Rainproofing the cabin after removing the trees
The day before yesterday, we split a large amount of wood on the property and stored a good portion of it. There will still be some left to split when I return, but I don’t mind. As I mentioned [in my report yesterday](https://peakd.com/hive-193212/@genesisledger/splitting-logs-and-clearing-the-mind-enfr-d6u) , it's an activity I really enjoy.

However, one urgent problem needed to be addressed before leaving. Since we cut down the trees that protected the cabin from bad weather, water has been seeping in. This is when you realize that the roof is no longer in its prime and deserves our attention.

Fixing a leak is always complicated. When you see the water flowing and think you’ve found the source, you’re always far from the truth. I know there's still one at the wood stove chimney. And that bothers me particularly because I thought I had solved it. Yet, water continues to seep in whenever it rains a little too much.

A few weeks ago, I installed a sort of dam on the roof slope to redirect water to the sides of the chimney. But it seems that wasn’t enough.

Water continues to seep in when it rains a little too much.

So, we removed my pool cement to identify the source of the problem. It was already in very poor condition, barely holding together. Water could pass through it entirely. The advantage is that it was surprisingly easy to remove. The fact that the sheet metal is metal and that the concrete used might not have been suitable probably played a role.

We also removed the black cover at the base of the chimney, but I forgot to take a photo of this step. Underneath, there is a rubber collar that perfectly fits the corrugations of the metal roof. Theoretically, there shouldn’t be a problem at that level.

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmbBDfCntkFfT5gj3p9M7DhgNLVqo46HentGAeYyh8KEcw/482574987_1197654741867866_3440584183298211328_n.jpg

However, it seems that the leak comes from the junction between two metal sheets. As seen in the photo, we applied a thick outdoor sealant, both on top and underneath the sheet metal.

If the leak was indeed coming from there, the problem should be solved. Otherwise, further investigation will be needed. Fortunately, my aunt lives right next door, so she can check from time to time. In the meantime, I’ve placed a pot to collect any water that might seep in around the stove.

In case of heavy rain, it's not enough, but it's better than nothing.

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmVadRfTvc8QdRcMT2NW3M4NS4ovWa8q4rVh32fXKDLTij/481759140_943813064402117_316198927152779665_n.jpg

By the way, my aunt thought the entire roof was leaking. But upon closer inspection, we rather believe it’s due to strong condensation. The metal sheet roof, combined with the ambient humidity of the area, which is a wet zone, and insufficient ventilation, creates a condensation effect. When the sun heats the metal, the moisture inside evaporates, then condenses on the roof before trickling down the walls.

I am convinced that this is the cause of the problem. As a precaution, I still swept the roof since it was covered in small piles of accumulated pine needles. Water tended to stagnate there, especially since the roof’s slope is insufficient to ensure proper drainage.

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmaotS9vDzAosHB6cSEffKj54KDMGMf15VoxtLMCLWjMvS/481593229_1352012312780203_4084426904390766568_n.jpg

The roof is now much cleaner. I think some of the metal sheet fastenings will still need to be replaced as they are beginning to wear out. I’ll see if I can find some at a good price without compromising quality.

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmf1L5yj4zEbdFR8BRfWmP2CP59a8D5ioATRUjKrm72pEG/482958250_1341171803574333_942219388883174079_n.jpg

Cutting down the trees around the cabin has caused a few issues, but it has also brought significant benefits. The interior is much less humid now. Of course, at night, the cabin still absorbs external humidity, which remains high in this wet zone (around 80 to 90%). But during the day, we drop to 50%, which is ideal, as a dwelling should be kept between 40 and 60% humidity to avoid air that is too dry or too humid.

To solve the nighttime problem, we would need to insulate the cabin, create good ventilation, and limit the number of people inside. Whether you are in a 90m² house with a 3m ceiling or in a 20m² cabin with a 1.85m ceiling, we still generate the same amount of water vapor.

Another advantage: we gain more sunlight for the solar panel, which helps strengthen our energy autonomy. The pond also benefits from this clearing: it is no longer suffocated by overly dense vegetation. It remains abundant, but the ecosystem seems more balanced, and it shows.

## Version Française

---

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmXGUui9SxdAaPKv97mQsWDnvyYpvYU5DsywzWjRUdYyie/po%C3%AAl%C3%A9e%20de%20pdt%20et%20chorizo%202.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQma1bBTkEQ5k6u5b7K8Rdok5PcQtQVSCHxkpqroUExfweg/481382449_1265465834516253_4402072043428125811_n.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmf3HwPDKqQhCMtq3UaA9MP4YVEDFKgLXaeUDoh8q9zwqG/476422430_586791947852448_564961362157643894_n.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmdRfbUdKFZc4bDJ6193U1kT2fyEdnKBYbJEJ5Dz7QYeEB/482520043_3923479611266244_7469384822936125788_n.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmbBDfCntkFfT5gj3p9M7DhgNLVqo46HentGAeYyh8KEcw/482574987_1197654741867866_3440584183298211328_n.jpg

  https://img.inleo.io/DQmVadRfTvc8QdRcMT2NW3M4NS4ovWa8q4rVh32fXKDLTij/481759140_943813064402117_316198927152779665_n.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmaotS9vDzAosHB6cSEffKj54KDMGMf15VoxtLMCLWjMvS/481593229_1352012312780203_4084426904390766568_n.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmPiHdnPjwUzKRg5BXq6SRkGDjzpp1baj4ayrvTtmYMaaG/478385454_1147657046850524_4146823846103227833_n.jpg

 https://img.inleo.io/DQmf1L5yj4zEbdFR8BRfWmP2CP59a8D5ioATRUjKrm72pEG/482958250_1341171803574333_942219388883174079_n.jpg
