La tendencia de los partidos a 5 sets sigue dominando la escena en el abierto francés y eso es algo que nos agrada como fanáticos del tenis. Las jornadas de ayer y hoy siguen dejando algunas sorpresas, pero es algo previsible en este tipo de eventos llenos de tanta diversidad; jugadores con alto favoritismo que cayeron (Sinner ante Altamira) y otros avanzaron ante rivales complicados (Monfils vs Báez por ejemplo). También grandes alegrías sudamericanas en las raquetas de Nico Jarry, Juanpi Varillas y Fran Cerúndolo, que siguen en la pelea en tan importante torneo, dejando en alto nuestro continente. Sin embargo, hubo esta mañana una batalla que me gustó mucho; la que protagonizaron el italiano Lorenzo Sonego ante el ruso Andrey Rublev; y de la que les quiero compartir mis impresiones.

No obstante, lo que ví en este duelo no resultó nada nuevo o inesperado, dado que la combatividad de Sonego es más que conocida y es algo que contrasta con las dudas que a veces he observado en Rublev. A pesar de cerrar el 2do set con 6-0 y mantener el marcador igualado hasta el 9no game, la mecánica de juego del ruso no estaba siendo la mejor (en comparación con la habitual). Se notaba muy erguido y tenso al soltar su drive y peor aún con su backhand, casi al estilo de un robot ja,ja,ja. Esto trajo como consecuencia dos cosas: tiros planos con poco efecto y errores no forzados en los rallys; pero hubo un tercer factor y fue el resurgir del italiano, que comenzó a soltarse más en ataque y mejoró en su primer servicio. Acá debo destacar el forehand en carrera de Lorenzo, que corrió muy bien y atacó aún mejor, con una marcada puntería cruzada sobre la línea. Esto desencajó a su rival y lo puso mentalmente abajo, afectando su efectividad y su confianza.

No es que sea algo fácil, porque aunque se trata de atletas profesionales de primer nivel, también son seres humanos. Pero con Sonego ganando 6-3 y 7-6(3) el 3er y 4to set; todo quedaba por definirse en la 5to manga. Creo que los asistentes ya se están acostumbrando a estás lides, ya que Varillas lo hizo en sus dos primeros partidos y mientras escribo estas líneas, acaba de concretar otro triunfo histórico ante el polaco Hurkacz (también en 5 largos sets). Esto es algo que me gusta ver en el deporte, que no se esté dando todo por sentado, sino que las sorpresas nos mantengan emocionados. Es algo que nos indica que las cosas están cambiando, con una alternancia que favorece el deporte individual.

Sonego siguió con su plan en el último set, como si le estuviera enseñando a Rublev la manera de jugar para ganar. Lorenzo tiene todo lo que le falta a los Rublev, Zverev, Tsitsipás y Ruud, para ganar los grandes partidos en GS, aunque carece de otros tantos recursos técnicos, le sobra la actitud de no rendirse jamás. El partido terminaría con otro 6-3 para detener el reloj en 3 horas y 42 minutos; y ahora Sonego enfrentará a único ruso en competencia, Karen Kachanov.


Me hubiese gustado ver otro capítulo entre los amigos nacidos en Moscú, a los que hace poco dediqué una deis publicaciones. Con la eliminación de Andrey, Daniil y Aslán Karatsev, solo queda Karen para defender su omitida bandera (en el ranking no aparece por el tema del conflicto con Ucrania). Ahora que Sonego eliminó al N°7 del mundo, tendrá que competir ante el compañero de dobles de Rublev y quién también formará parte del top ten a partir de la próxima semana. Alegría deportiva de sobra es lo que nos está regalando este segundo "Grande" de la temporada ¡Enhorabuena por el tenis!
