Sin embargo, al igual que otras de sus obras, al incorporarse en el torrente de la música popular venezolana, se independizó del compositor y adquirió su propio ritmo. Fue Federico el primer Vollmer nacido en Venezuela. Su padre, Gustavo Julio, originario de Hamburgo, había casado con Francisca Ribas y Palacios -única hija sobreviviente de Antonio José Ribas y Herrera y de Ignacia Palacios y Blanco-. En consecuencia, era Francisca “Panchita” sobrina del General José Félix Ribas y Herrera “Vencedor de los Tiranos en La Victoria”, y prima hermana del Libertador Simón Bolívar y Palacios. Músico autodidacta, su obra es fiel reflejo de mundo musical venezolano de mediados del siglo XIX. Ciertas características llaman la atención en sus composiciones que abarcan toda la gama de expresiones musicales de su tiempo. Polkas, mazurcas, danzas, valses e impromptus encuentran en él un destacado exponente; en sus danzas se atisban rasgos de lo que será el merengue, la guasa y algunas gaitas. Bautiza con títulos graciosos sus composiciones “Sí, sí, ya tu me lo dijiste…”, “El Porfiado”, “¿Qué si queréis cacao?”. Dedica sus piezas a compositores, artistas, y otras amistades como es el caso de “El Reloj de la Catedral”, dedicado a Arturo Michelena, “Tu y yo”, a la Srta. M.R. Sus composiciones pasaron rápidamente de los elegantes salones a plazas caraqueñas como piezas obligadas en los repertorios y bandas marciales que amenizaban fiestas y retretas, en rollos de pianola, y en los primeros discos fonográficos.
