Scientists from the École Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) recently published a paper about an idea that they already patented. To be more specific they propose capturing carbon dioxide from the exhausts of cars and turning it into a liquid that would be stored on top of the vehicle.

<h3>Liquefaction instead of an exhaust</h3>

The experts even have an answer to the inevitable question of what to do with the CO2. The liquefied carbon dioxide can be transported to a gas station where it can have several different uses – including transforming it back into fuel using renewable energy sources.

The idea is to take hot exhaust gases and cool them down and separate the water from them. Then they will pass through special absorption materials that were developed at EPFL. During this process, CO2 is isolated from other gases such as nitrogen and oxygen.

Then the pure CO2 would be extracted and compressed using energy from the car's engine turning it into a liquid. The liquid can then be stored in a tank on top (or anywhere else) of the car and then stored at the gas station.

<h3>Trucks only – for now</h3>

The current version of the system is usable only for large vehicles such as trucks or buses. Part of the system is a capsule that is 2 m x 0.9 m x 1.2 m large. At the moment the system of capturing CO2 is still just a concept and its authors think making into reality will take a few years. But the next step is to test the experiment in the real world. The scientists are hoping that up to 90 % of C02 emissions could be recycled this way.

One big potential advantage of the system – compared to electric or even hydrogen vehicles – is the fact that it doesn't need a complete transformation of cars and how we make them move. It could just be an additional part added to current vehicles that could majorly reduce their CO2 emissions.
