Deimos from Mars
<center>

Deimos is one of the moons of Mars, just a small one, which orbits every 30.3 hours at a distance of 23,458km. Surprisingly Mars day is only 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer than an earth day.

This image originally was posted by NASAPersevere, but then I brightened the saturation to 125% and added an oil painting effect, then added it as a blend layer to the original, and voiala!

Here's some more Proof of Work

And I can brighten it <a href="https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/darkflame/Eo44nRvhKF9BJugpLEg9shck9LGqYLPYswqNN2ziyRV9CCjYcepznk153hb992papzg.png">one more time</a> but it's probably too much.

### Deimos is 15x12x11km; odd shaped.

Earth is 12,742 km in diameter, but Mars only 6,779km.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/376203499_CONSTRUCTION_ON_MARS

I have a story about an astronaut named Captain Steel, and I won't give his story away. But I was wondering here just now, what would someone who lived on Mars do if they had to travel to Deimos and back each day? What reasons might there be? So I simulated Captain Steel jumping out of the spaceship on a shiny golden surfboard and tried to let him to grind the moon Deimos.

https://media4.giphy.com/media/RMkHQEBdZaymJwi4xB/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b952ilff7q9tcww7guyx0x5mv79ou9a3676uuin2ope3&ep=v1_videos_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=v

In our post-experiment evaluation we determined that the hypothesis was not supported. Weak gravity and powdery regolith prevent 'grinding' or 'surfing'. The weak ion electricity that Captain Steel thought looked awesome was unfortunately of no use! We had to go back to the drawing board. Even if with hand-thrusters for stabilization he just sunk into the surface, kicking up a large dust cloud. The board didn't slide against the surface it just went right through the regolith.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/darkflame/EqqxHALXb9FnZ6ws2unf3E5Y5igVMFnUTmvs7YvHJsDzA1Vu3haf2hLratePosFef7S.png)
https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1944/17/23/5866

> **Regolith:** “The entire unconsolidated or secondarily recemented cover that overlies more coherent bedrock, that has been formed by weathering, erosion, transport and/or deposition of the older material.” The regolith thus includes weathered bedrock, saprolite, soils, fragmental volcanic material, impact ejecta, glacial deposits, colluvium, alluvium, evaporitic sediments, and aeolian deposits (see Eggleton 2001)."

https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007/978-1-4614-9213-9_293-1

#### According to NASA that regolith is DEEP!

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/darkflame/EpCDmjaW6CsbwBu78oxC3G4tFAiUNWQoGUGjz5t3yNU1vEZnve3C6ngv9dg4Z6XVAw5.png)

"Deimos has a thick regolith, perhaps as deep as 328 feet (100 meters), formed as meteorites pulverized the surface. Deimos is a dark body that appears to be composed of C-type surface materials, similar to that of asteroids found in the outer asteroid belt."

"Deimos was discovered on Aug. 11, 1877 by Asaph Hall. Hall named Mars' moons for the mythological sons of Ares, the Greek counterpart of the Roman god, Mars. Deimos, whose name means dread, is the brother of Phobos."

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/darkflame/23vrpoYEcaAAo1DnMphVkpe51AWRDvwTcoiVTz7epkWKGscm8jNK6HEewAYoYD6Q7rpqL.png)
https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/smallsat2018/pdf/04_Collier.pdf

# What would you do, on Deimos?

I have a whole mission plan here, in order to get this Surfing experiment to work. I will need to measure sinkage and dust generation, and measure the regoliths response to other attempts.

> ##### **Captain Steel**: “Not quite the Tony Hawk moment I dreamed of, *(grinning) *but we learned a ton. Next time, let’s bring a pogo stick-or maybe a spider bot!”
> **Dr. Chen**: “Science is about testing boundaries, even if it means eating a little dust. Our next steps will help unlock Deimos’ secrets-and maybe one day, make space surfing a reality.”

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/darkflame/23vsJ5SGY8MHGWC9wmdDiXwA3iXtNq8g2rk2NnajQGWGft9kDhsiekwZsZhA5BCzhReRb.png)

> Captain Steele looks out the window, "The view from the Ares Venture’s forward port is something I’ll never forget. Deimos, the moon I just tried to surf, drifts quietly behind us-still shedding a faint cloud of dust from my wild experiment. But now, on the horizon, I see Phobos: Mars’ other moon, bigger, closer, and racing across the Martian sky like it’s late for a meeting with destiny."

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/darkflame/23tkhyWAQrnb77ZrH5bMCSMCyL7BDW6WZUKKYqHTaGGQU8h5ZwCb7uNPRMvznqTDiupcj.png)
https://www.yahoo.com/news/weird-grooves-mars-moon-phobos-traced-asteroids-174402320.html

Looks like Captain Steel wants to **Surf Phobos** next. I can't wait!
Once there are Humans living and working on Mars, they will want to try too.

"Therefore, to better understand the formation mechanisms of np-Fe in lunar soil, additional in situ experiments are crucial." https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1944/17/23/5866

The universe, outer space, planets, Mars, it's all incredible, I'm always drawn to everything related to it, whether it's real or science fiction, the universe is always intriguing and full of surprises!

Mars will be our new home one day, I think that's really going to happen.
