"There's no such thing as karma." I lamented to Richard, my friend.

"You can't say that. Karma exists, and it's always waiting to dish punishments or favors to those who deserve it. That's why they say what goes around will surely come around." Richard said in a bid to comfort me, but it wasn't working out so well for him.

"Well, it's been going around for a long time. What time will it come around? I'm so tired." I kept on nagging, till he gave up on the karma preaching.

As a girl child who's trying everything to make ends meet, I sometimes find myself in a tough spot, and it can be frustrating. I had just begun to work as a salesperson for a man whom my friend recommended. Richard convinced me that the man was a kind man with no issues, and I believed him because I trusted that he would never intentionally hurt me, but it didn't take long before I realized that this new boss wasn't who people thought him to be.

Even though I always tried to be diligent in my work, it was never enough for him. He kept imposing a lot of rules on me, and the funny thing was that these rules were never a part of the deal, to begin with.

"Jane, work starts by 8 am tomorrow." He said to me one Friday evening as I was preparing to head home.

"I don't understand. I thought we agreed that I'd be coming by 9:30 am on Saturdays. What's going on?" I asked him.

"That is how I want it to be now. I am the boss, and I make the rules here." He replied. 

"Sir, I'm a lady and I have myself to take care of. What time will I sleep or wake up? I still have laundry to do, and I have to clean my room. This wasn't the agreement; I can't spend my life here like I have nothing else doing." I complained bitterly.

"You can wake by 4 am, and you'll still finish. It's not my business however way you choose to do this, but I need you here by 8 am tomorrow." He said and turned away from me.

I felt really bad that he was changing every agreement we had before I started working for him. I called Richard, and complained to him, but he scoffed and took a deep breath.

"Jane, if you ask me, I'll say it's just time that's a problem now. All you should do is adjust, and reschedule yourself." Richard advised me.

I was not quite pleased with Richards's advice, but I took it anyway. The next day, I was at the shop by 8 am, but my boss was nowhere to be found. I sat idle there waiting for him for more than three hours before he finally sent someone to bring me the keys to the shop, so I could sample the goods we had. I took the keys and opened the two shops, and it took an extra two hours before I could sample all the goods we had for the two shops, but my boss still didn't come. After I was done sampling, a few more hours passed and he showed up. Not once did he bother to apologize for keeping me out there. I wanted to complain, but I decided to let it go because it was already 2 pm, and by 7 pm, I should be out of there, but my boss did something more shocking. By 6:30 pm, he picked up his bags and came to where I was sitting.

"Jane, I'll be going out now. Wait till I return before you start preparing to leave." He said.

"Sir, I can't be late because of you. I have chores and cleanups to do this evening. I can't wait." I said.

"What time did we open the shop that you're complaining like this?" He asked.

"If this is about the time we had the shop open, that one is on you. I was here as early as 8 am, so it's not my fault that you decided to come late. You should've let me stay home and come by 9 am." I replied.

He didn't respond, instead, he left the shop, and I stayed back there till it was almost 10 pm. When he came back, he still didn't apologize for keeping me past the agreed time. I was fuming with anger when I got back home, and I took it out on Richard the moment he called to ask if I was home safe.

"I can't continue with this job. This is turning into something else, and I don't like it and I don't think I can endure it anymore. For how long will I have to put up with his stupid attitude?" I fumed.

"I understand you. You're a nice person, Jane, and when you finally leave there, it'll be his loss because he won't be able to find anyone like you. His karma will surely hit him." He replied.

"There's no such thing as karma." I lamented.

Richard tried to convince me that what goes around comes around, but I didn't budge. I was so keen on believing that karma was a pile of stories made up to keep people in their good behaviors.

I worked for some weeks more, and I resigned when I felt I couldn't take it again. Not long after that, he got a new salesperson, but one of his customers that I had attended to in the past gave me a job that paid more than I could imagine with no stress. I was able to pay my bills and still save up as much as I could, but it wasn't the same for my old boss. His new salesperson was extremely rude to him. She would go home once she got tired, and he wouldn't dare to say anything about it. He couldn't still fire her because people might talk, seeing that I had left too.

"Have you heard about your old boss? I told you he won't see anyone that'll be as nice as you were to him." Richard said to me during one of his visits.

I laughed and nodded my head.
"Yeah, maybe karma did exist after all." I replied to him, and we laughed together.

I was relieved that I got a better job for myself, and I felt pity for my old boss that he had to deal with the dragon queen he had employed as a salesperson, but anyway, that was his karma and there was no way that I could intervene, so I let it be.
