It was the early 80's, and I had been living in Caracas for a few months, where I had moved in order to study *civil engineering* at the university. One weekend, I went to the movies at a frequented shopping mall in the city, more commonly known by its acronym **CCCT**, in the company of a few friends from the student residence where we were staying. 

At that time, a **Metro Goldwyn Mayer** (MGM) festival was being held, where some memorable films from this renowned American film production company, now owned by Amazon, were being screened. 

The film selected, I do not remember the reason and if it was unanimously or on the contrary, as they say in boxing slang, a *split decision*; was *Soylent Green*, a 1973 film production. 

Subsequently, I had the opportunity to catch it on a subscription channel a few years ago, to watch it again and appreciate details that I had not noticed a few decades ago.</div>

## *Soylent Green*

*Soylent Green* is a dystopian film based on the 1966 science fiction novel, *Make Room! Make Room!* by American writer **Harry Harrison**, and directed by Richard Fleischer. 

The main cast includes, among others, the actors: 

+ **Charlton Heston**, Detective Robert Thorn.
+ **Edward G. Robinson**, Sol Roth.
+ **Leigh Taylor-Young**, Shirl.
+ **Chuck Connors**, Tab Fielding.
+ **Joseph Cotten**, William R. Simonson.
+ **Brock Peters**, Hatcher. 

The plot is set in New York City, in an apocalyptic year 2022. The population explosion, pollution, global warming and the depletion of natural resources have turned the world into a veritable catastrophe. 

Millions of people are crowded in the streets and buildings of a large part of the city, where its inhabitants, mostly unemployed, stand in long lines to receive from the government their food ration, represented in yellow and red tablets made of seaweed, known as *soylent* after the name of the manufacturing company *Soylent*, a contraction of the words "soy" and "lentil". </div>

On the other hand, a privileged minority, mostly composed of officials and businessmen linked to the government of the day, live in luxury apartments and with unrestricted access to food and benefits of all kinds, virtually unknown to the rest of society, which live in the most extreme poverty. Even for this small group of people, women are part of the *furniture* of the houses they live in. 

The character played by the actor **Charlton Heston**, is a New York police detective who is called to investigate the murder of **William R. Simonson**, a senior executive of the company *Soylent*, which had recently begun to develop and market a new food product known as **soylent green**, and which, according to advertising, would be based on *marine plankton*, rich in nutrients.  

While collecting evidence from the crime scene, the detective goes through the victim's luxurious apartment, where he discovers, to his surprise, things he had never seen before in his life, such as a refrigerator with fresh food inside, liquor, a shower with hot water and soap, and even a library. Subsequently, the concubine of the deceased executive, **Shirl**, a beautiful and radiant young woman of only 21 years of age, who was considered "part of the furniture", since she was included with the purchase or rental of the house, and **Simonson**'s bodyguard, who were outside the apartment at the time of the homicide, were present at the scene, and were therefore ruled out as the perpetrators of the crime. 

The detective **Robert Thorn**, lives with a friend **Sol Roth**, an old man who was a professor, and who served as the detective's assistant, and who due to his vast knowledge, has earned the nickname of "Book", and who is dedicated to research data in books (by then, paper had become extinct, and consequently, the production of books ceased), about the cases assigned to **Thor**. The old man, when he is idle, lives reminiscing about the past: when the planet had friendly conditions to be inhabited, and there were enough food sources for everyone. However, **Thorn**, who has lived most of his life in the humanitarian catastrophe in which the whole world finds itself, shows no interest in these stories, which he finds hard to believe.</div>

During the course of the investigation into the murder of the top executive, **Roth** makes a terrifying discovery: "the oceans and the plankton are dying", which leads him to the decision to end his own life, for which he goes to a euthanasia center called *Home*; a place where people go voluntarily, and for 20 minutes before dying, they enjoy music and beautiful scenes, in which the world is seen as it was before the ecological disaster. 

In the final scenes of the film, the old man, shortly before dying, confesses to his detective friend, the true origin of the proteins with which the *soylent green* is made and which does not correspond to marine plankton... but to **human corpses**.</div>

## *Personal Appreciation*

I like movies and television, however, I am very far from proclaiming myself as a "connoisseur", and even less, with enough merits to make an objective criticism of a movie, on the contrary, if the theme is attractive, the soundtrack is adequate, the photography is good and the acting of the people I like, it will be enough to give it a good rating, even if my opinion may not be to everyone's liking. 

Regarding "Soylent Green", I could highlight the following: 

+ It is a science fiction film about a future, today present, since the plot takes place in 2022; chaotic and apocalyptic, which maintains a good level of suspense, although at the end, you can intuit the answer to the question posed from the beginning, what is the soylent green? 

+ Don't expect grandiloquent and pyrotechnic special effects, remember that this is a film with half a century behind it, and on the other hand, they are not necessary either. 

+ The investigation of the crime is just an excuse to show viewers the terrifying effects of a future marked by overpopulation, climate change, and even what a nuclear war could mean, although the latter is not reflected in the plot. It is also a strong criticism of society, where a privileged few with power and money, make decisions that favor them, to the detriment of the rest of humanity, although the latter, we already know. 

+ Good performances by **Charlton Heston** and **Edward G. Robinson**, two sacred acting monsters, however, in my personal opinion, **Robinson** stands out above **Heston**'s anti-divo hero role. 

+ The film is not available on **Netflix** and I don't know if it is on other streaming platforms, however, it is possible to find it on **YouTube**.</div>

Corrían los primeros años de la década de los 80, y tenía pocos meses viviendo en Caracas, a donde me había trasladado con la finalidad de cursar estudios de *ingeniería civil* en la universidad. Un fin de semana, acudí al cine en un frecuentado centro comercial de la ciudad, más comúnmente conocido por sus siglas **CCCT**, en compañía de unos pocos amigos de la residencia estudiantil donde nos encontrábamos hospedados. 

En aquel momento, se realizaba un festival de la **Metro Goldwyn Mayer** (MGM), donde se estaban proyectando algunos filmes memorables de esta reconocida productora cinematográfica estadounidense, hoy en día, propiedad de Amazon. 

La película seleccionada, no recuerdo la razón y si lo fue de forma unánime o por el contrario, como se dice en el argot boxístico, una *decisión dividida*; fue *Cuando el Destino nos Alcance*, una producción cinematográfica del año 1973. 

Posteriormente, tuve la oportunidad de pescarla en un canal por suscripción unos años atrás, para verla nuevamente y apreciar detalles que no había notado unas décadas atrás.</div>

*Cuando el Destino nos Alcance* es una película distópica basada en la novela de ciencia ficción de 1966, *Hagan sitio!, ¡hagan sitio* del escritor estadounidense **Harry Harrison**, y dirigida por Richard Fleischer. 

En el reparto principal se encuentran, entre otros,  los actores: 

+ **Charlton Heston**, Detective Robert Thorn.
+ **Edward G. Robinson**, Sol Roth.
+ **Leigh Taylor-Young**, Shirl.
+ **Chuck Connors**, Tab Fielding.
+ **Joseph Cotten**, William R. Simonson.

La trama se desarrolla en la ciudad de Nueva York, en un apocalíptico año 2022. La explosión demográfica, la contaminación, el calentamiento global y el agotamiento de los recursos naturales, han convertido al mundo en una verdadera catástrofe. 

Millones de personas se encuentran hacinadas en las calles y edificaciones de una gran parte de la ciudad, donde sus habitantes, en su gran mayoría desempleados, hacen largas colas para recibir del gobierno su ración de alimentos, representadas en tabletas de color amarillo y rojo elaboradas de algas marinas, conocidas como *soylent* por ser el nombre de la empresa fabricante *Soylent*, contracción de las palabras "soya" y "lenteja". 

Por otra parte, una minoría privilegiada, integrada en su gran mayoría por funcionarios y empresarios ligados al gobierno de turno, viven en apartamentos de lujo y con acceso irrestricto a alimentos y beneficios de toda índole, prácticamente desconocidos por el resto de la sociedad, las cuales viven en la mas extrema pobreza. Incluso, para este reducido grupo de personas, las mujeres son parte del *mobiliario* de las viviendas que habitan.</div>

El personaje interpretado por el actor **Charlton Heston**, es un detective de la policía neoyorquina que es llamado a investigar el asesinato de **William R. Simonson**, un alto directivo de la empresa *Soylent* que recientemente había comenzado a elaborar y comercializar un nuevo producto alimenticio conocido como **soylent verde**, y el cual, de acuerdo a la publicidad, estaría basado en *plancton marino*, rico en nutrientes.  

Mientras recolecta evidencias de la escena del crimen, el detective recorre el lujoso apartamento de la víctima, donde descubre con gran sorpresa, cosas que nunca había visto en su vida, tales como, un refrigerador con alimentos frescos en su interior, licores, una ducha con agua caliente y jabón, e incluso, una biblioteca. Posteriormente acuden al lugar, la concubina de fallecido ejecutivo, **Shirl**, una hermosa y radiante joven de tan solo 21 años de edad, a quien se le consideraba "parte del mobiliario", por cuanto venía incluida con la compra o alquiler de la vivienda, y el guardaespaldas de **Simonson**, quienes se encontraban fuera del apartamento al momento del homicidio, por lo cual, fueron descartados como autores materiales del crimen. 

El detective **Robert Thorn**, vive con un amigo **Sol Roth**, un anciano quien fuese profesor, y que se desempeñaba como ayudante del detective, y que debido a sus vastos conocimientos, se ha ganado el apodo de "Libro",  y que se dedica a investigar datos en libros (para aquel entonces, el papel se había extinguido, y en consecuencia, cesó la producción de libros), acerca de los casos asignados a **Thor**. El anciano, cuando se encuentra desocupado, vive rememorando el pasado: cuando el planeta poseía condiciones amigables para ser habitado, y existía suficiente fuentes alimenticias para todos. Sin embargo, **Thorn**, que ha vivido gran parte de su vida en la catástrofe humanitaria en la que encuentra el mundo entero; no muestra mayor interés en estas historias, e incluso, las encuentra difíciles de creer.</div>

Durante el transcurso de la investigación del asesinato del alto ejecutivo, **Roth** hace un aterrador descubrimiento: "los océanos y el plancton se están muriendo", lo que lo lleva a la decisión de acabar con su propia vida, para lo cual acude a un centro de eutanasia llamado *El Hogar*; un sitio en donde la gente acude voluntariamente,  y que por espacio de 20 minutos antes de morir, disfrutan de música y escenas hermosas, en las cuales se ve el mundo como era antes del desastre ecológico. 

En las escenas finales del film, el anciano poco antes de morir, le confiesa a su amigo detective, el verdadero origen de las proteínas con las que se elabora el *soylent verde* y el cual no corresponde a plancton marino... sinó a **cadáveres humanos**.</div>

## *Apreciación Personal*

Me gusta el cine y la televisión, sin embargo, estoy muy lejos de autoproclamarme como "conocer", y menos aún, con méritos suficientes para realizar una crítica objetiva de una película, por el contrario, si el tema es atractivo, la banda sonora es adecuada, la fotografía es buena y la actuación de los personas me gustan, bastará para darle una buena calificación, aún cuando pueda mi opinión pueda no ser del agrado de todos. 

Con respecto a "Cuando el Destino nos Alcance", podría destacar lo siguiente: 

+ Es una película de ciencia ficción sobre un futuro, hoy presente, por cuanto la trama se desarrolla en 2022; caótico y apocalíptico, que mantiene un buen nivel de suspenso, aunque al final, puede intuirse la respuesta a la interrogante que se plantea desde el inicio, ¿qué es el soylent verde? 

+ No esperen grandilocuentes y pirotécnicos efectos especiales, recuerden que es un film con medio siglo a cuestas, y por otra parte, tampoco son necesarios. 

+ La investigación del crimen, es apenas una excusa para mostrar a los espectadores, los efectos aterradores de un futuro marcado por la sobrepoblación, el cambio climático, e incluso, lo que podría significar un guerra con armas nucleares, aunque esto último, no está reflejado en la trama. También es una fuerte crítica a la sociedad, donde unos pocos privilegiados con poder y dinero, toman decisiones que les favorecen, en perjuicio del resto de la humanidad, aunque esto último, ya lo sabemos. 

+ Buenas interpretaciones de **Charlton Heston** y **Edward G. Robinson**, dos monstruos sagrados de la actuación, sin embargo, en mi opinión personal, destaca la de **Robinson** por encima del papel de héroe anti-divo de **Heston**. 

+ La película no está disponible en **Netflix** y desconozco si lo está en otras plataformas streaming, sin embargo, es posible encontrarla en **YouTube**.</div>

Yo no he visto esta película, pero después de leer tu reseña puedo ver que de verdad estaban adelantados en el tiempo cuando la hicieron, a veces este tipo de cosas asusta un poco por decirlo de alguna manera, en el sentido de como pudieron predecir tantas cosas que incluso realmente están ocurriendo hoy en día, me imagino que en su momento de estreno fue una gran película. El tema de la sobrepoblación, cambio climático y demás tragedias que pueden conducir a un apocalipsis, ha sido una preocupación constante desde los años 60, la diferencia es que ahora con internet y las Redes Sociales, puede difundirse a nivel mundial.

También están las películas estilo "Back to the Future" (Volver al Futuro), y la serie animada "Los Supersónicos", donde en el futuro (es decir, hoy en día) los carros pueden volar y otras cosas, que aún no han llegado.
