La pulpa dental es la responsable de darle vitalidad a nuestros dientes gracias a ella, podemos sentir los diferentes cambios térmicos al frío y calor, por lo tanto debemos evitar que esta deba enfermarse con la enfermedad de caries dental, la pulpa es muy sensible por lo que nos permite sentir dolor y este es enviado al sistema nervioso central, también tiene como función nutrir células importantes como los odontoblastos, la pulpa se encuentra llena de téjido vasculonervioso, por lo que debemos generalmente mantener adecuada higiene oral, para evitar que esta se enferme y terminemos removiendo la misma por completo u eliminandola.

La pulpa se encuentra ubicada justamente dentro de la cámara pulpar, tiene como principal característica en ser el único téjido blando que se encuentra dentro de los dientes, esta de encuentra formada de téjido conectivo laxo, que se encuentra vascularizado, por lo que contiene arterias, venas, vasos linfáticos y nervios, estos llegaran a la pulpa por medio del agujero apical, cabe destacar que en su interior contiene distintas zonas morfologicas que pueden tener bastante células, así  como también puede encontrase en pequeñas cantidades o escasas.

Una de las células de poco predominio de la pulpa dental son los odontoblastos, estas celula posee distinta prolongaciones o tubulos dentinarios que se localiza en la periferia de la pulpa, esta celula contienen colageno tipo I y tipo II, también contiene fibroblastos que son las células de mayor predominio y abundantes de la pulpa, especialmente en la corona del diente estas fibras son colagenas, también elásticas los fibroblastos generan fibrina que es extracelular, esta tienen adhesión a la célula, cabe destacar que también tienen sustancias fundamentales amorfa que estas son un medio interno que reciben celulas que se nutren de arterias o celulas únicamente sanguíneas, esta sustancia fundamental es un gel, formado de proteínas, polisacaridos, agua, carbohidratos.

Las funciones de la pulpa son varias pero iniciaremos explicando, como la nutrición que se da por medio de las prolongaciones odontoblasticas aportando así diferentes nutrientes, para conservar la dentina y también  mantener la integridad de la pulpa, sensitiva es responsable de responder a diversos estimulos ante una respuesta agresiva como injurias y dolor, otra función es la defensora ya que la pulpa tiene la capacidad de reconocer sustancias que sean extrañas que puedan enfermar como los microorganismos y bacterias por ultimo es la función de reparación, ya que la dentina forma dentina peritubular, esta se va estrechando en los conductos para evitar el paso de bacterias, la dentina terciaria permite elaborar nuevos odontoblastos que es origen de celulas mesenquimatosas.
