*My son will live; he will live to declare the goodness of God in the land of the living. Don't say that, Doctor; my son has to live."* My mother said, with her hands holding her half-loosened wrapper as she kept walking up and down the hospital ward.

*“As you can see, we've tried and we are still trying our best. The chances of him surviving are slim. I'm sorry, ma.”* The doctor said, as he walked away to attend to another patient.



*“Sorry? Sorry for what?”* my father shouted after him. *“My son is not dead, and he will not die. I won't bury my son; evil will not befall my family!”*



I was just there lying down, and trust me, I felt like talking as I lay down there. I wanted to say something to at least give them hope, but my lips wouldn't part ways. Not only that, but I lay there listening to the beeping sound of the monitor right beside my bed.




*“Daddy, what's wrong with my brother? Is he going to the same place Grandma went in heaven?”* My younger sister asked in her thin, soft voice.





*“No, don’t say that!”* My mother replied to her almost immediately, as if she had been expecting her to talk. *“Your brother is going nowhere, not while I'm still alive."*




Then came the nurse to adjust the drip. *“You can fight this, dear; your parents are trying, the doctors are doing their best, and we are still here too. Don't leave us; keep holding on, huh?





I was tired too; holding on felt like the hardest thing, if not impossible to do. Even I know I'm tired. I'm tired of the drugs, the injections, and the various tests and scans. I was tired of the various surgeries. It seems as if my body is no longer mine. Breathing was hard; I was a shadow of myself already, and nothing felt important to me anymore. I wanted everything to just finish, but then, what state will these people be in? They've spent their whole lives making sure I'm fine. At times, I can say I don't even feel pain or feel anything again. If they inject me or draw blood or anything, I just lie there looking as if nothing has been done to this body of mine.

*“Mummy, I'm sure God can hear us; we won't stop praying.”* I heard my brother told my mom it was as if he read my mind, as that was exactly what I was muffling inside of me... Mummy, please pray, don't leave me...*





*“Lord, I've always served you; please don't take him away from me, at least for the fact that he's called with your name...* I heard my say with a trembling voice.







And immediately, something stirred inside of me. I don't know what it was, but this wasn't strength; even I know I have no strength inside of me again. It was something bigger and more powerful; it was as if I was standing on an edge and a force outside of me pulled me back.






Immediately, my finger moved, and the beeping sound changed.




*“He just moved his fingers,”* my mother shouted.



The nurse rushed in together with the doctor. 






I said a prayer too, then I felt something drop on my hands. I knew it was her tears; it felt warm. 




My mother, together with my dad, stopped the doctor on his way back. I can't really figure out what they said, but I heard the doctor say, “Huhm, at this point, only if a miracle can…”





*“A miracle?"* I heard my dad say it as if he was disappointed. *“Please, do your best, doctor. God will do His part too.”*





Not long after, everywhere became silent.




I drifted away; more like I slept, but I didn't. Everything seems blurred; I heard various unclear voices. I saw myself as a child, running about barefoot. It went further again; I saw myself as a teen laughing together with friends, and then again, I saw myself in the lecture hall arguing about how the one-year service year would go while discussing future plans. Everything began to flood in as if it was reality.






Is this the end for me, is this the end of all of my dreams and aspirations?     




*“Time is not on our side.”* I heard a voice say, as if from afar.



*“His time will not run out; my God will pause time for him."* I heard my mother say with assurance in her voice.




“Mummy, what is happening?”* I heard my sister cry as she shook my legs.





*"Where's the doctor..."* I heard my dad's voice echoing in the whole ward.

My mother bent close to me; she held my hand and whispered in my ear. *"You are destined for more, and you are stronger than you think, my son, so fight. Your life is written in the stars. You can't leave us now."*







The doctor stood at first wondering; he looked straight into the monitor as if checking for something. *"We were just finalizing his...this can't be possible. His vitals have improved."*




Slowly, I made my way back. I began opening my eyes slowly, but then, everything was blurry. Slowly, slowly it became clearer and clearer. I saw my dad for the first time in weeks, I saw my little sister holding on to the teddy bear I bought her for her sixth birthday party, and I saw my mom trembling as she was saying words of prayers in a rush with her hands pressed to her chest.




*“Mum…”* I said with all the energy I could gather.







I guessed she was so lost in prayer since, but then immediately she heard my faint, soft voice, she opened her eyes and screamed my name...*"Jesuferanmi, Jesuferanmi, thank you, Jesus!”*




The doctor stood up again and stared at the monitor for about thirty seconds, whispering to himself. He bent down again, this time removing his stethoscope and putting it on my chest. He stood up again, shaking his head as he muttered in disbelief...*"Everything looks fine and normal, his heart, blood pressure, and all. How come? He was almost gone the other time I came, I just didn't know how to tell you.”*








*“Long last, you cheated death."* I heard the nurse said.




I couldn't even pull myself up; I was so weak and exhausted, but then... I'm alive. Against all odds.   




After some weeks, I was already doing well and didn't need a machine to keep me alive. One of those evenings, I was in a sitting position on my bed as I rested my back against my pillow; my sister climbed up my bed, sat next to me, and looked into my eyes with that innocent look of hers.




*“Brother, wasn't it heaven where Grandma went...why did you come back?”* She said it as if....





But then, I just smiled and responded to her. *“Huhm, kid sis, it is because it was written in the stars that my story isn’t finished, not yet.”*





Well, maybe she understood, maybe she didn't, but then her face lit up and she moved closer to give me a very tight hug.

Now, when I remember those painful moments, those nights and days of pain, I know that surviving isn't about chance or luck. It was destiny. Some lives and destinies are too bound and connected to others to be cut short. There are some people's journeys that cannot be erased, no matter how hopeless the situation is.




And I can boldly say... Mine was one of them.




That particular night, in that hopeless situation, in the crowded hospital room filled with tears, prayers, fears, and all, the stars themselves refused to let me go...
