# This is my sketch of a C Chord.
The Latin root for ***"chord"*** is simply ***"heart"***. It is also the root for accord and discord. The sketch is just an introduction to a story of love and discord.
# His Last Chord
In music, a chord is a series of notes in harmony, usually the same key. They are different notes but when played together there is a pleasant sound of unison. This is how Stevie sounded together with Eric Clayton and his band in 1990. Everything was in harmony. They were in one accord.
Here they are in the classic ***"Sweet Home Chicago."*** I listened to this song played by so many artists each summer at the Chicago Blues festival but nothing quite like Stevie Ray Vaughn. His guitar speaks like [BB King's Lucille. ](https://youtu.be/-Y8QxOjuYHg)

I was still in high school and I really wanted to go to Alpine Valley to see Eric Clapton and his band end the summer on a Sunday night concert.
I had been to Alpine Valley once already that summer for a concert. It was too far from Chicago and the next day I had to be at football practice at 6am. Instead I stayed home and fell asleep listening to radio. The next day when I came home from school my dad was watching the news and said,
> That's the last Stevie Ray concert.
I nodded. Stevie Ray Vaughn's last words to his drummer are a chord of love, "Love ya." It was not the right weather to take off in a helicopter at midnight.
# His Discord
Just a few years before that Stevie Ray Vaugh was not in one accord. His band was struggling to get a record contract.
David Bowie asked Stevie Ray Vaughn to join his band to go on tour. The problem is that David Bowie's band leader (Carlos Alomar) played lead guitar and Stevie Ray played lead guitar. That should be fine as long as there is a chord of love, but there was no chord of love. Instead there was jealousy, fear and tension.
Other things plied up and the tension grew. When Stevie Ray invited his wife Lenora to rehearsals she was banned after Alomar complained to Bowie about her. And then to make it up to him and show him he was a cool guy, Bowie offered the opening spot of the tour to Stevie Ray Vaughan. That never happened.
Instead there was more discord with Stevie Ray's manager Chelsey Millikin and David Bowie. Millikin asked for more opportunities for Stevie Ray and Bowie asked for Stevie Ray to fire Milliken. Finally Stevie Ray walked out of David Bowie's tour. The reason was David Bowie was never going to share the stage with him.
There is discord whenever two different people try to do something together. [Stevie Ray's Bass player](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/41150376-texas-flood) said,
> "Stevie was supposed to walk down a ramp, and they wanted him to do these choreographed moves, but he’d walk exactly the same normal way every time. They could never get him to do what they wanted, because Stevie was incapable of pretending to be something he wasn’t.”

# Discord can open new channels
You can't have discord without a chord. Both of these men were men of heart and books are written about them. We can meet some of their band members and ask them, but we will never be able to hear their chords ring together again.
Stevie Ray Vaughn knew what to do when the discord couldn't be resolved. He moved on. Maybe everyone still remembers rocket man and the artist behind that voice, but not everyone remembers Stevie Ray and the little discord that they had so many years ago.
Today we know for sure what people say in discord on the blockchain are recorded and even on the Discord app. In one made a promise on Discord another could hold that promise as evidence. There is nothing wrong with a little discord. Some of discord can be resolved on Discord and what can't be resolved can be set aside for later. I'm excited that we have freedom to express ourselves even in discordance.
# Discord can produce new colors
Sometimes things need to be mixed up and shaken and stirred to get the right taste. Other times it s best for them to be tasted separately. Discord will always be around as long as we have differences. Today there are avenues to discuss differences and work on practical solutions. In the case of Vaughn and Bowie, their avenues of artistic expression did not match.
They didn't become the perfect misfits or even Bert and Ernie. The best solution for their discord was for each to go their separate way. Through the discord each of them continued to grow in their own way without holding a grudge.

Thanks @abdul-qudus, Yes, he did it for the people for for the music itself. Sometimes there is something inside a person that drives him or her to create and display. This was his inside him. Then at the age of 35 years old he left us. Guitar players know him well, but for the rest of the music world he was the guy in the background. There is a little discord in everyone's life. It's how we handle it that determines what happens next. He let it go and then he started to play with Eric Clapton. That was a lot better gig. Finally he was called upstairs. Life is beautiful when you are at peace with yourself.

Stevie Ray Vaughn what a freaking legend! He was one of the absolute greats and yet I think he was largely overlooked. There are a good few of them from that era - Johnny Winter was another one. This is a beautiful post. Did you know that Stevie Ray Vaughan was my favorite blues guitarist when I was a teenager? I always wished I could play guitar like SRV. Later, Jimi Hendrix became a close second, and finally I held them both in equal regard as absolute monsters and innovators of the expression of the guitar as a blues instrument in the modern era. Though I was born in 1990, many of my peers in high school and college greatly admired the miniature renaissance of music, art, and folk culture that occurred in the US during the 1960s and 1970s — romanticizing those decades, while being youthfully naive to the dark side of those days. I never knew about the connection with David Bowie. Of course I am familiar with Stevie's substance addiction issues and later commitment to sobriety, followed by his tragic and untimely death in a helicopter crash. Some can play guitar like Stevie Ray Vaughn or even Hendrix but no one can play the same. It's something we might be able to do technically but with no jive. They are natural masters. B.B. King wanted to sing spirituals but after coming back from the war Lucille drove him to play the Blues. I don't think any of those three had any technical theoretical musical training. We just didn't know what we were. Life hurts... but then you know you are alive. In the case of Stevie Ray Vaughn it was his wife's link to drug problems that got the David Bowie band manager so frustrated. Finally he told Bowie he didn't want her around and Bowie banned her from practice. I was still in elementary school back then but I do remember a club down the block from our house. It was called Fitzgerald's. On the weekends if I walked by I could hear the blues and sometimes it was like I was moved to another world. Those must have been the greats. You are a very special writer @moon-city, I guess I was impressed when you shared in the Pob Art Contest from @aiuna. I love to hear from people that have some insight. It is not natural for any two people to work perfectly well together but when they learn to do so they are like a locomotive and unstoppable. Consider how Stevie Ray Vaughn worked with Clapton. Everything was different but Clapton was cool and let Stevie be himself. That humbleness worked for both of them. Clapton learned the soul of Texas blues and Stevie learned Clapton's genius. I work with other teachers in class. The class really works when I bring out their best not when I do my best. The same thing goes for at home. I don't want to get into details, but when we learn to humble ourselves and respect each other even the kids are very happy. I don't have a lot of free time but when I do I like to check out what my friends on POB are writing and I smile to learn something cool. And of course I !LUV !PIZZA and I'm trying to collect some other engagement tokens.

I do think there is a whole pressure for groups to always get along 24/7 but conflicts don't necessarily need to have a bad rep. Sometimes, it can be a means to understand each other's needs. I really like how you mentioned that a class works when you bring out the best of other teachers. Often times, I am more concerned about how I am doing and forget that teamwork needs to exist. Your time constraints are totally understandable. Don't feel pressured to do everything. Take time for yourself.
