**M**onday morning I decided to take my camera and my old bicycle and go out for a ride that would allow me to distract myself a little.

**I** decided to head for the small town of "Aguirre" which is a tiny village that belongs to this municipality and is only 7 kilometers away by secondary roads from where I live. 

>**D**ecidí poner rumbo al pequeño poblado de "Aguirre" que es un minúsculo pueblo perteneciente a este municipio y que dista apenas 7 kilómetros por carreteras secundarias del lugar donde vivo.

<sup>***The main house of "El Reposo" was once one of the main attractions of the village for tourists, and all kinds of events were held here.... I even remember attending my younger sister's wedding celebration here, perhaps 25 years ago.... Today it has fallen prey to decay and may not be standing for long***.</sup>

><sup>***La casa principal de "El Reposo" fue en su momento uno de los principales atractivos del pueblo para los turistas, y en ella se realizaban eventos de todo tipo... Incluso  recuero haber asistido aquí a la celebración de la boda de mi hermana menor, hace ya quizás unos 25 años... Hoy en día es presa del deterioro y quizás no estará mucho tiempo en pie***.</sup>

**G**oing to Aguirre takes only a few minutes, because the road is quite flat except for the passage of a couple of rivers that cross between the two villages... So less than 30 minutes after leaving my house, I was already arriving at the outskirts of that place. 

>**I**r hasta Aguirre toma entonces pocos minutos, pues la vía es bastante plana salvo por el paso de un par de ríos que cruzan entre ambos pueblos... Entonces menos de 30 minutos después de salir de mi casa, ya estaba llegando a las afuera de aquel lugar. 

**A**rriving in Aguirre always causes an emotional impact on me, because I knew this town as a thriving town full of inns, retreat centers, huge haciendas with beautiful orange groves, small colonial houses very well maintained and an impressive tourist potential. In fact, during the whole week at almost any time of the year, you could see people visiting Aguirre, exploring its nooks and crannies and enjoying what its people and services had to offer. 

>**L**legar a Aguirre siempre causa un impacto emocional en mi, pues conocí este pueblo siendo una pujante localidad repleta de posadas, centros de retiro, haciendas enormes con hermosos naranjales, pequeñas casa coloniales muy bien mantenidas y un potencial turístico impresionante. De hecho, durante toda la semana en casi cualquier época del año, se podía ver personas visitando Aguirre, explorando sus rincones y disfrutando de lo que ofrecían sus pobladores y sus servicios.

<sup>***In the small "Plaza Bolivar" of the village, one comes across the church, which is perhaps a rather large construction for the small village and is maintained in fairly good condition, probably with the help of some entity or organization belonging to the clergy.***</sup>

<sup>***En la pequeña "Plaza Bolívar" del pueblo, uno se encuentra con iglesia, la cual es una construcción quizás bastante grande para el pequeño pueblo y se mantiene en bastantes buenas condiciones, seguramente con ayuda de algún ente u organización perteneciente al clero***.</sup>

<sup>***The small grotto in which the baptismal font was located is still there thanks to its strong stone construction... I remember when my parents used to bring me here on Sundays, when I was a child and I liked to climb the grotto as soon as my parents were careless and did not see me.... To me it seemed to be a big mountain of stones very good to climb!***</sup>

><sup>***La pequeña gruta dentro de la cual estaba la pila bautismal sigue allí gracias a su fuerte construcción en piedras... Recuero cuando mis padres me traían aquí los domingos, siendo yo un niño y me gustaba escalar la gruta apenas mis padres se descuidaban y no me veían... ¡A mi me parecía una gran montaña de piedras muy buena para escalar***.</sup>

**B**ut that was perhaps a couple of decades ago... Well, today Aguirre is a town practically submerged in solitude... Everything that made it the "jewel" of our municipality, simply went to hell, due to the great political, social and economic crisis that began to affect our country with the advent of highly corrupt and inefficient governments. 

>**P**ero eso fue hace quizás un par de décadas atrás... Pues hoy en día Aguirre es un pueblo prácticamente sumido en la soledad... Todo aquello que lo convirtió en la "joya" de nuestro municipio, simplemente se fue al demonio, debido a la gran crisis política, social y económica que comenzó a afectar a nuestro país con el advenimiento de gobiernos altamente corruptos e ineficientes.

**M**any of the houses in the town center are abandoned and others have "FOR SALE" signs.... The town, once cheerful and with people in the streets, now looks dull and silent... This is something difficult to assimilate and I suppose that such extreme desolation has to do with the fact that Aguirre always had a much smaller population than the other towns in the area and therefore was more affected by the exodus of young people, who were obviously the most productive. 

>**M**uchas de las casas del casco del pueblo están abandonadas y otras tienen carteles de "EN VENTA"... El pueblo otrora alegre y con personas en las calles, ahora luce mustio y silencioso... Esto es algo difícil de asimilar y me supongo que una desolación tan extrema tiene que ver con el hecho de que Aguirre tenía siempre un población mucho menor que los otros pueblos de la zona y por lo tanto se vio mas afectado por el éxodo de las personas jóvenes, quienes eran la más productivas obviamente.

<sup>***As a child I used to remember a sweet old lady who sold ice cream and knick-knacks through the windows of this beautiful old house... This time I stood for several minutes in front of its facade and I could not see anyone living there***.</sup> 

><sup>***De niño suelo recordar a una dulce anciana que vendía helados y chucherías a través de las ventanas de esta linda y antigua casa... Esta vez estuve varios minutos en frente de su fachada y no pude observar a nadie habitándola***.</sup>

**B**ut, anyway, I decided that I had not come there to get depressed but to take pictures... And the fact is that in Aguirre, perhaps precisely because of its solitude, you can take good pictures of some corners whose view still offers some interest either for the drama or for the remaining ornamentation... 

>**P**ero, de la manera que sea, decidí que no había llegado hasta allí deprimirme sino para hacer fotos... Y es que en Aguirre, debido quizás precisamente a su soledad, se pueden hacer buenas fotos de algunos rincones cuya vista sigue ofreciendo algún interés ya se por el drama o por el ornato remanente...

But I do remember that in the outbuildings next to the church (left side in the foreground) there was a small office with a policeman and a school of handicrafts and culinary arts... Today they are all closed.... This photo was taken around 10AM... The loneliness is overwhelming.***</sup> 

><sup>***Esta es quizás la que podría llamarse "La calle principal de Aguirre"... No vi ningún cartel con su nombre y tampoco recuerdo haberlo visto nunca... Pero sí recuerdo que en las dependencias aledañas a la iglesia (lado izquierdo en primer plano) funcionaba una pequeña oficina con un policía y había una escuela de manualidades y artes culinarias... Hoy en día todas están cerradas... Esta foto fue tomada cera de las 10AM... La soledad es abrumadora.***</sup>

<sup>***This beautiful chapel is in a property belonging to one of the most prominent families in the town (Bejarano Familiy)... It stands out since its owners have left the country and now the property is for sale through a real estate company***.</sup>
