16 out of my 20 best votes for curating posts were manual. The 5 minute mark is not holy.
It's been several weeks into #newsteem now and I'm toying around a lot with different options for my Steempower.

I like a good return on investment on my SP but I also want to do things that help Steem.

#newsteem has given us plenty of options to do just that.

I have some Dleases going for some stable return. It's a great service for Steemians that want to have a little bit more SP but can't buy it straight up.

And it's not like they can abuse the lease *(like before)*, because of the DV system now. They will have to use it for something better.

But most interesting for me is the curation.

I've been manually and auto curating for almost 2 weeks now. Trying different things.

I have about 20 authors on my vote bot constantly *(that I switch around)* but it's not long enough sufficient to blast though my voting power.

As far as I know, there are no longer services that sell your vote around 99% and I don't want to be 100% because that would just be silly. Having some voting power trickle to these authors keeps that in check.

When I go to bed around the 91%-93% levels I'm usually alright the next day. 

This morning, for instance, I woke up with 99% voting power. Perfect.

Thanks to the wonderful tool [Steemworld](https://steemworld.org) I can keep a close eye on how my curation efforts are going.

It also is now supported by the SPS! Congrats @steemchiller!

Using the Steemworld website I noticed something interesting.

When it comes to the efficiency of votes. Manual curation kicks the panties out of my auto votes on the top levels.

In the top 20, only 4 votes were auto-cast.

Also, notice that some of these manual votes (7 out of 16) were cast after the '5-minute curation mark'. 

Which makes me happy because I initially thought most votes after that mark would be pointless for curation rewards.

Good.

After curation manually for two weeks, I'm getting better at it and I hope to increase my efficiency even more.

It's currently around 60% on average.

Wow, that is pretty impressive.  I don't have the time to manually curate as much as I would like to so I have to rely on Auto voting.  It is just a fact of life right now :P  This is definitely some good info to keep in mind though.

Auto votes being not so profitable is great news, because it incentivizes manual curation; when a user gets established and starts to attract auto votes, the auto voters are undermining each others' curation rewards when there's enough of them. So if people want to get more curation rewards, they need to start looking manually for good posts from yet established users. This is great for new quality content creators, because there's a continuous hunt for the "Tier 2" content.

At first, I could offset it by changing my vote timer from 5 to 4 to 3 minutes. But it's a race to the bottom now. Especially when more and more ppl are entering the game. Switching authors helps. But Manual is best I think.

It's entirely possible to do that if you unearth a particularly brilliant post by an unknown author. I vaguely recall someone posting about a search tool that curation guilds use to look for posts that fit certain criteria. Can you or can someone else give a pointer to it?

Tbh. I wish I had the balls to go all-in. But it's just not me.

I'm happy with what I have been able to acquire in my own way so far.

ps. If ppl think curating today is 'cute' for pennies Steem. Just wait until the price turns around and the difference between good curation vs bad curations are hundreds of dollars. Then the real battle starts.
