Captured By The Apache: Willie Is Freed!

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I'm in a new series about the Old West. We've been talking about a Texas boy who was kidnapped by an Apache raiding party in 1870. Actually it was him, Hermann, and his 8 year old brother Willie who were grabbed and taken away from their family farm.

In the last post the party was still making their way to their home encampment but of course the boys had no way of knowing how long that would take or what their fate would be once they arrived. 

The last post covered day 2 of their journey and days 3 and 4 were basically the same routine of riding long hours each day and stopping at water holes along the way.

## Our story continues

On the 5th day they were riding all together, 12 Apache and both boys with a herd of horses they had gathered along their route home. It was a typically boring day until one of the scouts came riding up, informing them that there was a group of Texas Rangers at the next water hole getting ready to make camp.

**(in a previous post I explained that many Texas Rangers killed any Indian on sight and they were heavily armed at all times)**

At this news the party let all the horses they had collected go free, then turned around and rode back the way they came and at full speed. One of the braves had been walking because of a hurt leg, riding hurt his leg, so he jumped up on the pony that Willie was on.

## Willie gains his freedom

When the pony was having trouble keeping up with the rest of them the brave dumped Willie off onto some bushes and kept riding! Hermann couldn't see what happened to Willie because he was at the front of the party, he only saw later that Willie was missing.

This distressed him **greatly** because he had no way of knowing if they killed Willie or just left him in the wilderness. Either way it was heart-breaking. How could a little kid with nothing survive in the wilderness alone?

This was the first time Hermann broke down and wept bitterly. He was crushed and in despair. He was grief stricken.

## Willie looked like a real mess!

Meanwhile, when Willie realized that he'd been left behind he didn't know what to do but to start walking. Luckily he came upon a road or trail and started walking along that. Pretty soon a white man came riding up but he left Willie there after talking for a little while.

I know that sounds crazy but Willie explained it later. He was quite a sight to see. First of all he was naked, and he was painted up like an Indian, and the braves had made a little hat for him out of the scalp from a calf's head which he was wearing. He looked ludicrous! lol. Poor little guy. 

So that man left him alone and rode on, too suspicious and not knowing what kind of situation it was. Plus Willie was timid and didn't say much.  So he was left alone again but another man came along pulling a wagon. He was a freight hauler going to Fort McKavett.

## Willie makes a friend

This time Willie took his cap off and threw it away and was more assertive and talkative and the man was happy to help him. He took Willie to a stage coach station and told him that he would be back in a few days and would take him home. The two got along great and became fast friends.

What's interesting is that a stage came along which was headed for Willie's home town of Fredericksburg and the driver wanted to take Willie home but Willie refused because he told the freighter that he would wait for him.

## A joyful reunion

Sure enough, in a couple of days the freighter showed up and took Willie home. It had been 9 days since his mother had seen him and the family was thrilled of course, plus they got news that Hermann was also alive and with the Apache tribe and was captive but safe.

Can you imagine what that reunion must have been like when the freighter pulled his wagon up to the family's cabin and Willie's mom came out? Wow, I'm sure the people at the stage coach station got him clothed so he probably didn't look too worse for the wear.  lol.

Hermann was grieving but after awhile **something told him** that Willie had escaped, although he had no idea how that was possible. But for him.. things were about to get much worse.

howdy today angiemitchell! I feel bad for poor Hermann at this point in the story and it gets worse for him from here on, at least for awhile.
As far as Spam, it's a canned pork product, God only knows what's in it but it's regarded as food that you buy only if you are poor and can't afford good meat!  It's very well known here in the United States but I don't know anyone who eats it.

Actually if I had to eat it that would be the way to do it, by BBQing it.

Well, if that’s Willies version of events, does that mean the person who documented the original story spoke with him and Hermann? If that’s the case then the two brothers end up reuniting again down the road. How much time passes until Willy and Hermann get together again?

Howdy sir dandays! well the story is a straight word for word account as Hermann told it in first person but as far as the other parts of your question I don't know if I should talk about it at this moment, I might want to keep some suspense.  I don't know if people would read the comments and see the spoiler information. lol. But on the first post I explained that he lived with the Indians for 9 years and then came back to the Whites.

Btw..spam is great in homemade fried rice. I guess I might still be a redneck though if I haven't tried spam on a grill but am totally open to trying it like that..lol! ;)

howdy today deerjay! Hermann has a long way to go and it get brutal for him before it gets better but at least he lives to tell about it. I've never had smam in fried rice but that does sound good, great idea! 
You definitely need to try in on the BBQ, I haven't but I'd think that would be one of the best ways to eat it!

Thanks for including a short summary as to what happened on the previous post.  At least we have an idea about the next part of the story.

Oh my goodness, I am happy that Willie made it back home. God bless! Bu the his brother on the other hand is in tough training. I see now what they are trying to do and I understand that they had to be really though to survive those days. 
Nevertheless, kidnapping innocent kids is not the solution.

Howdy again Miss Lena! I know what you mean about the Indians but there were many tribes who 
were peaceful farmers like the Caddo, Pueblo, Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, and dozens of others. 

So probably you just have  a problem with the warrior tribes like Camanche and Apache?
I think there were more peace loving tribes than war tribes.

The only stories I've read about kidnapping were by the warrior tribes though, I don't know if the
peaceful tribes kidnapped white people. One reason I chose this story is because it has alot
of exciting things in it because of the nature of the Apache.

Being captured to be made into a farmer might be a pretty boring story. I would like either type
of story so I could get a glimpse into a culture which most white men have never seen but
most people like action. lol.

Oh yes you are right Janton, I actually read a lot about Hopi. They made  lots of prophesies, but you probably know that.  I should had been more clear about my choice of dislike. I did like Apache, but only based on those German movies I used to like to watch as a child.  And of course, I am not criticising your choice of topic; it is part of our history and you are doing great job writing about it.

Howdy today zirochka!  It was pure luck or the hand of Providence that he was able to be freed and then again to stumble onto a road instead of wandering in the wilderness for days and getting killed by Bobcats or wolves or rattlesnakes is also a miracle.

As far as the clothes...the Indians were traveling light with no supplies, they were out to steal horses, not kidnap kids. I think this was just an opportunity that they hadn't planned on. So they had no spare clothes with them but also it was part of breaking down the spirits of captives by keeping them naked. It was just one of the ways they would break them down.

Of the other accounts of anyone being captured in battle or kidnapped the Indians always stripped them naked and if they weren't in a hurry they would tie their hands to a rope and make them walk behind, being pulled by the horses.

Am I making sense?
