First of all, I recently learned that Fascinating Insects will be joining the @dna.org team which is absolutely fabulous. A great fit and a wonderful initiative. I delegate to the community Hive account to help boost upvotes of participants and will continue to provide further delegations as my Hive continues to grow. I'd recommend also, if you can spare any Hive to also delegate to the awesome handle.

Last night while in the home gym we were blessed by a visit from a butchy boy which is actually named Woodlouse. Just in Australia we nick named them butchy boys. This name is mainly unique to Melbourne so you can always tell where someone is from by what they call this bug. Keep that in mind if you're ever with an international, present them one of these and see what they call it. Each country has a different name.

Butchy Boys are probably the most fascinating insects as they are actually crustaceans and believed to be one of the first living creatures that left the sea. They are an isopod and their relative still resides in the sea.

They are believed to have inhabited land during the Carboniferous period and many reverted back to residing in semi wet conditions. Beneficial to gardens providing nutrients for plants and warding off other insects they can be considered a pest if you're growing strawberries as this bugs absolutely love ripening strawberries. So keep an eye out.

This species of Woodlouse in self defence can roll into a complete sphere using its exoskeleton as a shield protecting it from predators. Not all species have this ability.

Woodlouse are considered crustaceans in the same family as lobster, however I wouldn't go chomping down on this critters as reports on consuming the crustaceans centre around a strong taste of urine. Not so pleasant.

For little miss 3 it was her first time meeting a butchy boy and at first was scared as she perceived it as a threat but after a few moments befriended the crustacean. Waking today in upset as she stored it in a container before heading off to bed. I released it back into the garden to do it's thing. I didn't tell her that though.

I hope you enjoyed my post, what is your name for a butchy boy? I'd be interested in seeing how many different names we can get for them.
