Las suturas en la cavidad bucal son de vital importancia cuando se necesita afrontar los tejidos o mucosa permitiendo una mayor cicatrización, es necesario suturar cuando se tiene el alvéolo dentario después de una exodoncia de gran tamaño o cuando se realizan extracciones seriadas, así  como también cuando se realiza una incisión para un estudio histopatológico luego para tomar una muestra de biopsia, normalmente es hilo de sutura es de origen natural y sintético pero este debe ser totalmente estéril debe ser preservado en su empaque abierto únicamente al momento de usarlo para así evitar las infecciones cruzadas, sin embargo debemos tener en cuenta que existen diversos  casos en los que no se sutura ya que la encías por naturaleza lograran su propio proceso de cicatrización.

En este caso fue un paciente de 82 años de edad que se le había realizado la respectiva cirugía de la pieza dentaria pero seguía manifestando ciertas molestias en el alvéolo como si aún tuviera un resto radicular, evidentemente le habían dejado en la clínica donde se trato dicha raíz, costo algunos minutos para extraerla y tuvo que venir la cirujana bucal para ella resolver dicha complicación pero la raíz salió, quedo un alvéolo muy extenso de gran tamaño por lo que se tuvo que suturar recurriendo a la técnica de sutura en puntos simples.

​Se debe afrontar los téjidos sin desgarrar la mucosa, es muy importante tener en cuenta que se debe preservar el coágulo sanguíneo ya que este nos va garantizar una mejor cicatrización de la mucosa, debemos evitar en la medida de lo posible la acumulación de los restos alimenticios ya que se puede producir una infección. Cuando se realiza la técnica de sutura siempre debemos reposicionar el téjido del lugar en donde este debe estar o lo más cercano que se le parezca.

Debemos tener en cuenta que existen diversas suturas, pero debemos usar la que sea más ideal para el procesamiento por lo que debe ser reabsorvibles que esta nos permite unir los bordes de las heridas y están permiten una mayor absorción rápida, existe también la sutura de seda que estas son manejables y de multifilamentos  esta resulta muy ideal después de cirugías como frenectomia o cuando se remueve lesiones en téjido blandos ya que el paciente no va sentir incomodidad como se pueden manifestar cuando se usa el nylon, dicha sutura de nylon garantiza mayor fuerza tensil por lo que se tiene una cicatrización mucho más rápida.

Por último muchos pacientes tienen el mito de que en la cavidad bucal no es necesario suturar, pero en realidad si se debe suturar y las tecnicas de sutura son iguales a las que se realizan en la piel u otras partes del cuerpo, sólo que en la cavidad bucal dependerá del lugar en donde este la herida o el traumatismo en donde se deba afrontar el tejido, normalmente existe mayor cicatrización en la cavidad bucal ya que otras partes del cuerpo se demora un poco más.
