I hope you are all doing well. I am fine, thank God. As promised, this weekend's post will be about phobias. Yes, as you may have seen in my last post, and for those who haven't, I left the [link](https://peakd.com/hive-131951/@mpsyco-oqm/even-psychologists-have-phobias-heres-mine-enes--ek3) here.

In that post, as part of the @holos-lotus community initiative, we shared our personal experiences with phobias and how, even as psychologists, we health professionals are not exempt from them. Now, I really liked that not only were there people who recognized those intense fears they might have and that might be disturbing them at the moment, but also that their discomfort found relief in knowing that they are not the only ones. 

On this occasion, I want to contribute a little knowledge, but this time from the perspective of psychology itself. What are phobias? Do I really have a phobia, and how do I know when to ask for help? What are the symptoms and signs? And, of course, what is the difference between fear and phobia? Although it may sound redundant, they are not the same thing, so please read on.

First, let's start with the basics that give rise to phobias: fear. Fear is a basic emotion whose function is survival. Yes, emotions are designed to react to our survival as a species, at least the basic ones. Fear arises in response to a reaction or stimulus that represents a danger to us. Now, this fear can be divided into two types: rational fear, or what is socially reasonable to fear, and irrational fear, which, due to more subjective circumstances, only causes terror in an individual. 

Well, we haven't gotten to phobias yet. Phobias arise when this fear, whether reasonable or not, emerges in an intense way, accompanied by more emotions that intensify the person's reaction to danger, triggering a series of avoidance behaviors such as running away, escaping, screaming, running, and physiological reactions in the body such as sweating, palpitations, stomach pain, dizziness, tremors, etc., better known as a panic attack. All of this is directed at something. 

Now, unlike common fear, fright, or night terrors, which can also trigger everything I just mentioned, a phobia must prevail constantly in response to that stimulus or thing, and be frequent for a long time, with these symptoms. According to the DSM-V, a phobia is classified as an anxiety disorder, in fact as a phobic anxiety disorder, among others.

Okay, so if I meet all these criteria, does that mean I'm sick? Well, no. In fact, apart from the need for evaluation, rather than just looking at diagnostic manuals, phobias and anxiety disorders (like others) are very complex, and to say that we are sick simply because we meet a particular criterion is a very simplistic conclusion. If that were the case, we would all have every illness.

The most I could say as a professional without any prior evaluation is that if I or you have a phobia, and it falls within the category of anxiety disorders, it means that, first of all, it is called a disorder because it refers to an imbalance that significantly interferes with one or more parts of your life or biopsychosocial aspect, not necessarily that there is a physiological illness, much less. And it is anxiety because that phobia triggers a cluster of emotions, sensations, and feelings linked to fear, danger, and threat (anxiety) that lead to the symptoms of a panic attack, which is a consequence of the anxiety itself but is triggered by something else.

Now, at this point, we know how to differentiate between fear and phobia, but how do we really know if we have a phobia? Well, according to the manuals, there are general guidelines for identifying them, but in my professional opinion, this is not enough, because a lot of context is needed, apart from the fact that it depends on the person, culture, region, and socio-emotional situation. However, I will leave you with some general guidelines, such as:

If what you are afraid of is persistent and causes extreme fear, do you avoid that stimulus or situation? Fear is disproportionate, meaning that in some way, compared to other things, it is outside the range of tolerance and causes physical symptoms. 

Now, another important question: when should you seek consultation or a mental health professional? This is when it interferes with your daily life. However, it would be necessary to identify which phobia or which stimulus or situation is affecting the person, because while not all things should affect people's daily lives, there are others that do, such as agoraphobia, and if it leads to social isolation. 

Any situation that is disturbing your mental health should be treated by the appropriate professional, whether a psychologist or a psychiatrist, not because you believe you are sick or maladjusted, but because it is the competence of those of us who know this complex world and have studied it. On the other hand, we are here to listen to you, not to judge you. Although it is true that phobias can be cured, sometimes the cure is not to eliminate or change a human being, because that is what they are, human beings, and when attending a psychological consultation, the professional must analyze all aspects of the problem, including the patient's environment.

Espero se encuentren muy bien, yo bien, gracias a Dios, como lo prometido es deuda, en este fin de semana, el post de hoy se tratará de las fobias, si, como lo habrán visto en mi último post, y para los que no, les dejé el [enlace](https://peakd.com/hive-131951/@mpsyco-oqm/even-psychologists-have-phobias-heres-mine-enes--ek3) aquí.

En ese post, en la iniciativa de la comunidad de @holos-lotus, participamos en compartir desde una experiencia personal nuestras fobias, y cómo, incluso siendo un psicólogo, nosotros los profesionales de la salud no estamos exentos de esto. Ahora bien, me gustó mucho que no solo hubo gente que reconoció aquellos miedos intensos que pudiesen tener y perturbar hasta el momento, sino de que su malestar encuentra un alivio al saber que no son los únicos. 

En esta oportunidad, quiero aportar un poco de conocimiento, pero está vez desde la psicología como tal ¿Que son las fobias? ¿Realmente se si tengo una fobia y cómo saber cuándo pedir ayuda? ¿Síntomas y signos? Y por supuesto la diferencia entre, el miedo y la fobia, aunque suene redundante, no lo son, así que acompañenme a leerme.

Primero comencemos con lo básico que da origen a las fobias, el miedo, el miedo es una emoción básica, que su función es la supervivencia, si, las emociones están hechas para reaccionar a nuestra supervivencia como especie, al menos las básicas. El miedo surge a una reacción o estímulo que represente un peligro para nosotros, ahora bien, este miedo puede dividirse en dos tipos, un miedo racional o lo que socialmente razonable a algo que de miedo, y un miedo irracional, aquello que por circunstancias más subjetivas este miedo solo causa terror en un individuo. 

Bien, aquí no hemos llegado a la fobias, las fobias surge cuando esté miedo principalmente, ya sea razonable o no, emerge de una manera intensa, acompañado de más emociones que intensifiquen la reacción de peligro para la persona, que desencadenan una serie de conductas evitativas como huir, escapar, gritar, correr y reacciones fisiológicas en el cuerpo como sudoración, palpitaciones, dolor en el estómago,mareos, temblores etc más conocidos como ataque de pánico. En qué todo esto está dirigido a algo. 

Ahora bien, a diferencia del miedo común, o susto, o terror nocturno, que también puede desencadenar todo esto que acabo de mencionar, la fobia debe prevalecer en una constante a ese estímulo o cosa, y ser frecuente por bastante tiempo, con estos síntomas. De acuerdo con el DSM-V la fobia está catalogado como un trastorno de ansiedad, de hecho como trastorno de ansiedad fóbico entre otros.

Okey, entonces, si cumplo con todo esto, estoy enfermo entonces ? Emm no, de hecho, aparte que se necesita evaluación, más que mirar los manuales de diagnóstico, las fobias y los trastornos de ansiedad (como los demás) son muy complejos y decir que estamos enfermos sencillamente porque coincidimos en una particularidad de los criterios, es una aceptación muy simple, si fuese así, tuviésemos todas las enfermedades.

A lo mucho que yo podría afirmar como profesional sin ningún tipo de evaluación previa, es que si tengo o tienes una fobia, y está dentro de los trastornos de ansiedad, quiere decir que primero, se le dice trastorno porque se refiere a un desajuste que interfiere significativamente en una o varias partes de tu vida o aspecto biopsicosocial, no necesariamente de que haya una enfermedad fisiológica o mucho menos. Y es de ansiedad porque precisamente esa fobia emerge un cúmulo de emociones, sensaciones, sentimientos ligadas al miedo, peligro y amenaza (ansiedad) que nos lleva a los síntomas de un ataque de pánico que es una consecuencia de la misma ansiedad, pero que es estimulada por algo.

Ahora bien, llegado a este punto, sabemos diferenciar entre el miedo y la fobia, pero como realmente sabemos si tenemos una fobia, bueno, de acuerdo los manuales hay generalidades para poder identificarlas, pero en mi opinión profesional no es suficiente, porque se necesita mucho contexto aparte de que esto depende de la persona, cultura, región y situación socioemocional. Sin embargo les dejaré algunas indicaciones generales como:

Si aquello que se le tiene miedo, es persistente y genera mucho miedo de manera extrema, ¿evitas aquel estímulo o la situación en sí ? El miedo es desproporcionado, quiere decir que de alguna manera a comparación con otras cosas, este está fuera de rango de tolerancia, te genera síntomas físicos. 

Y ahora bien, otra cosa importante ¿Cuando acudir a consulta o a un profesional de la salud mental? Esto es cuando ya interfiera en tu vida cotidiana, sin embargo habría que identificar qué fobia o a qué estímulo o situación está afectada la persona, porque si bien, no todas las cosas deberían afectar la vida cotidiana a las personas hay otras que sí, como la agorafobia y si está te lleva al aislamiento social. 

Toda situación que esté en una perturbación de tu salud mental, debe ser tratados por el debido profesional que le corresponde, sea psicólogo o sea psiquiatra, no por creer estar enfermo o desajustado, sino que es una competencia de los que sabemos este mundo tan complejo y a la vez lo hemos estudiado, por otro lado, estamos para escucharte no para juzgar. Aunque si bien es cierto que las fobias tienen cura, a veces la cura no se haya en eliminar o cambiar a un ser humano, porque bien es lo que es, un ser humano, y cuando se asiste a consulta psicológica, el profesional debe analizar todos los aspectos del problema incluído el entorno del paciente.
