Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Slash, Jerry Cantrell, Keith Richards, George Harrison, Elvis Presley; and even Muddy Waters, were and still are (not all of them are dead) some of the best representatives of rock and roll within their instrument, which is none other than the electric guitar. They are also all men, and also belonged partially or totally to a rock band, in one of its genres. They all brought sounds and improved rock. Each with their contributions and with the mystique and talent they possess (or used to possess). However, there is one curiosity among all these heroes of the best music made in the last 80 years, none of them would have been anything without a woman. And no, I'm not referring to their mothers, but to: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the mother of rock and roll as we know it.

You see, when we think of rock and roll, usually the first thing that comes to mind is a distorted, harmonic sound with a time signature that can't be resisted. In other words, it is something so powerful and yet so magical that it is simply one of the many revolutions in music during the 20th century. Having said that, who could have imagined that this sound, this way of playing the guitar (which we all know and associate with rock music nowadays) would be the work of a black woman, of the Christian religion; a singer-songwriter of gospel music that until not so long ago nobody knew about? And yes, history, like life itself, is not without injustice; and this chapter (that of Rosetta Tharpe) is just the tip of a much deeper iceberg with ramifications that to this day raise some eyebrows...

Now, where do I get the information that Sister Rosetta Tharpe is the (undisputed and undeniable) creator of the modern rock and roll sound? Well, that answer is quite simple: from the history of music itself. For those of you who don't know my musical inclinations, I have always considered myself an irreparable music lover. Someone who finds no meaning in life if there is no music to accompany the feelings and emotions I may have. Having said that, one day when I was researching the origins of rock and roll, I realised that something so important for billions of people all over the planet, that generates a multi-million dollar industry and has even created its own Hall of Fame, is in reality something so unknown.

>

Even official sources, i.e. music historians, social anthropologists and writers, disagree. Some attribute the creation of rock and roll's characteristic notes, melody and rhythm to blacks from southern Mississippi; others place it closer to pop, including and praising Elvis Presley's influence in separating "the grass from the chaff", so to speak (i.e. who turned it into a mass product); and then there are those who follow the more unanimous mainstream where Chuck Berry is the cornerstone of this narrative. On the other hand, many connoisseurs, specialist journalists and even the US Baptist movement itself, in conjunction with the Gibson company, attest that none of what has been written corresponds to the truth; for it was Rosetta Tharpe who inspired and pioneered a sound that simply did not exist before.

>

In this sense, this is where history seems to be rewritten. For Ms. Tharpe, yes, she was quite well known in her day (40's, 50's and early 60's) throughout the Southern United States and even made promotional tours to Europe. He gave majestic concerts that left everyone speechless, as they had never heard a guitar sound the way Tharpe made it sound. And there are some very famous people who can attest to this, such as Keith Richards, Roger Waters and Eric Clapton, famous and extremely important figures in the history of music in general, not to mention rock and blues, respectively.

They have always declared their greatest admiration and fanaticism for Sister Rosetta Tharpe, even admitting that the idea of making music (in this case rock and roll) came to them through the direct influence of this exceptionally talented African-American woman. The really interesting part comes next; and that's why we never heard of her? Because let's be honest, it's not like I have a scoop to bring you. Clearly, I didn't know anything about this woman myself, and even then, I was quite sceptical at first. It was only when I checked the information I had against the official records and the chronicles that recorded the rock and roll authors that I realised that no one like Miss Tharpe had done anything like her in the 1940s. And yes, you are reading me right, we are talking about almost 15 years before what is normal and creed, for everybody!

>

A woman, a style, a performance. These are the words I would best use to describe the legacy of a music legend such as this wonderful woman. But let's get back to why is she not on the record, nor did she get the recognition she clearly deserves? If you ask me, my conclusion would be: commercial interests of the time, racial segregation and above all, censorship. This topic in itself could be another post, but to keep it short, I think it's because of how the music industry was run almost 100 years ago. Simply put, "soft music" and "black music" didn't mix. They were not played on the same radios, nor did they have the same record labels. Therefore, the music charts were also segregated, and different.

>

To this, we must add the opposition of the Church, who instead of taking advantage of the enormous opportunity they had to spread Gospel music to the whole world and thus make their religious beliefs more noble and digestible, acted as fundamentalists and opposed Sister Rosetta Tharpe. They went so far as to censor her on the radio, create rumours about her sexual orientation, and allied themselves to damage her image as an artist in the society of the time. However, genius can be attacked but never destroyed, and the legacy of this legend still continues. Thanks to life, it is becoming more and more common to hear about her music, her performances and the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame itself has even credited her within its immortal walls.

However, this is just a reminder of what we think we know as history, and once again reality kicks us in the face and we see that what we thought we knew is not as true as it used to be. To the point, that almost 80 years after the creation of one of the most solid, incredible and absolutely massive genres in the history of music, we still have to debate on who was the creator of this sound. Perhaps, this serves as a lesson for us not to leave behind those figures who really changed the world, but who ironically seem to go unnoticed. While we remember those who don't deserve it as much (at least, not like Rosetta Tharpe). Finally, I'll leave a couple of videos of what this woman could do, you be the judge...

>

Thanks, mate! I appreciate your kind words. But all the good things goes to Ms. Rosetta Tharpe, an absolute genius. Without this wonderful woman, there's no rock and roll. And for that, the whole world should be graceful to her. She's unique and unforgettable.
