GOING BACK IN TIME

<div class="text-justify">Have you ever thought about how it was for our grandparents who never had all these: electricity, telephone, internet, vehicles, and so on? It must have been difficult for them, or not? Come to think of it, most of them never imagined the possibility of any of these, but here we are today. Imagine travelling back in time to those days 🤔.

No doubt, technology has made life really easier for the human person; and its constant advancement keeps making life even easier. Though I have always had my favourite invention in mind, if not for the purpose of this prompt, I would have preferred to keep it to myself. There would, of course, have been no reason to choose since they are all of great importance to humanity, but here we are, making choices.

Yesterday, I was reading through @oluwadrey's post, and something struck me - the fact that electricity could actually be regarded as the father of numerous inventions. I have, of course, always known that, but I have never seriously considered it. Considering it for almost the first time, I almost had to relinquish what I formerly considered my favourite invention, since it is also powered by electricity. After much thought, I eventually did not, and I have my reasons.

It is all about humanity for me, and so I choose that one invention that makes reaching out to one another easier over every other invention. All the while, I have almost never considered any invention the best, until I had an experience that changed everything. Sometime in 2019, while I was with the Schoenstatt Fathers religious community as a seminarian in Ibadan, I was asked by a friend who is in the novitiate to send a message to his mother. It was supposed to be a simple errand, but it taught me how much people need to communicate with their loved ones.

I had travelled all the way from Ibadan to arrive in Port Harcourt on the evening of that same Saturday. On Monday morning, I went to visit my friend's family with the bottle of honey he had asked me to give to his mother. His mom, who was home alone, expressed the kind of emotion that made me realise how painful it could be for a mother who had not seen her son for a while. With how much she cried about not having seen her son for months, it got me thinking; I wondered how it would have been if she had not been able to communicate with him through phone all the while.

Again, I wonder how our grandparents managed. Given the fact that telecommunications were at the time either non-existent or not widespread, they had to deal with not talking to their relatives who were far away for a long time. If a mother could cry that much just because she had not been able to spend time with her son, what would it be like for the one who was deprived even of the possibility of hearing his voice? Now, imagine going back in time to such a situation.

Considering advancements in communication technology, the only thing that is impossible is contact with those who are far away. With how far we have come, relationships are being sustained even from far away; loved ones express their love to each other even from a distance; families can communicate as one big family even from all around the world, and so on. It is interesting how much fostering communication has helped humanity, but we still have a problem - the fact that the wrong usage of communication technology sometimes brings about an opposite result to what it is meant for. But then, that is not a topic for today.

Humanity will always need more reaching out to do, and I choose information technology over every other because it is capable of helping with that. Check up on your loved ones today; our grandparents who never had the opportunity would have killed to have communication technology as advanced as it is today.

I live in a turbulent country and I remember my childhood when there were electricity restrictions. And I know how difficult it is when everything "works" on electricity. Even a water well is actually a motor-pump that pulls water.
Even today, sometimes it happens that we don't have electricity, but it's either regular maintenance or some weather disaster.
Since I am an electrician myself, and I also appreciate and respect our scientist Nikola Tesla a lot, I think that electricity is one of the unsurpassed inventions. Especially if we keep in mind that it powers everything. I agree that information technologies mean a lot and have made our lives easier, but without electricity they would not be possible.
I believe that electricity is the foundation, the cornerstone of our development and something without which all technological revolutions would not be possible.
