# Era bella la flor

Era bella la flor;
en sus fulguraciones encendía la noche,
aun de aquellos que soñaban con verla
y que al amanecer corrían hacia el rocío 
para imaginarse cómo sería tocarla. 

Era bella;
hasta en la manera de sostenerse en el tallo 
parecía una campeona olímpica;
no había luna que se le igualara
ni zumbido de abeja que no la amara. 

Era la flor de un sueño,
y el mundo sentía cierto temor 
porque si su creador llegase a despertar
ella se iría con él;
y ya no importarían las fulguraciones 
ni los tallos con sus diligencias;
la luna no tendría competencia 
y cualquier zumbido se volvería común. 

Por eso el rey la mandó a cortar;
para conservarla,
y todas las tardes la ofrecía al pueblo a través del balcón.
Es hermosa, decían las jóvenes,
es serena, argumentaban las mujeres mayores, 
es un sueño, repetían los hombres.

Después vino la guerra
porque los otros reyes querían la flor.
La matanza duró lo necesario 
y cuando el rey perdió la defensa 
entregó la flor al nuevo dueño,
pero estaba marchita
y los cadáveres, pudriéndose,
y como el ganador no quiso la flor,
el rey que defendía se molestó con el creador,
prohibió los sueños
y a los jardines los mandó a lapidar.

Era bella la flor, pero terrible, 
así la recordaban los sobrevivientes;
puso a pelear los reyes,
acabó con un pueblo 
y condenó a los hombres a matar sus jardines;
allá van, nuevamente, 
en el pecho la piedra,
en la piedra la herida,
en la herida la sangre
y en la sangre las manos
por matar más belleza.

# The flower was beautiful

The flower was beautiful;
in its gleams it lit up the night,
even of those who dreamed of seeing it
and who at dawn ran towards the dew 
to imagine what it would be like to touch it. 

She was beautiful;
even in the way she held herself on the stalk 
she looked like an Olympic champion;
there was no moon to match her
nor a bee's buzz that did not love her. 

She was the flower of a dream,
and the world felt a certain fear 
for if her creator should awaken
she would go with him;
and it would no longer matter the gleams 
nor the stalks with their diligences;
the moon would have no competition 
and any hum would become commonplace. 

So the king had her cut down;
to preserve it,
and every evening he offered it to the people through the balcony.
It is beautiful, said the young women,
it is serene, argued the older women, 
it is a dream, the men repeated.

Then came the war
because the other kings wanted the flower.
The slaughter lasted as long as necessary 
and when the king lost the defense 
he gave the flower to the new owner,
but it was withered
and the corpses were rotting,
and as the winner did not want the flower,
the defending king became annoyed with the creator,
forbade the dreams
and sent the gardens to be stoned.

The flower was beautiful, but terrible. 
The survivors remember it as such;
it set kings to fight,
it wiped out a people 
and condemned men to kill their gardens;
there they go, again, 
in the breast the stone,
in the stone the wound,
in the wound the blood
and in the blood the hands
to kill beauty.
