet, and pretty soon I was hooked. I forked out a considerable sum to Graham de Vere White, a well-known woodwind and brass repairer in Hitchin, and my clarinets came back to me.

It's been quite a journey for you. I'm so glad you found my little pub session.

My sister played clarinet at school, but hasn't kept it up. I didn't manage to get on the music programme until upper school when I did bassoon for a while. That's not the most fun instrument and I didn't play for long. My classical guitar was via private lessons. My daughter @matildamoment was picked to play violin at about age 7 and we had to pay for her lessons. She has kept it up and plays with the university orchestra now.

I think with music you get out what you put in. It can be a life-long quest to find your way with it.
