A Much Deeper Look into Duplicate Comments on HIVE
This work is a follow up to recently published investigations:

- [Text analytics reveal thirty two percent of comments are not unique and add no value to discussion](https://peakd.com/hive-133987/@holoz0r/text-analytics-reveal-thirty-two-percent-of-comments-on-hive-are-not-unique-and-at-least-ten-percent-add-no-value-to-discussion)
- [Further analytics regarding comments on HIVE](https://peakd.com/hive-133987/@holoz0r/further-analytics-regarding-comments-on-hive)

This post examines data from January 2025 through to the conclusion of April 2025, to enable broader analysis of the type of comments published on the platform.

The data set examined in this post has 1,758,556 rows. This covers 118 days of full data, representing an average of 14,903 comments a day.

Through this post, I will focus on a few interesting topics, as I refine my investigations into a deeper analysis leading down to the comment quality.

Before we look at comment quality, I want to revisit the comment "uniqueness" path.

Comment Uniqueness / Duplicates

**TLDR: 27.1% (476,937) of comments are not unique.**

Of the rows examined, 1,281,619 contain unique comments, which means that we are left with 476,937 comments which are repeated. Some are repeated by the same user, while others are comments left by different users, that contain the same comments.

There are 44,876 rows of duplicate comments after they are grouped into the format:

| Comment Text | Frequency | Unique Authors | Percentage | Word Count |

**What causes not unique comments?**

Examination of the duplicate rows reveals the following (and a lot of this is not new information) Note that all percentages expressed here are the percentage of the non unique comments, not the total percentage of comments on the chain for the period:

**Notable Curation Projects leaving duplicate comments**

- Curation Projects Leaving a Comment with the "Felt" Sentiment token making up some 16.4% (7401) of the period's non unique comments
- Splinterboost upvoting posts about Splinterlands and leaving a comment, 13.4% (6039) of duplicate comments for a 12% upvote, (3.2%, 1478 comments) for 5% upvotes and (3%, 1327 comments) for 15% upvotes. There's probably more. By my count, this makes **splinterboost** the most prolific in publishing duplicate comments to hive.
- Pandex (2333 comments, by 1 user, for 5.19%)

**Bot Calls for Tokens**

Bot Calls, including calls

bbh (6651 comments, by 1223 users) 14.82%
lolz (5252 comments by 129 users) 11.7%
hiqvote (3145 comments by 88 users) 7%
(beer 2556 comments by 73 users) 5.69% (nice?)
lady (1939 comments by 2 users) 4.32%
pizza (1855 comments by 102 users) 4.13%
hbit (1418 comments by 91 users) 3.16%

And these are only the top 25 duplicate comments being examined! 22,816 comments are ONLY calls to these bots, without any further remark.

**Common Phrases**

Humans say the same thing to humans.

The fifth most repeated, non-unique comment is "thank you", with it being made 5,027 times by 919 users, for a total of 11% of the duplicate comments. Variations such as "thanks" appear 2970 times, by 700 users, for 6.6%, then we get "thank you!" 2563 times by 523 enthusiastic users. We say thank you a lot, here's some examples, and their incidence:

| Comment | Frequency | Number of Users | % Non Unique | Word Count |

There are probably more variations that my regex didn't catch, but the totals here are 15,084 comments, by 3,341 users.

**Now I'm interested in commonly appearing terms in the comments:**

First, let's start with some words:

The next part of my study, which I'll do at some point in the future, will focus on "Ranking" user comments in terms of complexity. This will take into account length, word count, sentence counts, and comment depth. I will come up with some sort of scoring algo, and see who comes out on the top.

As that will be based on a "user" dimension, we'll finally find out who swore the most in the study period ;)

This is exactly why I do not often say anything , I only do so if I feel I can add value. The measurement of how HIVE grants reputation really needs a hard think and adjustment IMO.

Is that just because people end up upvoting comments that say things like "yeah", "yep", "great post", "thank you" , etc?

I feel as though a single vote on the post, without a comment, should also be noticed by an author as opposed to the whole chain of

"Wonderful post"
Vote
"Thank you"
Vote
"You're welcome"
Vote
"Anytime"
Vote
"Uselss bot call"

Vote

... Maybe if i want to get more sophisticated with my analytics, I can look at a combination of the users with the longest reply depth on comments, the average word count, and if its lower than say... 5 words, then I'll put them on some sort of naughty list of not being able to communicate their thoughts in any meaningful way.

You're definitely not on that list, as far as I know :P

Thank you appreciate that I am not , wasn't even thinking in regards to list but you are right. Perhaps there should be one. It just shows to me people are looking and pretending to participate but not really reading or thinking about what you are trying to say or share. I do get frustrated like you with low real interaction rates here on the interwebs.

@jacobtothe ·
I got one of those spammy FELT comments. It looks like part of the Aquarius Academy spam project. The titular account tends to comment on many, many posts long past payout with vaguely inspirational quotes which appear to be generated from a generic list, since they often repeat. Bots are a plague and should be downvoted on sight IMHO, with exceptions for real established community curation projects.

I feel missed out, I've never had one of those comments. And yes, you're right, I saw that account name high up on the list of total comments. Just because they're not duplicate comments, doesn't mean that they're adding value to the discussion on chain. :)

I do agree about bots, I appreciate having my work curated or voted by a project, and often, for most hive users, a comment will be the only way they'll know that happened, or the inevitable "mention" in the round up post as to what each curator did on any given period.

I feel like those votes are already recorded on chain, so a comment that is juts "Thanks for posting, upvote from x for great content" is a bit redundant. I get excited that there's a comment on my post, then sad that it isn't something that can extend the dialogue about my work.

Unless of course, it brings other people to the work via that curation post, I guess.

Nice to see the further data and analysis of comments. Nothing seems that surprising to me, it is about what I'd expect on Hive, and probably similar to other social media as well. YouTube is the most referenced other social media which makes sense as it is the second most popular website after google. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-visited_websites

The bot calls ranking seems about right. I use most of those myself, and bbh probably gives the most value, but I haven't checked lately to see if that is actually the case. I wonder where tokenfaucet !TF was on the list. At least with that one, it is only used and responded to on tokenfaucet posts so it isn't all over the place on lots of posts.

On the swearing, looks like the one about fecal matter is 8X the one on carnal knowledge. Maybe reflects the average frequency that people engage in either behavior. :)

Thanks for the data and analysis; looking forward to the next one!

My concern with the duplicate bot comments are that โ€ฆ it is the entire content of the comment - no other conversation for this percentage of โ€œengagementโ€ on the chain.

Transaction per second and volume looks good on a blockchain, but when thereโ€™s no โ€œvalueโ€ (semantically - as in, meaning) - especially for. a โ€œsocialโ€ chain like HIVE, that has the possibility of not looking good to people who want to use it for the stated purpose - to yโ€™know, be social :D

I generally agree, but I also think that when communicating with others, we use non-verbal social cues which Do confer meaning.

>scholars argue that nonverbal communication can convey more meaning than verbal communication

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonverbal_communication

I'm thinking some of the !somethings are like a thumbs up, a wink, or a smile, or even a hug. Maybe. Maybe not? :D

Maybe it takes more than words to be social.

With !TF it is saying, sure I'll take the free token you're giving out from your own wallet and not from the reward pool. And rather than clogging the blocks up with all that verbiage, that meaning is reduced to 3 characters. :)

Just some thoughts. I often write as I think. And that's what this reply is.

Have a great day! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

Very welcome, friend. I am glad such posts were not repeated TONS of times, I expected it to be more. Maybe I'll find useless rambling in the unique comments :)

I don't see too much swearing here, but it seems to happen. I'm actually surprised at how few comments I get with just one or two words. I do suspect that some people will use bots to generate more comments now. I don't vote up those with low effort.

Thereโ€™s room for โ€œexploitationโ€ in every system, but the definition of what that is differs to each and every person. Iโ€™m far too pragmatic to have my own opinions on such things, so I just hope that looking into the data helps me find out who is genuinely engaged in social activity.

The swearing is just a bit of fun and games :P Weโ€™re a pretty well behaved bunch, even with the volume of people and the intensity of discussion and disagreements that occur here from time to time.
