**I present today's protagonists, an experienced surgeon, and a student in her last year of study. A few months ago I was able to attend a surgery room in a hospital in Havana, thanks to my work as a photojournalist for Juventud Técnica magazine.**

The first thing I thought was the possibility of getting a bad impression of what it means to see a surgery with your own eyes and more being an open chest operation, but not at all. I arrived early at the hospital and I was welcomed at the entrance to go up to the room. Everything about the surgery was explained to me, although I already had an idea in mind of what I should do or at least try to capture. I dressed in those same green clothes that they see as the protocol indicates and fulfilled all the measures. I was about to enter the room and what they didn't tell me was that they had already started. My first impression after crossing the door was a strong smell of blood that I did not expect at all, but as the minutes passed I was adapting until I did not even feel it.

>Lo primero que pensé fue la posibilidad de llevarme una mala impresión por lo que supone ver una cirugía con tus propios ojos y más siendo una operación a pecho abierto, pero para nada. Llegue desde temprano al hospital y me recibieron en la entrada para subirme al salón. Se me explico todo sobre la cirugía, aunque yo ya iba con una idea en mente de lo que debía hacer o al menos tratar de capturar. Me vestí con esas mismas ropas verdes que ven como el protocolo indica y cumpliendo todas las medidas. Ya estaba por entrar al salón y lo que no me dijeron fue que ya habían comenzado. La primera impresión tras atravesar la puerta fue un fuerte olor a sangre que para nada me esperaba, pero con el pasar de los minutos me fui adaptando hasta que ya ni lo sentía.

I arrived at the moment when they began to cut so that in addition to the blood, you could feel at the moment a little smell of burning flesh from a kind of laser scalpel they were using. This part of the operation was done by the student with the advice of the main surgeon, since it was in a university hospital, and we were even accompanied by several students who only observed. I was very surprised that I was not shocked to see how they did everything, one usually thinks that seeing an operation can make one's body shake, but this was not the case. Little by little I got closer to being able to take closer shots and the great thing is that it created a beautiful contrast when focusing on the student's hands, with the help of the lamp they used to see inside the person. >Llegue en el momento en que comenzaban a cortar por lo que además de la sangre, se podía sentir a momento en un poco de olor a carne quemada por una especie de bisturí laser que utilizaban. Esta parte de la operación fue hecha por la estudiante con la asesoría del cirujano principal, dado que estaba en un hospital universitario, e incluso nos acompañaban varios estudiantes que solamente observaban. Me sorprendió mucho que no me impactara ver como hacían todo, uno suele pensar que puede removernos el cuerpo el ver una operación, pero no fue el caso. Poco a poco me fui acercando para poder hacer tomas más cercanas y lo genial es que se creaba un contraste bello al enfocar a las manos de la alumna, por la ayuda de la lámpara que utilizaban para poder ver en el interior de la persona. After a few hours, the surgeon took over and while he was doing his work, he also taught the students. Even I peeked out from time to time to try to understand something of what they were talking about. It was not until several hours later that I was able to take the most important photo for which I had gone, without detracting from the others. It happens that the importance of this operation was given by the use of equipment that evaluates the blood flow and other factors in the vessels and veins that leave the heart when the surgery has been completed. This allows us to know if it has been done successfully, if not, we would have to start over again. Everything went wonderfully luckily, although there were some complications during the process that are normal. The following images are a bit sensitive, so I am using @peakd's Spoiler, in case it could be harmful to someone to see them. 

>Pasadas unas horas, tomo el mando el cirujano que mientras iba realizando su trabajo, también enseñaba a los alumnos. Hasta yo me asomaba de vez en cuando para tratar de entender algo de lo que hablaban. No fue hasta varias de horas después que pude hacer la foto más importante por la que había ido, sin quitar mérito a las demás. Pasa que la importancia de esta operación, estaba dada por el uso de un equipo que evalúa el flujo sanguíneo y otros factores en los vasos y venas que salen del corazón cuando ya se ha terminado la cirugía. Esto permite saber si se ha realizado con éxito, de no ser así se tendría que comenzar de nuevo. Todo salió de maravilla por suerte, aunque si hubo algunas complicaciones durante el proceso que son normales. And after almost 7 hours in a surgery room, I turned off the camera, thanked all the staff there for their commendable work, and went home looking forward to editing my photos. Tengo un amigo acá en Ciego de Ávila que lleva años documentando gráficamente el Simposio Internacional de Artroscopía que se hace en la provincia, entre las primeras cosas que filmó fue una cirugía que constituía una clase magistral de un reconocido cirujano norteamericano. Mi amigo llegó allí, pero la diferencia contigo es que él no tenía idea de que era una cirugía lo que iba a filmar, se enteró cuando lo vistieron de verde y lo metieron en el salón. Para no hacer el cuento tan largo, tanto fue el nerviosismo de mi amigo que terminó tropezando con el cable del monitor que servía de referencia al cirujano, demás esta decirte que no terminó de filmar la operación 😅

Si, asi mismo, pero bueno... aprendió. En su defensa le habian dicho que iba a filmar una conferencia, solo que no le explicaron que el tipo daba la conferencia desde el propio salón de operaciones y con las manos en La Masa. Así cualquiera se pone nervioso.

Jajaja venia preparado para algo así, pero no, imagino que depende de cada tipo de cirugía pero la limpieza constante también ayuda a eliminar los olores.

En dicho proceso, esas valientes personas que forman parte de un equipo médico-enfermería, realizan el loable trabajo que devuelve la salud y estabilidad al paciente que se somete a cirugía.
