_How is it that we’re rewarded for our mistakes?_ We, the White Deaths, were suspicious. Supplies arrived even after we’d failed our last mission. Immediately, we suspected Sophie.

She had joined our group during an attack on the city of Anarres. The Counselor forced her on us without even adding her service record. The White Deaths had a reputation as undetectable, patient snipers. Our shots took down targets from over 300 kilometers away. We were hired as elite agents on the Total Time platforms. We knew how to stay silent for weeks. We always executed flawlessly. We collected our millions and moved on to the next level, switching games. That was our basic strategy. _The White Deaths_—or _The Invisible Plague_. Our nickname.

But Sophie, fresh to the team, started chattering over the comms. She talked about witches, covens, and Marilyn Monroe’s feline movements. _For God’s sake._ Her babbling made Takeda growl—just loud enough to be picked up by an antifrank.

Takeda took a hit to the shoulder. We retreated in a hurry. Lost millions. Yet, the next day, supplies arrived without fail.

Pavlichenko and Harrison asked me what was going on. All I could do was shrug. Since childhood, our dream had been to enter _Forever War_ and reach the Infinite Level, where we’d obtain the _Diamond Knife_. Legend said the _Diamond_ granted godlike status and access to nearly all game source codes. We were on the right track—until Sophie arrived. Our curse.

It wasn’t that her voice wasn’t sweet, her gaze both sensual and tender, the way she praised our skills and told stories while we lay motionless… We loved her, in our own way. I, Simo, dreamed of her often. But she distracted us from our targets and ruined our dream. The antifranks detected us.

Gordon lost two fingers. Takeda got hit by a sonic blast that left him immobilized for a week and a half. Pavlichenko’s bullets got infected with a microbic iron virus. Our reputation dwindled. Our bank accounts stopped growing. Yet the supplies kept coming, right on time.

At first, we suspected Sophie was a spy for the Council itself—but _why_?  
_"Would you kindly shut up now?"_ I asked during the climax of the Barrayar mission.  
_"But the story is so touching,"_ she replied. _"The girl drinks a potion—"_  
_"Sophie, there’s an antifrank 525 km from your position, at 3 o’clock,"_ Takeda cut in. \*"It detected your voice. It’ll be here in less than 30 seconds."\*

I made the decision in fractions of a second, though I knew the cost. Sophie was one of the White Deaths. One of us. I broke cover—alarms blared. I intercepted the antifrank less than 200 meters away and unloaded a burst that shattered its skull. It was a deep-gen Trinity creature. Before it fell, its third spirit hurled a swarm of complex micro-ice at me. I couldn’t dodge. My avatar froze and cracked into a thousand silver fissures. Before I exploded into stardust, I heard Plunkett and Harrison’s voices in unison, asking the same question one last time:  
_"Simo… where do you live?"_

I opened my eyes. My hands were shaking. I started counting: \*140 Optimal-level games, 2,314 successful missions, 24 escapes, 1,050 targets eliminated—including 21 elite players…\* The feats of the White Deaths. The reputation of the White Deaths. All gone, just to save that chatty spy.

The Hologens alerted me to a visitor at the door. _"Personal delivery."_ I hadn’t had a personal delivery since Little Sister and Pet visited me 22 years ago—322 game years ago. They’d moved Districts. Who knew where.

I hesitated for a few seconds, hands still trembling. The visitor overrode the lock.  
_"Vision. Weapons,"_ I ordered.  
_"Vision blocked by intruder,"_ the Hologens replied. _"Weapons confiscated by the Council."_

An anthropomorphic, hooded figure stepped into my capsule. Not a hologram—a real body. That was a _Scarlet Aggression_offense, punishable by the darkest articles of the Ultragrave Codex.  
_"Whoever you are—how did you get here?"_ I asked, ready to study enemy tactics even now.
_"I am the Diamond,"_ Sophie said, unveiling her face. She smiled and opened her arms. \*"You don’t need a strategy for this."\*

**El súbito error de las muertes blancas**
¿Cómo es que nos premian por nuestros errores?, recelábamos todas las muertes blancas. Los suministros llegaron incluso después de haber fallado en la última misión. Enseguida sospechamos de Sophie. 
Entró a nuestro grupo durante un ataque contra la ciudad de Anarres. Nos la impuso el Consejero que ni siquiera añadió su hoja de servicios. Las muertes blancas teníamos una reputación como francotiradores indetectables y pacientes. Nuestros disparos abatían a las víctimas a más de 300 km de distancia. Nos contrataban como agentes élite en las plataformas de Tiempo Total. Sabíamos permanecer en silencio durante semanas. Siempre ejecutamos con eficacia. Cobrábamos nuestros millones y pasábamos al siguiente nivel mudándonos a otro juego. Era nuestra estrategia básica. Las muertes blancas o la Plaga Invisible. Nuestro sobrenombre. 
Pero Sophie, apenas llegada, comenzó a parlotear por el intercomunicador. Hablaba de brujas, aquelarres y los movimientos felinos de Marilyn Monroe. Por Dios. Su cotorreo provocó un gruñido de Takeda que fue detectado por un antifranc. Takeda resultó herido en un hombro. Nos retiramos a toda prisa. Perdimos millones. Sin embargo, al otro día llegaron sin falta los suministros. 
Pavlichenko y Harrison me preguntaron qué estaba ocurriendo. Solo atiné a encogerme de hombros. Nuestro sueño, desde niños era entrar a Forever War y alcanzar el nivel Infinito donde obtendríamos el Cuchillo de Diamantes. La leyenda decía que El “Diamantes” confería categoría de dios y acceso a casi todos los códigos fuente lúdicos. Íbamos por buen camino hasta que llegó Sophie. Nuestra maldición. 
No se trataba de que su voz no fuera dulce, su mirada sensual y tierna a un tiempo; el modo en que halagaba nuestras habilidades y contaba historias mientras permanecíamos inmóviles… La queríamos a nuestro modo. Yo, Simo, soñaba con ella muchas veces. Pero distraía la atención de los objetivos y perjudicaba nuestro sueño. Los antifranc nos detectaban. 
A Gordon le destrozaron dos dedos; Takeda recibió la onda expansiva de una descarga sónica que lo inmovilizó durante semana y media. Las balas de Pavlichenko se contagiaron de un virus de microbios férreos. Nuestra reputación menguaba, nuestras cuentas bancarias no crecían, pero los suministros seguían llegando con puntualidad. 
Al inicio sospechamos que Sophie era una espía del propio Consejo, pero ¿por qué?
—¿Tendrías la gentileza de callarte ahora? —dije durante el momento álgido de Barrayar. 
—Es que la historia es conmovedora —respondió ella—. La joven toma un bebedizo…
—Sophie, tienes un antifranc a 525 km de tu posición, a las 3 —dijo Takeda—. Detectó tu voz. Estará ahí en menos de 30 segundos. 
Decidí en fracciones de segundo, aunque sabía el precio. Sophie era una de las muertes blancas. Una de nosotros. Salí de mi posición y se dispararon las alarmas. Intercepté al antifranc a menos de 200 metros y le disparé una ráfaga que le destrozó la cabeza. Era una criatura trinitaria de generación profunda. Antes de caer, su tercer espíritu me lanzó un enjambre de microhielos complejo que no logré esquivar. Mi avatar se congeló y fragmentó en miles de grietas plateadas. Antes de que estallara en trizas y polvillo estelar, escuché por vez última las voces unísonas de Plunkett y Harrison que hicieran la misma pregunta: 
—Simo, ¿dónde vives? 
Abrí los ojos. Las manos me temblaban. Me dio por contar: 140 juegos de nivel Óptimo, 2314 misiones exitosas, 24 fugas, 1050 blancos abatidos entre los que se encontraban 21 jugadores élite… Las hazañas de las muertes blancas. La reputación de las muertes blancas. Todo desaparecido por salvar a esa espía parlanchina. 
El Hologens advirtió un visitante ante la puerta. “Entrega personal”. No había recibido una entrega personal desde que Hermanita y Mascota me visitaran 22 años atrás y 322 años lúdicos. Se mudaban de Distrito. A saber dónde. 
Pensé unos segundos, pues todavía me temblaban las manos. El visitante desbloqueó la entrada. 
—Visión. Armas —ordené. 
—Visión bloqueada por el intruso —respondió el Hologens—. Armas decomisadas por el Consejo. 
Un ser antropomorfo y encapuchado penetró en mi cápsula. No era un holo sino un cuerpo real. Aquello constituía un delito de Agresión escarlata, penado con los artículos más siniestros del códice Ultratumba. 
—Quien seas, ¿cómo llegaste aquí? —pregunté, dispuesto en todo momento a aprender sobre las tácticas enemigas. 
—Soy El “Diamantes” —Sophie descubrió su rostro. Me sonrió y abrió sus brazos—. No necesitas ninguna estrategia para esto.
