## Well, it's been long enough since

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/grapthar/L9KGclTS-simonandgarfunkle-770.jpg
The duo, mid '60s

the last Simon & Garfunkel tune, so I think we're overdue! Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon were childhood friends, coming together in the mid/late '50s under the name 'Tom & Jerry', and began writing and performing music. They found some minor success, mimicking their idols The Everly Brothers, until the early '60s when folk music became much more popular. They dropped the stage monikers, and were eventually signed as Simon & Garfunkel. Over the course of the '60s, their sound grew and evolved quite a bit; though they always maintained some elements from the folk music scene, the songs became much more layered, and the songwriting itself more complex as Paul Simon learned and incorporated more ideas into their music. The duo split in the early '70s, though they came together to work on each other's solo albums at times, and reunited for a few shows/tours in later years.

## While I am definitely a massive fan of the duo's early work,

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/grapthar/7vGxSnRh-094e72fce5f0535c317dd1a0f090cd07.1000x1000x1.jpg
Simon & Garfunkel, Bookends (1968, Columbia Records)

I've found that I am much more drawn to their later albums recently, as the songwriting is so much more interesting, and the production became much detailed as technology evolved. This song is the second track on the group's 1968 album Bookends. It is a loose concept album, following someone from birth until death. These two concepts are the 'bookends' to life. This album is considered to be a vital part of the duo's career, as it really cemented their place amongst the greats of the time period, and garnered them much more attention internationally. The song is really interesting just in it's form; the use of the Moog in it provides some big crescendos, and the rhythm in the Chorus is in 4, but sort of lags behind the beat, which creates an interesting vibe. At the time, synthesizers were pretty novel, and the sound it provided was something that many people had never heard before. Unfortunately, listening with modern ears, it's hard to really understand what that must have been like to hear something so new without any of the history we all now have with electronic instruments.
