Hace poco mientras trataba de garabatear unas líneas, escuche de pronto en la lejanía un sonido que venía de los tiempos de mi infancia. Al principio dudé, pensé que podía ser alguna especie de ilusión auditiva. Pero el sonido se fue acercando, ganando intensidad, y entonces no tuve duda, estaba escuchando “una marchantica”. Mientras buscaba las llaves para abrir el portón el sonido pasó de largo, cuando al fin pude abrir, la calle estaba vacía. Aún con la duda en mente le pregunté a mi esposa, que también escribe en el mismo salón, si había escuchado el sonido de la marchantica. Me dijo que si había escuchado una especie de marcha pero que no sabía qué era la marchantica. En los tiempos de mi niñez había dos grandes cadenas productoras de helados, las dos todavía siguen activas. <center></center> Estas cadenas tenían grandes flotas de vendedores ambulantes, les proporcionaban un pequeño carrito refrigerado con el que podían rodar por las calles para vender los helados. Generalmente la compañía tenía unos centros de acopio donde guardaban los carritos, los vendedores los sacaban por la mañana y los entregaban en la tarde. También tenían grandes camiones que iban dejando los carritos en sitios estratégicos, donde seguramente los estudiosos de la compañía habrían establecido que las ventas serían buenas. La peculiaridad de estos carritos era que tenían un equipo de sonido, bastante potente para la época, en el que ponían una especia de marcha. Para la gente la melodía se había convertido en un símbolo, y cada vez que se escuchaba se sabía que el heladero estaba cerca. En Caracas a esos carritos de helados sonoros se les decía Marchántica. Con el correr del tiempo el mercado fue cambiando, aparecieron otros tipos de helados que aumentaron la competencia notablemente. Ya era más fácil comprar helados en bodegas y casas de familia. Quizá por eso dejaría de ser rentable para las grandes compañías mantener flotas de carritos con vendedores ambulantes. El caso es que “las marchanticas” fueron disminuyendo su presencia en las calles hasta desaparecer completamente. Por eso me llamó tanto la atención escuchar de nuevo el viejo sonido. <center></center> Una tarde mientras regresaba de mi caminata al fin pude saber de qué se trataba. El sonido llegó de pronto y pude ver de dónde venía, era una moto triciclo, con una pequeña cava atrás, dos carteles de helados a los lados, el conductor y otra persona encargada de entregar y cobrar los helados. Lo curioso del asunto es que en ese preciso momento iban pasando a mi lado dos muchachas. Una le comentó a la otra, qué sonido tan feo, que le recordaba alguna película de terror. El comentario en realidad me dejó pensando. No me explicaba como ese lindo sonido de mi infancia, asociado al gran placer de comer un helado, en los oídos de ellas representara algo terrorífico. Pero bueno, así son las cosas de las interpretaciones humanas. No sé por qué el joven vendedor ambulante de helados decidiría poner esa música en particular, porque es casi seguro que él haya crecido sin conocer las marchanticas, quizá algún familiar suyo le habló de ellas y lo buscó en internet. El caso es que aún en contra de la opinión de las muchachas, el sonido ha ido calando en el vecindario. Estimo que una de las presentaciones de helados que ha dado la talla y ha reemplazado rápidamente a las antiguas presentaciones, es la llamada “tetica”. La última vez que probé una, que por cierto era de galleta “maría” fue hace más de 15 años. Aquí en Canadá las “tinas” son una amplia variedad de sabores y texturas, son muy populares. A mi me encantas las de rompope.

También recuerdo esa imagen de los niños rodeando al heladero. En la salida de mi escuela siempre habían algunos heladeros esperando y los muchachos salían en desbandada a ver quien era el primero en comprar, el heladero se reía y no sabía a quien venderle primero.
