# <center><b>Magazine</b>    - <i>Goldfinger</i></center>


## I've never shared a song, then a cover
<div class="pull-right">https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/grapthar/Fb733Nsc-magazine-howard-devoto-live-at-rafters-manchester-photo-by-kevin-cummins-1978.jpg<center><b>Magazine live in 1978</b></center></div><div class="text-justify">version the next day here before, but I was listening to <b>Magazine</b> in the car today, and figured it would be fun to go over the differences in the two.  <b>Magazine</b was formed by Howard Devoto in 1977 after he left the <b>Buzzcocks</b>, who wanted to try new things and break away from the cliches of rock music.  The <b>Buzzcocks</b> had some awesome, weird stuff going on, but also retained a lot of elements of older rock and roll.  <b>Magazine</b> pushes this further, and helped to usher in what would become known as post-punk, which took the energy and originality in punk, but musically went in much more progressive directions, which varied wildly between bands.  <b>Magazine</b> released 3 full length albums before their break-up in 1981, though in 2011 they did reunite and release another album, though I haven't heard their new music personally.</div>

## I was listening to the band's 1976 album <i>Real Life</i> in the
<div class="pull-left">https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/grapthar/fNMs1ZT5-Magazine_-_Real_Life.jpg<center><b>Magazine, <i>Real Life</i> (1978, Virgin Records)</b></center></div><div class="text-justify">car today via Spotify, which has the 2007 reissued version which has 4 additional tracks, including the original version of <i>'Shot by Both Sides'</i> and this, a cover of the Bond theme.  As I mentioned yesterday in my post about the original song, there are some really cool things that happen, which are still present in the cover, though their arrangement does have some differences. The chords for the intro are played sort of double time;  however, the verse spaces out the vocals quite a bit more than the original, though it doesn't 'feel' slower, as there is a lot happening rhythmically in those gaps.  There is a great little riff over the D#7 chord at the end of the Verse, which gives it a very different feeling than the original.  The 'Bond' riff (with the 5th, up a half step, and again, then back down) isn't really present, with the guitars playing a new, but equally cool, riff.  The final real difference is in the break, where after playing in D#maj to Bmin6, instead of moving to the F#6 and F#dim, they play a little descending minor chord thing, which is really cool, and still works.</div>
