## When Tutors Are Used As A Last Resort --- Hi there. This post is about tutors being used as a last resort before tests and projects (in mathematics and computer science). The motivation behind this post is based on a classmate being called up to tutor a high school to help him with developing a game for a programming project that was due in three days. The classmate does not have an idea of where the student is at and what programming language the student is doing. Another motivation was me being called upon (recently) to tutor a first year university calculus student the morning of. I did not like the request as I needed preparation time and wanted to know what calculus topics the student was working on. The topics below covers the scenario of hiring tutors on short notices, consequences and a few tips for students on helping the tutors help themselves prepare for good tutoring sessions.

Pixabay Image - Project
## Topics --- * Help! I Have a Math/Computer Science Test/Project In A Few Days! * Tutors & Prep Time * Letting Tutors Know About Topics ## Help! I Have a Math/Computer Science Test/Project In A Few Days! --- When it comes to tutoring, whenever students require immediate personalized assistance outside of school, they or the parent(s) would hire tutors for assistance. This immediate access for help is good for the students but not so much from the tutors side. There are times when tutors have to deal with high pressure requests from students need assistance for an upcoming test or project due date which is either in the next day, next two days or next three days. If it is a difficult or technical subject, the tutor is put in a tough spot. The tutor has to do a good job. If not, the tutor can be easily blamed for a bad grade on a test / project (even if the student left things to the last minute and had the tutor for help). In addition, the learning most likely goes to the short term memory bank as learning for more difficult / technical subjects does take time.

Pixabay Image - CPU Chip
## Tutors & Prep Time --- I am not sure about you but when students hire tutors on such short notice I view it as somewhat annoying and disrespectful. Maybe some students expect tutors to know stuff (from five years ago or so) from the top of their head at will but a lot of tutors (I would think) need some preparation time to review concepts, organize thoughts and establish plans on how to teach/present material.

Pixabay Image - Teacher
## Letting Tutors Know About Topics --- This topic about letting tutors know about what topics to cover is related with tutors and preparation time. It is helpful to a tutor if the tutor has an idea of what the student is working on in terms of concepts and topics. With that information, the tutor can utilize his/her preparation hours on targeted review, making notes, and working on practice problems. This communication tactic helps both the student client and the tutor be on the same page and reduces the pressure for both parties.

Pixabay Image - Student
---
Thank you for reading.
