Había escuchado mucho sobre este musical, en clases de teatro, de amigos que lo habían visto e incluso antes de que estuviera en Disney+ había escuchado de su éxito en Broadway. Sin embargo, no pensé que el fenómeno Hamilton fuera capaz de envolverme tanto como lo hizo cuando pude ver este musical.

Es por eso que hoy quiero recomendarles el que ahora se ha convertido en mi musical favorito y contarles el porque es sinceramente una OBRA MAESTRA y en caso de que no lo hayan visto, motivarlos a verlo.

Hamilton no solo es una obra musical increíble, sino que también es excelente a nivel teatral y actoral. Definitivamente muy disfrutable incluso si no eres fan de los musicales y definitivamente le da un aspecto muy divertido a aprender sobre historia.

I had heard a lot about this musical, in theater classes, from friends who had seen it and even before it was on Disney+ I had heard of its success on Broadway. However, I didn't think the Hamilton phenomenon would be able to envelop me as much as it did when I was able to see this musical.

That's why today I want to recommend what has now become my favorite musical and tell you why it is honestly a MASTERPIECE and in case you haven't seen it, encourage you to see it.

Hamilton is not only an amazing musical, but it is also excellent theatrically and acting-wise. Definitely very enjoyable even if you are not a fan of musicals and definitely gives a very fun aspect to learning about history.

Este musical cuenta la biografía de uno de los padres fundadores de Estados Unidos: Alexander Hamilton, quien pasa por el proceso de unirse a la revolución y luchar por la independencia de la nación a la vez que va conociendo a las personas que serían parte importante de su vida, como el general George Washington que sería su mentor, Elizabeth Schuyler quien sería su esposa o Aaron Burr quien sería su enemigo mortal.

Algo interesante es que en el número de apertura aparte de contarnos su niñez, ya nos dicen de quien se enamora, con quienes tendrá amistad e incluso nos dicen quien lo asesina al final de la obra. Aún así durante toda la obra vamos pasando por distintos ámbitos de la vida de Alexander, como su participación en la guerra, su vida familiar, su ascenso en la política y mucho más.

This musical tells the biography of one of the founding fathers of the United States: Alexander Hamilton, who goes through the process of joining the revolution and fighting for the independence of the nation while getting to know the people who would be an important part of his life, such as General George Washington who would be his mentor, Elizabeth Schuyler who would be his wife or Aaron Burr who would be his mortal enemy.

Something interesting is that in the opening number, apart from telling us about his childhood, we are told who he falls in love with, who he will be friends with and even who assassinates him at the end of the play. Yet throughout the play we go through different areas of Alexander's life, such as his participation in the war, his family life, his rise in politics and much more.

But apart from the story, what do I love about Hamilton? I'll tell you.

Hamilton es una rica mezcla musical de géneros tan diversos como el rap y la ópera. Me gusta mucho la manera en la que sale del factor común que hay en musicales de Broadway en la que las canciones suelen ser super clásicas y sublimes. El compositor de esta maravilla de música es Lin Manuel Miranda, leyenda de Broadway quien además interpreta a Alexander Hamilton.

En un análisis que vi, mencionaba que en esta pieza podemos encontrar incluso el uso de los famosos Leitmotiv, recurso muy utilizado en la ópera para transmitirnos una idea o referirnos a un personaje durante toda la obra. En el caso de Hamilton podemos encontrar estos leitmotiv que nos ayudan muchísimo a entender a cada uno de los personajes y sus motivaciones.

Por ejemplo, en el caso de Alexander que es impulsivo, proactivo y esperanzador podemos encontrar las frases: "Just you wait" o "I ain't not throwing away my shot". Caso contrario de Aaron Burr que es más perceptivo y calculador, cuya frase es "Wait for It".

Hamilton is a rich musical blend of genres as diverse as rap and opera. I really like the way it departs from the common factor of Broadway musicals in which the songs are usually super classic and sublime. The composer of this wonderful music is Lin Manuel Miranda, a Broadway legend who also plays Alexander Hamilton.

In a review I saw, I mentioned that in this piece we can even find the use of the famous Leitmotif, a resource widely used in opera to convey an idea or refer to a character throughout the work. In the case of Hamilton we can find these leitmotifs that help us a lot to understand each of the characters and their motivations.

For example, in the case of Alexander who is impulsive, proactive and hopeful we can find the phrases: "Just you wait" or "I ain't throwing away my shot". The opposite case of Aaron Burr who is more perceptive and calculating, whose phrase is "Wait for It".

Las canciones son emotivas, motivadoras e inspiradoras. Son muy pegadizas y te hacen querer cantar con fuerza. 

¿No me creen? Escuchen esta canción que es la tercera de la pieza y mi de mis favoritas del primer acto. Sinceramente te motiva a levantarte y luchar por tus derechos.

Cabe destacar que Lin-Manuel Miranda no solo diseñó Hamilton como un musical, sino como un álbum conceptual por lo que escuchando el álbum puedes seguir la historia a la perfección ya que de hecho esta pieza no cuenta con diálogos, solo música. Este álbum incluso ganó en los premios Grammy como mejor álbum de Rap, independientemente del musical.

It is worth noting that Lin-Manuel Miranda not only designed Hamilton as a musical, but as a concept album so listening to the album you can follow the story perfectly since in fact this piece has no dialogue, only music. En este punto hay demasiadas virtudes que resaltar. La escenografía de Hamilton es bastante sencilla y no cambia a lo largo de la pieza, más bien se apoyan mucho en el uso de las luces, los colores y los bailarines para ir variando y ambientar como cada escena lo requiere.

At this point there are too many virtues to highlight. Hamilton's scenography is quite simple and does not change throughout the piece, but rather relies heavily on the use of lights, colors and dancers to vary and set the mood as each scene requires.

El cuerpo de baile forma una parte muy importante en este musical, pues no solo son el coro y baile, también representan ciertos personajes sin diálogos pero de vital importancia y son los encargados de ir moviendo elementos del escenario como sillas y mesas. Todo esto lo hacen frente a la audiencia mientras se va desarrollando la historia y en ningún momento se ve desorganización en ellos. Miren como lo hacen en uno de mis números favoritos del primer acto: The Battle of Yorktown.</div>

The corps de ballet is a very important part of this musical, because they are not only the chorus and dance, they also represent certain characters without dialogue but of vital importance and are responsible for moving stage elements such as chairs and tables. They do all this in front of the audience while the story unfolds and at no time is there any disorganization in them. Look how they do it in one of my favorite numbers of the first act: The Battle of Yorktown.

Hay cosas que me sorprenden mucho en el montaje, por ejemplo en la canción Satisfied donde la hermana mayor de Eliza, Angelica tiene un flashback de la noche en que conoce a Alexander como ambas escena combinan a la perfección y se complementan. Mírenlo por ustedes mismos, y por cierto esta es mi canción favorita de la pieza.

There are things that surprise me a lot in the montage, for example in the song Satisfied where Eliza's older sister, Angelica has a flashback of the night she meets Alexander as both scenes combine perfectly and complement each other. Debo decir que la actuación de esta pieza es increíble y es que cada actor le dio su toque personal y sazonó su personaje. Incluso fue un reto para ellos puesto que muchos tuvieron que cambiar de personaje para el segundo acto, por ejemplo Jasmine Cephas Jones quien en el primer acto interpreta a Peggy, la dulce e inocente hermana menor de Eliza en el segundo se transforma completamente (hasta su tono de voz) para interpretar a María Reynolds, una mujer muy astuta con la que Alexander tiene una aventura.

I must say that the acting in this piece is incredible and each actor gave their personal touch and seasoned their character. It was even a challenge for them since many had to change their character for the second act, for example Jasmine Cephas Jones who in the first act plays Peggy, the sweet and innocent younger sister of Eliza in the second act is completely transformed (even her tone of voice) to play Maria Reynolds, a very cunning woman with whom Alexander has an affair.

En el elenco original dos actores resultaron ganadores de un premio Tonny, de los cuales tengo que resaltar especialmente a Daveed Diggs, quien interpreta a Marques de Lafayette en el primer acto y a Thomas Jefferson en el segundo acto. No por nada Lafayette resulta ser el personaje favorito de muchos, y es que el actor le agrega mucha carisma y gestualización propia que enriquecen el personaje.

In the original cast, two actors won a Tonny Award, of which I must especially highlight Daveed Diggs, who plays Marques de Lafayette in the first act and Thomas Jefferson in the second act. Y mi premio estrella se lo lleva Philippa Soo, quien interpreta a Eliza en este número después de que se entera de como su esposo hizo público un amorío que tuvo con otra mujer y le dedica estas palabras de "Burn". Se puede ver realmente el dolor en su rostro, la rabia y como se siente traicionada.

And my star award goes to Philippa Soo, who plays Eliza in this number after she finds out how her husband made public an affair he had with another woman and dedicates these words of "Burn" to him. You can really see the pain in her face, the anger and how she feels betrayed.

Si tuviera que sintetizar mi definición sobre Hamilton, la definiría como: "El arte de enseñar algo viejo de manera innovadora". Creo que es un musical al que se le puede sacar mucho en el plano artístico, histórico y en el entretenimiento.

If I had to summarize my definition of Hamilton, I would define it as: "The art of teaching something old in an innovative way". I think it is a musical that you can get a lot out of it artistically, historically and in entertainment.
