Five Months In My Garden, Abridged
Hello beautiful people! It's been quite a while since I published a garden post for you. This is not because my garden had nothing to show off, or that I don't love each and every one of you, but because my life got in the way of blogging. Happily, I am back! I hope to show you, without too many photos, an overview of my garden's high- and low-lights over the past five months.

July 17 had an auspicious beginning. The balloons flew right over my house, all 27 of them that morning. I took this shot specifically for posting in a garden journal entry. Two days later, my life changed dramatically, so I'm just now getting around to showing it to you.

![IMG_20220716_071736040 (1).jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/owasco/23ywip8XDhLdGjz2mNFXp9DyppHcguPnmaMAPRQhK24baqrkWevZXdd84h5sxivqYMwfq.jpg)

<center>Mid-July, early in the morning</center>

Things were looking very good in my tiny garden on this day. The pole beans were poling, the okra was charging up out of the ground, the zucchini, chard, lettuce, carrots, herbs and cucumbers were producing, tomatoes were coming on, and I was getting a small handful of blueberries most days.

<center><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmfKYfHHveMHB2E2tMbPw7yiAiHLQvbkQxLR5YcnPRUeHj/BarnDivider.png"></center>

But I was also starting to find problems with some of the plants. A small black beetle had turned my eggplant foliage to lace, Japanese beetles were eating large holes in my okra and beans, and a mysterious disease (I don't look anything up) was causing all my pepper plants to wither at their tops. I did not get one single pepper out of seven plants, or one single egglant out of four. The tobacco, which looked robust and very promising earlier that month, was suddenly covered in tiny black bugs that turned white over time. I tried spraying with clove oil and water, but it did not stop any of those problems.

You might think I would try to ascertain what these critters and rot were, and up my measures to combat them, but, as I have said, life got in the way. I decided to let it all go.

My worst problem was that my blueberries were being heavily shaded by okra and tomato plants, which I had very unwisely planted on the south side of my blueberries. Live and learn!!!

Below is a shot of the two raised beds south of the blueberries, the tomatoes and okra towering over everything.

I had to remove the silver maple visible in the upper left of the photo because it was dying and dangerous. Earlier in the year, I considered removing that tree, to increase sun in my garden, but decided to let the thing live. When a whole trunk of the tree fell onto the fence a month ago, removing the tree was no longer a hard decision to make. Now there will be so much more sun coming from the west (provided my new neighbors don't decide to plant a tree back there), and a larger full sun area to plant goodies in. I didn't lose very much in privacy either, a bonus.

![IMG_20220812_154830509.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/owasco/Ep3eKvaoAmXdAbrc6akHm1RZqSRCTSbazPYLu2rD5sNpvLwY6UGVTe9dRTEZmvtUHaa.jpg)

<center>Sunny and lush on August 12, 2022</center>

Despite all the unsolved problems and my lack of time to work out there, my tiny garden supplied me with more veggies than I could eat, so that I was able preserve some via canning, dehydrating and fermenting. More learning!

![IMG_20220812_160457067.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/owasco/EpJXhwRxFbDF3prAMtyULdm8LmSrC5YJ2fRXXosR3Gih4hmfcEKjTJaMWsfugmLm2bz.jpg)

<center><img src="https://images.hive.blog/DQmfKYfHHveMHB2E2tMbPw7yiAiHLQvbkQxLR5YcnPRUeHj/BarnDivider.png"></center>

And my garden is *still* producing food, under a contraption constructed of hoops and garden fabric, visible in my final shot. This year it was just an experiment and was only 15 square feet, but I am very happy with the results. I plan to get one of my raised beds under hoops and fabric in fall of 2023 so that I can harvest fresh veggies into 2024 even here in the northeast US. I managed to get lots of mustard greens, daikon, and napa cabbage this year, along with a few rutabagas and carrots. The parsley is still producing usable greens despite snow!!

![IMG_20221129_154320484.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/owasco/EpCANpmERJWVgXipTrt3jqp2HRZziAYxZxvHP6M7u9CUooqzTPhioqzVw97Ns4prrSm.jpg)

One final shot, bringing me up to a total of nine (is there a prize for showing five months in nine photos?), of my tiny garden today, December 1, 2022. Brought to you from New York State, USA.

Very well done girl! That's a lot of hard work but there's nothing more satisfying than eating from your own garden. Like you, I still have loads of food in storage from summer and autumn harvests, plus stuff like kale, celery, parsnips, and spinach still in the ground.

Nifty! Goldenoakfarms says to leave parsnips in the ground until after it freezes, and they will be sweeter. I do love eating out of my garden. There is something very loving about it. I thank all my plants when I harvest, and just feel so full of love as they nourish me. I'd hardly say I have loads of stuff in storage, but I did manage to put up far more than I managed to put up any previous year. I'm really happy with dehydrating stuff.

Hey @owasco,
That's really unfortunate about the pests, I wonder what they were. I've seen them in greenhouses but I just can't seem to remember what they're called, if it's even the same pest. Looks like some kind of mite and a nasty one.

Your vegetative growth was astounding though and it looks like you still produced very well!

I just recently discovered the mustard greens in a micro form and am planning to order some of the full size greens soon. They are so delicious. I have to be careful I don't run out of space haha.

The peppers are very perplexing to me, in terms of why yours or your neighbors did not produce. I've never grown peppers outdoors so I don't want to make any assumptions here. Maybe they needed more water or nutrients, I really don't know, but I am curious to know, were they producing any flowers? Were leaves dropping a lot?

If the answer is no to both of those questions, perhaps they were underwatered and/or nutrient deficient. I kind of doubt nutrient deficiency was the culprit because of how much lush growth the rest of your garden incurred.

With all the recent changes in your life and everything you've been through in such a short time, this garden shows how amazing of a woman you are, because most people couldn't grow a garden like that on their best day.

Can't wait to see what you do next year.
Thanks for sharing with us! :)

Yes, I got a lot of greenery, and not a lot of fruits from my okra and pole beans as well. I think the okra wasn't getting enough sun (north of the pole beans) but the beans mostly turned a mottled brown. I believe I planted those too close together. In addtition, all three beds may have nutrient imbalances. goldenoakfarm provided a great soil test link above. I'll have to dig some soil up next time it thaws enough to dig.

The peppers and eggplant both produced very few flowers, and those few just withered and dropped. The leaves stayed on though. I'm pretty sure the water was OK.

Thanks so much for another of your supportive comments! Nobody does it better.

@hopestylist ·
Hmm, it has indeed been a journey for you and your garden. No matter how well structured a plan can be, there is always a tendency of it being abortive and that is because we are not the ones in control of our lives.

I'm so glad you are back and this post is a beautiful way to start after such a long time. Plants live and die also, so it is no surprise to anyone when they do so, those little pest are still struggling for their own survival and that's why they had to feed on the fresh foods in your garden, hehe.

I totally enjoyed reading through this, thank you so much for sharing this with us. !LUV

I suspect the cow manure I filled my raised beds with was contaminated. My neighbor, who used the cow manure too, had never had so many pests before this year. His peppers failed as well.

It feels good to be back, except for compulsively checking for activity on my posts!

Goodness @owasco , it looks like a jungle compared to the shots I first saw of that space! Amazing. And I totally get why you've been absent - gardening takes some work, and life through you a curve ball again. I bet @goldenoakfarm might have a tip for you bug wise? I've had black spot on my tomotoes and I haven't had that EVER - the extra moist weather this season due to El Nina is throwing up so many problems here. Lovely to see your garden, and no, no prizes for excellent and succinct summaries, just undying #gardenjournal love from us all.

Only one I’ve mentioned before: get a comprehensive soil test and amend to it. Won’t be a quick fix but definitely worth it in the long run.

You really made good use of your garden spot! Yes, we all do the live-and-learn things. I had two such incidents just this year: I put cucumber plants in where the squash didn't come up, and the poor cucumber plants were overwhelmed by the squash plants. Also, I didn't remember the yellow crookneck is a spreading plant, or at least this particular variety was. It nearly engulfed the nearby blueberry bushes. Oops.

It worked really well Toby! I don't have enough room for a greenhouse, but this contraption and cold frames should be enough for my needs in extending my growing season. Surely you get snow where you are. We get a lot of lake (Erie) effect dust, but thankfully not the full brunt of lake effect.

Oh we get snow, but I still don't like it, ROFLOL! I intend to have a hoop house style greenhouse at the homestead. I'm hoping that with cold tolerant plants, I can have fresh vegetables all year round.

But the wallipini should provide year round fresh vegetables for sure!
