### Forests: The Importance

Many people only see forests as vegetation, and perhaps, habitat for wild animals. In actual fact, they are complex systems that consist of diverse plant and animal species and various physical and chemical processes that interact with each other. The components and interactions make forests play vital roles in the functioning of our ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services - so vital are these functions and services that the existence of man becomes threatened without them.

Forests act as carbon sinks by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and storing it in their biomass and soil. This helps to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Even though forests also emit carbon dioxide through respiration, most forests are net absorbers of this greenhouse gas and this is one of the reasons deforestation is seen as a driver of climate change.

During carbon sequestration, oxygen is produced. In other words, forests are responsible for producing a significant amount of oxygen that we breathe. Through photosynthesis, trees and other plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, which is essential for the survival of all living organisms. I mean, without the producers forming the base of every food web, the food web simply cannot exist.

Forests are also known to play a crucial role in regulating the water cycle by absorbing, storing, and releasing water. Trees and plants absorb water through their roots, and release it through transpiration, which helps to regulate the moisture levels in the atmosphere.

Another, and perhaps one of the popularly known functions of forests is that they are home to a vast array of plant and animal species, many of which are unique to forest ecosystems. This biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecosystem health and resilience and providing important ecosystem services such as pollination, food production, watershed protection, and pest control.

Forests also help to prevent soil erosion by providing a layer of vegetation that protects the soil from the impact of rain and wind. The roots of trees and plants help to hold the soil in place, preventing it from being washed away. Most environments that are plagued by gully erosion are usually devoid of adequate vegetation.

Last but not least, forests play an important role in regulating local and regional climate patterns by absorbing and releasing moisture, and by influencing the amount of solar radiation that reaches the ground.

### What fire does to forests
[Forest fire](https://www.britannica.com/science/forest-fire) has become a popular occurrence in our world. Either anthropogenic or natural, millions of acres of forests are lost annually to forest fires and when this happens, a lot of things change. These changes directly or indirectly affect the ecosystem functions and services rendered by forests.

In the short term, forest fires have been shown to have devastating impacts on wildlife and plant populations. Animals are either killed or displaced by the fire, while fire-intolerant plants end up being destroyed, reducing the overall productivity of the forest ecosystem. In addition, the immediate aftermath of fire often leads to soil erosion and sedimentation, with the aquatic ecosystems suffering the consequences at large.

In the long term, forest fires have been shown to have significant impacts on the landscape and the environment. The loss of vegetation leads to changes in soil composition and nutrient cycling, affecting plant and animal populations in the area. Forest fires also contribute to climate change by releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Additionally, the smoke from forest fires has the potential to cause respiratory problems for people living in nearby communities, and can even affect air quality in distant cities.

### Post-fire vegetation dynamics
Have you ever wondered what happens to the vegetation of a forest after an episode of a forest fire? The normal thing is that secondary succession resumes in the absence of further disturbance. However, it is highly unlikely that the forest will return to its old self when it reaches climax, depending on the severity of the fire, the topography of the landscape, and the species composition of the pre-fire vegetation.

A forest that is dominated by fire-tolerant species may be somewhat resilient to a significant change in vegetation. In other words, there may not be a major difference between the old and post-fire vegetation. The same cannot be said for a forest dominated by fire-sensitive species though, as moderate to high-intensity fire kills off the majority of them along with their propagules in the soil seed bank.

[Natural selection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_selection) favors the fire-resistant species and a major change in the vegetation post-fire is likely the resulting scenario. The heat, smoke, or ashes resulting from fire stimulates (singly or in synergy) the germination of the dormant seed bank components by breaking their dormancy.

A major shift in the species composition and dynamics of forest vegetation will significantly impact the ecosystem functions and services.

### Final thoughts
The services that forests offer mankind are vital and are usually impacted both in the short and long terms when fire gulps forests. Returning a fire-sensitive forest to a semblance of its old self after a severe fire would be an arduous task.

Do you think it would be a worthwhile effort to return disturbed forests to their old self or mankind should rather find ways to adjust in order to return to equilibrium with the forests?

Your opinions are welcomed in the comment section.

Forests are important to climate changes seen across the globe and these fires are causing more hard than we could have anticipated, endangered species are being lost and more are becoming endangered due to these happenings, our atmosphere gets populated to a large extent when these happen and a good source of oxygen is lost.

I believe that it is high time that environmental protection agencies made this their number one priority and sought to find permanent solutions to these happenings, it would do us and the entire world better, it was a great read and quite pleasurable indeed, thanks for sharing.

The problem is the capitalist government. They pretend they are tackling climate change while using backdoors to emit millions of carbon. Take for example, the recent energy crises in Europe where many governments resort to using coal. I mean, we are in the 21st century where we know what coal burning does to our climate. But it is what it is.

Forests are significant to the ecosystem, it is bad that we have them destroyed without taking steps to re-plant, there should be an implemented policy to correct this dangerous wrong.

I doubt the capitalist system will do anything about climate change or deforestation because it doesn't suit their beliefs.
