Who picked the name HIVE ?
Why would you pick such a name ?

Not only is there an internationally listed stock (ISIN: CA43366H1001) **Hive Blockchain Technologies** but it was and still is just an incredibly overused buzzword.

# Branding = Fail

Good luck finding HIVE tools:

https://www.google.com/search?q=hive+blockchain+tools

To top it all off, it isn't even on github like all other serious blockchain projects, going all the way back to bitcoin - Instead it is hosted on @blocktrades own domain.

That's ridiculous.

*Steem* was a terrible name, but I couldn't think of a worse name than *HIVE*.

**Even on coingecko, I get wrong autosuggestions when looking for HBD**

It's embarassing.
If someone tried to sabotage the whole project from within, they probably wouldn't even dare to suggest such an unfortunate name.

I can't express my frustration ...

I guess on the plus side - anyone who builds anything on it doesn't have to use the name!

'Hive Fest' just sounds wrong.

I've thought that from the start. We needed something you can Google and actually find. There's also a lack of branding across the dapps. With some it's not obvious they use Hive.

Are we actually dependent on the name? Could we start using something else?

Since HIVE is the name of the cryptocurrency and blockchain, people who use the platform are dependent on the name.

It is not difficult to start a new blockchain. It is largely a matter of cut at paste. Apparently a good portion of the TRON code based was copied from other platforms.

My guess is that the bad branding decision will create a highly fractured environment. I would not be surprised to see parts of HIVE slumphing off into their own spaces.

d.tube launched with a dependency on STEEM. They now hive the Avalon blockchain and are likely to grow more independent through the years.

LEO started as an alternative interface for STEEM and switched to HIVE. As they form alliances with other blockchains, their reliance on HIVE will probably dwindle. They were already burnt once with Sun's hostile take over of STEEM. Sane developers avoid dependencies and should be prepared for trouble on HIVE.

The fracturing is natural. The bad branding of HIVE is likely to accelerate the fracturing.

Anyway, your question was:

> Are we actually dependent on the name? Could we start using something else?

The answer is that individual blockchains are dependent on a name and symbol. The blockchain environment itself is likely to evolve into a highly fractured space; so we are doomed to have highly fractured crypto portfolios.

Names can be changed and it has happened with other blockchains (Grantcoin became Manna). I would think the witnesses could actually change it fairly easily if they could come to an agreement. Whether groups use this blockchain depends on the community and the technical merits, not the name, If it is to happen then it should be before it gets much bigger.

STEEM was a fairly good brand name. It is a misspelling of water in a gaseous state. The brand can be used as both a noun and verb.

The name set up STEEM Engine to be a major player in smart contract and alt coin spaces.

HIVE is a complete branding fail that has cost the community dearly. The term is so overused that it is impossible for the platform to gain a foothold in the search engines.

A large number of network admins called their data center the HIVE. There has been a large number of networking products that used derivation of the term hive in the name. Most of these products failed.

In political circles: the term is usually associated with collectivist thought which harms the sites reputation as a platform for independent discourse.

The term "Hive-Minded" implies group think as opposed to critical thinking. We already have enough group think on this planet.

To make the brand an even worse fail: the platform was using the term "hive" in conjunction with the communities in hive. A community on SteemIt/HIVE is also called "A Hive"

So, not only does the brand fail in the world at large. It fails internally since it conflicts with a feature.

Fortunately some of the alternative interfaces such as LEO, Peakd, ecency, stemgeeks have better names.
