Well versed in all of the history and science of every major empire in his time period, he was a true omnidisciplinary expert in the varied and complex field of temporal mechanics. With the fall of most of Western society, he had been driven to explore the secrets lost to the decay of a system that had turned to self-destruction. It was a long and tiresome journey, with many close calls and a few deaths to test the old man's stamina. The office of the Emperor stood in the middle of a huge citadel in the dank, dark bowels of the city. Holographic screens, flashing images of figures, astrological diagrams, and etchings of forces from places unknown permanently painted the office in garish, shifting colors. Drawing closer, Dovid could read the slight movements of the Emperor's lips as he held a meeting with someone in another dimly lit office. He could hear the occasional muffled grunt and creak of chairs that echoed through the ages of the massive institution. Dovid leaned into the door, his eyes glinting with the excitement of this great discovery and possibility. He stepped back and pushed the door lightly, but it did not open. He pushed against the door harder but it still refused to open. The panel had no power. The door was locked from the inside. "This is Dovid, royal of the Enakar Empire." He spoke loudly into the intercom. "Go ahead, Dovid, you are being heard. I'll be out momentarily." Dovid did not bother to continue his call to the Emperor. He tried to pick the lock on the door again. Nothing happened. He tried to push the bottom of the door into the lock, but it was too thick for him to do so. He scraped his fingernails against the edge of the door and pushed it farther into the lock. It did not budge. "Dammit. If only I had always been this good at picking these kinds of locks." He looked up and down the hall, looking for help. There was still a chance that someone had followed him to the office. However, as he scanned the hallway floor, he saw a small patch of concrete on the floor with no dust on it. This was obviously where they looked for their secrets. If they had seen the door, they would have found it. He hurried across the hallway, moving as rapidly as his old legs would allow. He started toward the door, knowing that if he moved slowly, the others would catch up to him and he might be in trouble. They should have had guards by now. Dovid rolled over a desk knocking an ancient holographic console to the ground while trying to move. He bent over to pick it up and heard a voice behind him. "Stop, intruder," said the voice. Dovid turned to see the soldier pointing his weapon at him. Dovid backed away as slowly as he could, hoping that the man would not shoot him. "Put your hands up now, or you will be fired on." Dovid raised his hands slowly, and the soldier pressed himself against the wall, stepping toward Dovid. He placed his hand on Dovid's shoulder and pulled him back toward the door. "Who are you? Why are you here?" he demanded. "Dovid, master of the Enakar Empire." "I don't think so," said the soldier. "I've never heard of a Dovid. I think you're lying. You're probably from the Kecerinian Empire, or the Jokeren Syndicate. That's where most of the intruders are from." "Ah, I suppose I am from one of those groups," smiled Dovid. The soldier did not seem to appreciate Dovid's humor. He grabbed him roughly and pressed a button on the wall, sending a voice message out to the rest of the guards.
