Hello beloved hivers! Today I'll take you on a subterranean journey. It'll be dark and wet; fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the route!

>I was invited by a local man to join a small group on an adventurous excursion to a mystical cave deep in the Amazonian jungle. "adventurous" , "mystical" , "jungle" , "cave" were enough words to persuade me!

We're going to explore the *Cueva de los Tayos de Tayu Jee*. "*Cueva de los Tayos*" is actually a common name that refers to a certain type of caves: caves in which **oilbirds** dwell. Thus, the English name for these caves would be *Oilbird Caves*. 

# The Oilbird
The oilbird is a nocturnal bird species (*Steatornis caripensis*) that nests in colonies inside caves.

They derive their name from their dietary habits: they feed on the fruits of the oil palm, which makes them the ONLY vegan nocturnal flying birds! Another astonishing fact about them is that they navigate by echolocation, just like bats do. The oilbirds are found in the northern areas of South America. 

>Spoiler: we did see one oilbird but only for a couple of nanoseconds! Sadly I didn't manage to take a picture...

# How to get there
Our location is Pastaza, Ecuador.
Following the road from Puyo to Macas, at km 63 there's a sign for the village of Chuwitayo. From there, entering the road to Chapintza, you will come across a gravel road which is the beginning of the trail. It took us around 30 minutes to walk to our first stop which was the community project "*Yamaram Jintis Tayu Jee*" (I wish to write about this experience in a future post). From there, it's an one-and-a-half-hour walk to the cave.

# Entering the cave
As soon as we reached our destination, we took a break and our guide seized the opportunity to give un some background information about the cave. The cave we were going to go into, is a river cave which, at some point along its geological history, had its roof collapse. This collapse resulted in a narrow gorge that continues underground. The cave is large and wide, with numerous paths leading to different directions. It's a total of 7 underground kilometers! We were going to traverse the main path which was a bit less than 1km long.

Our guide adviced us to take as few things as possible with us, as we were going to get into water. I couldn't possibly leave my camera behind and he did reassure me that if I was cautious it'd be alright. This and a headlamp were the only things I had on me.

In we go!
Rather early on, we had to kneel down and crawl through a narrow passage. The ground was muddy and sticky. Hence we got all wet and dirty but it was of course much worth it. As soon as we crossed that narrow stretch, we came across a wide part of the cave:

Soon we got to the water part. Our guide had already prepared us that we were going to have to swim in cold water for a couple of meters. So we took a last picture before getting soaked:

After our epic swim which left no victims behind, we got to a part of the cave that was suddenly very narrow.

Our guide told us that we had to squeeze through that narrow corridor. Not only was it extremely narrow, but we also had to be balancing on the rocks that were on our left and on our right, as there was no firm ground underneath our feet.

We managed to successfully walk along the tunnel. No broken limbs, just adrenaline and motivation to explore further!

# Some zoology 
During our walk into the bowels of the earth, our guide was showing us the spiders that dwell in this subterranean habitat.

Insects that live in caves are considered to be astonishing organisms that are highly adapted to the extreme underground conditions. What is more, closely investigating these creatures can shed light to key evolutionary processes, as they have exclusively evolved within an isolated habitat of unique characteristics. To put it in more simple words, a cave spider from this cave will be completely different not only from a cave spider of a cave in Philippines, but also from a cave spider of a cave in close proximity, even in the very same region of the jungle. They're all unique to their own underground void.

# Heading back

This is as far as we were going to walk. There's much more to explore of this cave and the adventurous voice inside me was saying "*Maria, you ought to come back and go deeper in the cave, explore more!*" I wish to satisfy this request one day!
Till then, I hold on to the beautiful memories of this underground excursion and this wonderful group of people.</div>

Vamos a explorar la *Cueva de los Tayos de Tayu Jee*. "*Cueva de los Tayos*" es en realidad un nombre común que se refiere a un cierto tipo de cuevas: cuevas en las que habitan los pájaros *tayos*.  

# Los Tayos
El pájaro tayo es una especie de ave nocturna (*Steatornis caripensis*) que anida en colonias dentro de cuevas.

Su nombre proviene de sus hábitos alimenticios: se alimenta de los frutos de la palma aceitera, lo que significa que el rayo es la ÚNICA ave voladora nocturna que es... vegana! Otra cosa asombrosa sobre esta especie es que navegan por ecolocalización, al igual que los murciélagos. Los tayos se encuentran en las zonas del norte de Sudamérica. 

>Spoiler: vimos un tayo, pero solamente por un par de nanosegundos! Lamentablemente no tuve el tiempo de sacarle una foto...

# Cómo llegar
Nuestra ubicación es Pastaza, Ecuador.
Siguiendo la carretera de Puyo a Macas, en el km 63 hay una señal para el pueblo de Chuwitayo. Desde allí, entrando en la carretera a Chapintza, se encuentra un camino de tierra que es el inicio del sendero. Tardamos unos 30 minutos en llegar a nuestra primera parada que fue el proyecto comunitario "*Yamaram Jintis Tayu Jee*" (quiero escribir sobre esta experiencia en mi siguiente publicación). Desde allí, hicimos una caminata de una hora y media hasta la entrada de la cueva.

# Entrando en la cueva
En cuanto llegamos a nuestro destino, hicimos una pausa y nuestro guía aprovechó para darnos algo de información sobre la cueva que nos había llevado allí. La cueva a la que íbamos a entrar es una cueva fluvial que, en algún momento de su historia geológica, sufrió el derrumbe de su techo. Este derrumbe dio lugar a un estrecho desfiladero que continúa bajo tierra. La cueva es grande y amplia, con numerosos caminos que llevan a diferentes direcciones. Son en total 7 kilómetros subterráneos! Nosotros íbamos a recorrer el sendero principal, de algo menos de 1 km.

Nuestro guía nos aconsejó que lleváramos las menos cosas posibles, ya que íbamos a meternos en el agua. No podía dejar mi cámara y el me aseguró que no pasaría nada si tuviera bastante cuidado. Esto y una linterna frontal eran las únicas cosas que llevé conmigo.

Ya nos estamos metiendo!
Bastante pronto, tuvimos que arrodillarnos y arrastrarnos por un pasillo estrecho. El suelo estaba embarrado y pegajoso. Por lo tanto, nos mojamos y nos ensuciamos, pero, por supuesto, valía la pena. En cuanto cruzamos ese tramo estrecho, nos encontramos con una parte amplia de la cueva:

Pronto llegamos a la parte del agua. Nuestro guía ya nos había preparado que íbamos a tener que nadar en agua fría por un par de metros. Así que nos tomamos una última foto antes de empaparnos:

Tras nuestro épico baño que afortunadamente no dejó ninguna víctima, llegamos a una parte de la cueva que de repente se ponía muy estrecha.

Nuestro guía nos dijo que teníamos que embutirnos en ese estrecho pasillo. No sólo era extremadamente estrecho, sino que además teníamos que estar haciendo equilibrio sobre las rocas que estaban a nuestros lados, ya que no había suelo firme bajo nuestros pies.

Conseguimos caminar con éxito por el túnel. No habían miembros rotos, sólo adrenalina y motivación para seguir explorando!

# Un poco de zoología 
Durante nuestro paseo por las entrañas de la tierra, nuestro guía nos estuvo mostrando las arañas que se encuentran en este hábitat subterráneo.

Los insectos que viven en las cuevas se consideran organismos sorprendentes que están muy adaptados a las condiciones extremas del subsuelo. Además, investigar de cerca a estas criaturas puede arrojar luz sobre interesantes procesos evolutivos, ya que han evolucionado exclusivamente en un hábitat aislado de características únicas. Para decirlo con palabras más sencillas, una araña de esta cueva será completamente diferente no sólo de una araña de una cueva en Filipinas, sino también de una araña de una cueva cercana, incluso de la misma región de la selva. Todas son únicas en su propio hábitat subterráneo.

# La vuelta

Por aquí se acaba nuestro recorrido. Hay mucho más para explorar en esta cueva y la voz aventurera dentro de mí decía: "*María, deberías de volver, andar por más caminos de la cueva, explorar más!*". Deseo satisfacer esta solicitud algún día!
