The Bulgarian mountains are a true natural wonder, renowned for their breathtaking beauty and diverse landscapes. With towering peaks, lush forests, and crystal clear rivers, these mountains offer a stunning backdrop for outdoor adventures and a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. From the majestic Rila and Pirin ranges to the rolling hills of the Rhodopes, there is something for everyone in Bulgaria's mountains, making them a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.   During our last visit in the Rhodope mountains we were able to visit quite an unusual and somehow magical place. It was about half an hour drive from the hotel we stayed at and it was definitely one of the top picks in the region. The place is called Grasishte Historic Landscape park and it’s a human made path between the trees. On the 2,5 hour walk you can see a lot of interesting stones, made by Mother Nature which resemble different objects and animals.    The beginning of the walk is relatively easy and is almost completely flat, so if you are with kids you can still have a short half an hour walk to the first observation place. There , at a specific angle, you can see a human face formed by a group of rocks. It’s amazing how easily you can see it! The place has some benches and places to enjoy a short eating break.   *This is the head.*   *And here’s a dog’s head.*      The next part of the walk becomes even more difficult, but even with higher shoes my wife was able to take the steeper drops with some help from me. On the hardest parts of the route there are wooden steps and stair-shaped ground that helps you with the task of walking down towards the river. This part is definitely not suitable for children, and if you want to climb the steeps, it’s not gonna be impossible. It’s doable, but you have to be a bit more experienced.    As you descend you enter a beautiful forest, which deliver a natural shelter from the winds. When we were on the top, there were some pretty high almost hurricane winds, but as we entered between the trees, it calmed down and we were rewarded with a perfect weather for a winter walk. Luckily, there was no snow either. It felt more like an autumn weather.    When you reach the river, the walk becomes very peaceful and calm. It’s a very gradual upwards walk and you pass several relaxation points with tables and benches where you can sit and enjoy the relaxation sounds of the river. There is also an old Roman bridge that leads you across the river bed. It’s unique, because it’s constructed only with the use of stones which are arranged without any joining material. These bridges stand disrupted for many centuries and will probably outlive many modern bridges. A couple hundred meters before the bridge there is another stone that can be seen as a turtle head. It was strange when we saw it, but it is really similarly looking.    The last part of the walk becomes a bit steeper, but still not hard to take. It’s completely possible to take the whole route for about two hours without rushing. Even with my wife being 6 months pregnant was able to take this task easily. I know that many pregnant women will not take any risk, but she is a little bit of mad head. I love her!   There are some places where river has formed little waterfalls, some of which are difficult to reach, while others are right next to the forest pathway. I think if you have more time you can enjoy a lot more beautiful places around the main route.     The place has a symbolic entrance tax of about 1 Bulgarian lev, which equals about $0,5. This is mainly for maintaining needs and maybe some electrical bills. The man who takes care of everything was a very pleasant old guy and I don’t think he gets any profit at all. He does this only for his own pleasure. He truly loves the nature.    Generally this place is a real gem in the mountains, and if you want to spend a couple of hours in our beautiful nature, you must visit it. As I already said, you don’t have to be an experienced mountaineer to take the route easily and even if you are with your children, you can still take the easy part at the beginning. I really can’t wait to visit some places like this one. Maybe will have to wait though, because our baby is already to be delivered in about a month.
