 Last weekend's trip included three National Parks, all of which were beautiful, especially in the recent winter snow. But the reason we went into Southern Utah in the first place, and very definitely the main attraction, was Bryce Canyon!   Bryce Canyon was named for Ebenezer Bryce, one of the Latter-day Saint pioneers who settled the area. It was named a National Monument in 1923 and upgraded to National Park status in 1928. And it is beyond breathtaking!   But guess what? It isn't technically a canyon at all! A canyon is formed by the erosion of rock from a central stream. Bryce Canyon was formed by erosion from both water and wind as well other elements to create fragile-looking elegant shapes called "hoodoos." These hoodoos are clustered in massive natural amphitheaters that extend for miles. The colors in the red rock can be widely varied in hue, and each hoodoo is of course a completely distinct shape.   The photo opportunities are endless on any day of the year, and there is a reason many landscape photographers consider this park something of a rite of passage. But I'm not sure it looks any more fabulous than it does when it is covered in snow!  For years now, it has been a particular goal of mine to capture Bryce Canyon in the snow. And this year has been the absolutely PERFECT year for it! The amount of snow that Bryce -- and Utah in general -- has received this year has been incredible. Many places have received their entirely yearly average of snow just in the month of January. Bryce itself was buried in three to four feet of snow. The effect was simply extraordinary!   Frankly, I don't know how any other trip will even compare! LOL But that doesn't mean I don't intend to go back many other times. The downside of all the snow was that certain places in the park were closed off and inaccessible. So clearly I need to take another trip to see more of the park!
