SYNOPSIS
A funeral director crosses paths with a young girl, which changes his life for the better.

REVIEW
Shortest synopsis I have read in ages. This reminded me of one thing that Pak Hassan Muthalib said in almost all his film talks, "Tell a simple story, yet in a great way." It is a trade that is quickly fading.

Mo Sanmei (played brilliantly by Yilong Zhu), the protagonist is one of those 'everyman' types of hero characters who take a constant beating from the beginning of the movie up to the end. Yet he stood his ground and moved on. As the saying, "Not all hero wear capes." We all have that in our lives. Our fathers, mothers, uncles, or those who we once take as superheroes. 

It also shows how a film and an archetype do not have to preach. In this case, he connects to something deep inside of us who went through similar things too. That is what an 'everyman' type of hero does.

(The 'everyman' character archetype often acts as the stand-in for the audience. This character archetype is just a normal person, but for some reason, he or she must face extraordinary circumstances. The everyman can be the protagonist or a supporting figure.)

The presence of the little girl, Wu Xiaowen (played brilliantly by Enyou Yang) eventually leads Mo Sanmei to the realization that it has all been fixed in the skies. It is cleverly hinted at by the 'Monkey King' persona that she takes up. Even though she, (like the 'Monkey King') shakes things around, the chaos for mortals is an order for the heavens, thus fate.

The dead grandmother at the beginning of the show lit the night skies at the end. Like a saying from a wise man I recall, that the stars are made up of those that we have lost. The recorded voice of the grandmother is a subtle hint of media as one of the ways of achieving immortality. 

Earlier, I mentioned telling a simple story in a great way. This film ends up saying about godliness in all of our life happenings. Like Joseph Campbell said, 

"Just as the people who you met by chance became effective agents in the structuring of your life, so you have been the agent in the structuring of other lives. And the whole thing gears together like one big symphony, everything influencing and structuring everything else."

And as Mo Sanmei handles death on a daily basis since he was young, it has somehow taught him about how precious life is.
