Honeydew / FILM REVIEW [ENG - ESP]
Most people who see this movie will stigmatize it as a bad movie.  But my tastes are strange and I was fascinated by the sickly atmosphere of this horror film.

Even fans of the genre may find the plot trite and despair at the way the director drags the story out.  It could have been a short film, but it has so many engrossing and exciting scenes that the whole movie was a delicious mouthful of honey for my lips. 

Very low budget production, set in deep America, with a few locations, a couple going on a trip, a family in a house I wouldn't go to for all the gold in the world, and an old woman whose face turns my stomach. 

From the beginning of the film you can tell that the director is influenced by great horror classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  I think the way the film is made, is for that purpose. A story a thousand times seen, but the filmmaker has put his author's stamp on it. Does it work for him?  With me he already has a new fan. It's the kind of cinema I like, the kind that most people despise and that only a few mentally deranged people like me enjoy.

Incluso a los fanáticos del género, le puede resultar trillado el argumento y desesperarse  por la forma en que el director alarga la historia. Esto pudo haber sido un cortometraje, pero tiene  una gran cantidad de escenas absorbentes, excitantes y perturbadoras  que todo el film ha sido una deliciosa bocanada de miel para mis labios. 

Producción de muy bajo presupuesto, ambientada en la América profunda, con unas pocas locaciones, una pareja que va de viaje, una  familia  en una  casa donde yo no entraría  ni por todo el   oro del mundo, y una anciana cuyo rostro me  perturbaba. 

Desde el comienzo  del film, notaremos que el director tiene influencia de grandes clásicos del terror como La Matanza de Texas.  Creo que la forma en que está hecho  el film, es con ese propósito. Una historia mil veces vista, pero el cineasta ha puesto su sello  de autor. ¿Le funciona?  Conmigo  ya tiene un nuevo fan. Es el tipo de cine que me encanta, el que la mayoría desprecia y solo unos pocos  desquiciados mentales como yo disfrutamos.

### What is the plot of Honeydew?

*Sam and Rylie are a couple on a road trip in Massachusetts. He is an aspiring actor practicing his lines for a casting call and she is a scientist studying a fungus that has affected the rural area they are headed to. Rylie is a vegan and Sam follows a strict food diet.  Their relationship doesn't seem to be going well.  Their car crashes and they have to pitch a tent for the night, but an old farmer named Eulis tells them that the land is his property and they must leave. The couple picks up everything and walks until they find a house. They ring the doorbell and are greeted by Karen, a strange old woman who is kind, but doesn't seem normal. With her lives her son Gunni, an obese man with bandages on his face who seems to suffer from some kind of retardation and epileptic seizures, all he does is eat and watch old cartoons on TV. While waiting for help to fix their car, they must spend the night there. What really happens? Why doesn't the couple leave the house immediately? What is that old woman with the disturbing face hiding? What will be the fate of Sam and Rylie?*

Rylie es vegana y   Sam esta  siguiendo una estricta dieta alimenticia.  La relación entre ambos parece no estar pasando un buen momento.  El coche se accidenta y  tienen que armar una carpa para pasar la noche, pero  un  viejo granjero llamado Eulis les dice que las tierras son de  su propiedad y deben irse. La pareja   recogen todo  y caminan hasta encontrar una casa, donde son atendidos  por Karen, una extraña anciana  que  se muestra amable, pero no parece ser muy normal. Con ella  vive  su hijo Gunni, un hombre obeso, con vendas en el rostro  que parece sufrir  una especie de retardo y ataques epilépticos,  lo único que hace es comer y ver  viejas caricaturas   en el televisor. Mientras esperan ayuda para  arreglar su coche, deberán pasar la noche allí. ¿Qué está pasando realmente? ¿Por qué  la pareja no se va de una vez  de esa casa? ¿Qué esconde esa  anciana de perturbador rostro?  ¿Cuál será el destino de Sam y Rylie?

The couple Sam and Rylie are really kind of stupid.  Any normal person would never go into that house. The old lady disgusts me with her face, that was my hook, her gestures caused me so much dislike that I couldn't stop looking at her. 

A few days ago I told you in a post that I have discovered that I am terrified of old women in horror movies.  Karen is an old woman whose look sticks in my mind. Although she has trouble walking, that makes her more terrifying. 

Gunni is the son, he looks sick, with a bandage around his face, watching cartoons on an old black and white TV. He is obese and occasionally has spasms or epileptic seizures. He has difficulty speaking and his scenes are nonsensical, done in the spirit of 1970s horror movies.  It may get repetitive, but I couldn't help but become increasingly drawn in to see what was going on in the story. 

You can easily guess what the plot direction is, no need to be a fortune teller, I told you it's something seen a thousand times in movies of this genre. But the mind of the screenwriters and the director seems to have made this movie especially for me. The story has a final part for sick minds to enjoy. 


There are also plot twists, which didn't surprise me, but if you are a somewhat clueless viewer, they may catch you by surprise.
 
The beginning of the film is somewhat chaotic and it can take you a few minutes to make sense of certain scenes that seem to have no connection. As we get into the extended climax of the story, those brief scenes will give us the explanation for the madness we are witnessing.

La pareja conformada pro   Sam y Rylie  son realmente  un poco estúpidos. Cualquier persona  normal  jamás entraría en esa casa. La anciana me  enferma su cara,ese fue mi gancho,  sus gestos me causaron tanto desagrado que no podía dejar de mirarla. 


Hace unos días les dije en un post que  he descubierto que me aterran las ancianas  en las películas de horror. Karen es una vieja cuya mirada  me quedo grabada en la mente. Aunque  tiene problemas para caminar, eso la hace más aterradora. 

Gunni es  el hijo, parece enfermo, con una venda  alrededor de su rostro, viendo caricaturas en una vieja televisión en blanco y negro. Obeso  y cada cierto tiempo le dan espasmos o ataques epilépticos. Tiene dificultad para hablar y sus escenas son  una  locura, hechas con el espíritu de las películas de horror de los  años setenta. Puede ser algo repetitivo, pero yo no podía dejar de  sentirme cada vez  mas atraído  por ver lo que ocurriría en la historia. 

Fácilmente adivinaremos cual es el rumbo de la trama, no hay que ser adivino, ya les dije que es algo mil veces visto en películas de este género. Pero las mentes de los guionistas y el director parece que hicieron este film especialmente para mí.  La historia tiene una parte final para  que la disfruten las mentes enfermas. 

También hay giros de guion, que no me causaron sorpresa, pero   si eres un espectador algo despistado, si  pueden  tomarte por sorpresa. 

El inicio del film es algo caótico y puede tomarte unos minutos el encontrarle sentido  a ciertas escenas que parecen no tener conexión. Cuando entramos al extenso clímax de la  historia, esas   breves escenas aportaran la explicación a la locura que estamos presenciando.

### Who is the director?
	
Devereux Milburn is the name of the director. I didn't know him and checking his IMDB profile, this film is his feature film debut.  Since 2008 he has been working on making short films, writing the scripts, editing, filming and even acting in two of the shorts.  I want to see more films from this filmmaker in the future. Hopefully he will get resources for his next projects, to do something more extreme and crazy. The best of the whole film is the fascinating atmosphere of the story.  An achievement of the team formed by the director of the film, together with cinematographer Dan Kennedy and above all by the extraordinary musical work of composer John Mehrmann. 

Mehrmann will hypnotize you with sound and music, you have been warned!  Incredible work by this young composer. Without his work, this movie wouldn't work, I wouldn't have liked it. great job!  It grabs you, doesn't let you out, every time it pulls you into the story and leaves you shattered.

Look at his instagram, what a sadness my god.  This man who has done a fierce job for this movie, only has 74 followers.  His previous musical work for a movie was in the movie Loud Places, directed by Dan Kennedy, the cinematographer of this movie, it's a work between friends. The film was first screened at the Nightstream Film Festival, held almost last year. The film was produced by Rubber Road Productions and Little Sky Film, the latter was also the producer of Dan Kennedy's Loud Places. Lo mejor de todo el film, es la fascinante atmósfera de la historia.  Un logro del equipo formado  por el director del film, junto al encargado de la fotografía Dan Kennedy y especialmente   por el extraordinario trabajo  musical del compositor John Mehrmann. 

Mehrmann te va a hipnotizar  con el  sonido y la música. ¡Estas advertido!  Un trabajo increíble de este joven compositor. Sin   su  trabajo, este film no funcionaria, no me hubiese gustado. ¡Buen trabajo!  Te atrapa, no te dejara salirte, cada vez te  meterá  en la  historia y te dejara devastado.

Revise su instagram. ¡Qué tristeza dios mío! Este hombre que ha hecho un  trabajo  feroz para este film, tiene solo  74 seguidores. Su anterior trabajo musical para una película fue en el film Loud Places, dirigido por  Dan Kennedy, el director de fotografía de este film, es un trabajo entre amigos. Sam. The aspiring actor who seems to be going through a difficult time in his relationship with his wife. He's a bit rude and Rylie is always trying to control him so he doesn't talk too much.  This character is played by Sawyer Spielberg, the son of the great Steven Spielberg.  I haven't seen much work from this actor, who must carry the weight of his father's last name.  I will only say that he is fine in his character. The script doesn't delve much into the main characters either.

Rylie. The scientist who studies the plague that plagues the crops in the rural area. She is a suspicious woman and is constantly trying to keep her boyfriend Sam in line.  She suspects that something is wrong in that gloomy house.  She is played by the beautiful Swedish actress Malin Barr, who has worked in several film and television productions, both in her home country of Sweden and in the United States.  It is not a long trajectory, it seems that she debuted in 2017, so we will surely see her in other productions soon, she is pretty, young and seems to me a good actress.

Karen. The kind old lady who will invite the couple to spend the night, prepare food for them and supposedly help them.  The character is played by actress Barbara Kingsley. She gives a haunting performance, the best of the ensemble.  The character is truly unpleasant. Some will surely recognize the actress from her work in the series Jessica jones.

Rounding out the cast is Jamie Bradley as Gunni, Karen's ailing son. Stephen D'Ambrose as Eulis, the farmer who throws the couple off his property and Joshua Patrick Dudley as the young man on the bicycle.

**Honeydew I recommend it only to those with weird tastes.   If you're looking for a fast-paced horror film with scares, this is not the film for you to see.   Now, if you like low budget productions, with a wacky but disturbing story, I think you might like it. It's not for everyone. I look forward to your comments after you see it.**

Sabiendo un poco el tipo de películas que te gustan, no puedo imaginar lo sombría y pesada que puede ser está película.

Me llama la atención que tenga algo del estilo de la **Matanza de Texas**, pero me inquieta la idea que sea más de lo mismo y sabes muy bien como soy con ese tema.

Pero joder en algún momento la tendré que ver!

El director tienen  esa influencia, pero  no llega  a esa obra maestra, pero si es lo suficiente enferma para que  me  gustara.  Dale la oportunidad a alguno de los  films que recomiendo jajaja Open your mind ! Tengo tiempo recomendando veas Come True, esa te va a explotar la mente con su final. Esta la ves después, cuando te dejes llevar por el lado mas oscuro  XD

I know what you mean for sure. As long as they are played well, it has a very eery effect. It's like the inverse of the classic horror movie child trope. 

I really enjoyed this review. Honestly, you interested me so much that I skipped a lot of it because I didn't want to learn more; as I'm sitting down to try and find somewhere to watch it now. As soon as you mentioned the director was clearly influenced by Texas Chainsaw I was sold. TCM is one of my favorite movies!

Really well done! I'll let you know what I think of the film and finish reading your review after!

It is influenced by that movie, but of course it does not reach the level of excellence of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  I hope you like the film, for me it was disturbing and it's the kind of movie I like, but I'm a bit sick in the head hahaha. Thanks for commenting

Hahah trust me I can relate to the "sick in the head" thing. The more fucked up a movie is, the more I enjoy it. It tends to evoke more emotions and give the film more strength. 

I enjoyed it! It was an interesting watch. I thought there were things they did really well and things they could have definitely done better. There were a few parts of the plot where I felt that they could have easily tied it together in a better way and got lazy. The obvious head-nods to TCM were tasteful and well done. The kid on the bike was clearly meant to be "The Hitchhiker" from TCM1; I just wish they tied his character into the development better. 

Overall I enjoyed it though, despite a few parts where I felt like they could have turned it from a fun movie into a great movie. But that's just my humble opinion. Overall, it was great! I had a great time watching it! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

La primera imagen de la publicación si le dices que pertenece a alguna película de horror de los 70' me la creo, es tal como dices, muy influenciada por Masacre en Texas, tal vez este film estrenado en el 2000 fuera sido un boom, pero eso no quiere decir que cree una base de fans.

Cuando veo este estilo de películas pienso que la gente es muy ingenua, después ves como se comportan en este tiempo y sabes de qué no están equivocados.

le sentí  esa influencia  a los films de terror de los setenta, incluso la forma en que esta  rodada , aunque la  trama ocurre en la actualidad, parece un film  de esa época. No le va a gustar a  todo el mundo, me puse a buscar  en las paginas de terror y   vi varias opiniones  muy negativas, pero   a mi  me   encanto.
